I know exactly what you mean here hazmat.  It's like when you're a kid playing with a windup toy on a table top.  You wind it up, let it go, and it mindlessly runs off the cliff and damages itself on the floor below. 

It's all very amusing - until you realize that collectively they're dragging the rest of the country off the edge behind them.
