There were so many different photos to choose from, but I chose this one. Why? Because this photo tells a more interesting story than any of the glamour shots of Palin.
The background is not straight out of a tourism brochure. There is no majestic snow covered mountain. There is no dark green forest of southeastern Alaska. The background is Bristol Bay.
That coast freezes hard in the winter and thaws into a soft, spongy ground that supports scrubby vegetation that hides brown bears until you're almost on top of them. The sky is hazy and the sun is never overhead, even in summer. But the summer day is long with the sun slowly tracing a circle low in the sky, dipping barely below the horizon so that sunset turns to sunrise without any darkness between.
She's not standing on the deck of a pleasure boat. That is a working boat. Since women who fish are a dime a dozen in your part of the world, I'm sure you already noticed that detail.
Sarah is not dressed to impress. The hat, bandanna, hoodie with neck cut open and rain gear bibs are work clothes. She's working on a commercial fishing boat.
Working on a commercial fishing boat in Bristol Bay is extremely hard work, but it's honest work. It ain't lawyering in the belly of the corrupt Chicago machine.
