What the law says is that the money can't be used for personal use but can be used for campaign debts and outstanding payments, donated to charities, given to other campaigns or PACS or, of course, be kept as a war chest for future races.
Of course all of these restrictions only apply to Senators, President and congressmen who entered the House after 1980. Paul entered in 1976. Muddying the waters is that this is a presidential race and Paul left the House and returned since 1980. So are these funds grandfathered in as mad money for the good Dr. or not. It is unclear.
Of course, none of that really means shit since there is no Federal Election Comission to stop people illegaly using campaign funds anyway, right John McCain?
But even if he is bound by these provisions, let's get real. So he pays members of his family and political cronies inflated salaries as campaign workers or contracts business he owns to do campaign work (a la Ross Perot) or sets up dummy charities and PACs or just gets good old-fashioned kickbacks from wherever he spreads his $5 million bucks around.
Ultimately anyone who gave a dime to this charlatan should be outraged that he didn't bother to spend their money doing what they intended (running for president) and instead will, best case scenario, give it to another politician they may or may not support or a charity not of their choosing.
Don't get me wrong I like Ron Paul running for Prez because he is the Nader of the right but clearly a whole lot of people have been taken to the cleaners.
To be fair to Dr. Paul, he has always made it very clear that he supports the right of dishonest people to take financial advantage of idiots free of government interference.
If anyone ever comes across a story about where the hell all that money went, please let me know.
