It turns out Cindy McCain's approval rating among whites in the poll was 20%. As I explained in my update above, they didn't include the "unsure" or "don't have enough information" numbers in the story, which is grossly misleading. But I should have known better.

Notice that Michelle's 'not favorable' rating is almost 3 times higher than Cindy's among whites.
