I've never been to Provo; I've just read stories about its uber-conservatism.. I've been to Salt Lake City however, and I could see an African-American or Latino living there - or a White Muslim revert like myself for that matter. You still got a Democratic mayor, right?

My point is that I'm from a small town in Texas myself. (A real-world Arlen no less.) And you have the same "culture of obedience" there, only instead of the LDS variety, its Southern Baptist and whatnot. You also have the Klan making a comeback, and with Obama in the White House and the economy still struggling, it's bound to get worse.

I'm in Austin now where it's mostly safe, but we've had random incidents - an interracial couple got beat up by racist thugs, vandalism of a local mosque, that sort of thing.

Eternal vigilance.
