is there an age cut-off. For example, if you're over 40 (I just made that up randomly but I can already hear the TYT Old Timers putting down their canes to type an angry response to this sorta young whipper-snapper).

Well, I hate trucker hats, but I don't count caps and wool hats for winter.  I have long hair and even if I braid it, strands end up getting loose and in my face, especially if working outdoors.  I'll wear my company hat or a bandana headband then. But nobody's looking at your hat in this context.
