...but I did get the impression that Mike Huckabee would be about the only reasonable candidate the republicans have for president.  They probably won't go in that direction, we'll probably get Romney...but the reason is that Huckabee is so vanilla unassuming...

...I can't see what dirt they'd be able to get on Huckabee besides his ridiculous views.  But everyone knows the republican candidate is going to have stupid views no matter who they are.

Huckabee is the most unassuming, inoffensive, safest possible pick the republicans could make.  I think he would actually stand a chance.  Palin would be an absolute abomination of a disaster.   Mitt Romney would have a chance, but I just get the feeling it would be less of a chance.

On a personal note, I can't stand Huckabee, he's so...I don't know...he just seems like a weird pedophile.

But they don't constitute enough of a majority to elect a Palin.   There's just no way.   Tina Fey alone would deprive her of 20 million votes.

is a right wing nutjob

One of his first acts as governor was to block Medicaid from funding an abortion for a mentally retarded teenager who had been raped by her stepfather -- an act in direct violation of federal law, which requires states to pay for abortions in cases of rape.

He said he would oppose gay marriage "until Moses comes down with two stone tablets from Brokeback Mountain saying he's changed the rules."

In true Backman wingnut style  he claimed that a "holocaust" of abortions had artificially created a demand for Mexican labor.

Same phenomenon with Tim Pawlenty.  The Conservative Taliban Party (formerly known as the Republican Party) is virtually 100% extremist, hateful lunatics, but because the extremism is mostly also accompanied by a vicious streak of complete, sneering, ugly rhetoric of dehumanization of Liberals (and perceived Liberals who are actually quite moderate or even Corporatist) as well as centrists, as well as non ditto-head Republicans, anyone who acts nice-ish toward the majority of Americans (i.e. the 81% who are not Dick Cheney devotees) is labelled a "moderate" by the MSM.  "Oh, Rick Santorum probably couldn't win because he takes tough stances on the issues, so Republicans might look to gentler, more nuanced voices like Pawlenty or Huckabee."  The rhetoric might be 10% "gentler", but neither of these people have done 5 things in their entire legislative careers that haven't toed the line of absolute Conservate authoritarianism.
