Rich made a great point sure, but Obama couldn't say it in this context, because he would be calling General Petraeus out for being a yes man.

Is the good general a yesman?...

of coooourse!

But this would have gone over like a lead balloon in that context. It would have come off as a cheap shot. He would be politicizing the military chain of command. Instead his answer asserted executive powers that no one can reasonably argue. One of the things that's great about Obama is he gives concise, direct answers. He doesn't duck questions. So I think its a great point, and one he should make somewhere, but this wasn't the right context.

I know he was playing it safe.

Where the election coverage takes place (Crazyland) if Obama were to point out that Bush has grotesquely politicized the military chain of command he would be eviscerated for politicizing the military chain of command.

America today is like a hockey fight.  Its not the guy who does the initial crime who pays the price, its the guy who tries to respond.
