I have to wonder if, when a person changes their opinions or their opinion of a celebrity because of their politics if it is because the celebrity is an informed person who therefore should be influential, or if it is a problem of small-mindedness.

The only time I remember being influenced at all was when Gen Clark endorsed Hillary, it didn't make me a supporter but it made me more comfortable in the possibility that she would be the candidate.

But I wouldn't like or dislike an actor or musician based on their political opinions. That's petty and childish. If I would only like people who agreed with everything I did, I'd be darn lonely. Someone who won't watch Sunday night football because they don't like Olbermann's politics, even though he's talking sports, needs to grow up. It's the same for anyone who likes Frasier but refuses to watch because the star is a republican.

Let's say that you're gay (and or a big supporter of equal rights or gay rights if you prefer) and a friend turned you on to old records from Pat Boone.

You fall in love with his music but then one day you find out that he's an enormous, outspoken homophobe.

I don't know how I'd react in this situation but I'd have to think it would taint the music to some extent. It's one thing to be generically Republican and quite another to be a hard-core bigot/racist/homphobe.  ; Or maybe you disagree.

Reggae  music.  Rastafarian are rabid homophobes.

I have to say I wont listen to some reggae music because of the homophobic lyrics.
