Maplethorpe was the only name I could think of at the time I was writing. I'm sure there are many more recent examples of "Piss Christ" displays currently funded by NEA. Giving endowments to the arts does not create jobs. It simply gives more money to people who can't get real jobs (actors, poets, artists etc). That's not stimulus, that's welfare. As to your next point, I am certainly not BLAMING illegal immigrants for our economic woes, but wouldn't you agree that if we had 20 million less surplus workers that perhaps we wouldn't have such high jobless numbers among the Legal population? Just a thought... Thirdly, if this were a real "stimulus plan", and not a giveaway, I would be right there with you fighting the good fight for programs that could benefit us, Tim. But you an I both know that's not what this bill is... As for raising taxes, Tim, do you want to kill business in this country? If so, then go ahead and raise their taxes. Then we shall see what the bottom really looks like!!! The only way for our nation to rebuild is to let everything burn down and then start building it back. We are trying in vein (sp) to prop up a failed system that isn't worth saving at this point. :(

If the conservative party  hadnt racked up an 8 trillion dollar debt there would be no need for a stimulus pkg.

and paragraphs...who do you think you are, James Joyce?

BUT a typical conservative tactic, focus on on presumably egregious outrage like a small part of the NEA ...oh fuck it what's the point.

Taxes wont make one bit of difference, we are on the express elevator to hell. To continue the movie metaphor the mutant zombies are attacking and Bush used up all the ammo shooting helpless puppies...

I was more amused by the "fighting in vein (sp)." He knew he was spelling it wrong, yet didn't feel lucky enough to have a go at correcting it.

You are right, Bush did use all of the bullets on puppies. Its time to break out the flamethrower and burn all of it down!

Bobo I know conservatives are programmed to hate the arts.  A different way to think of the NEA is as an investment.  Many of the programs are educational and allow young people an chance to learn about art and discover their tallent.  Also, direct grants are hard to get and are relatively small.  However they do provide an oportunity for upcomming artists to get their work off the ground.  Although many of them will never make it and will go back to working at starbucks after their grant runs out, some will go on to be sucessful in the market.  When an artist becomes sucessful they usually become VERY sucessful and pay a lot of taxes.  The question does the change in taxes collected from the sucessfu l artists vs. the Barista they would have been justify the cost of the program?  Maybe the ROI on the NEA is negative as you suggest, but I wouldn't be too suprised if it was actually positive.

I enjoy the arts. I enjoy museums, ballet and shit like that. But dammit, dont call a 50 million dollar boost in their programs "stimulus". Call it what it is - PORK.

Its extra money that might work very short term, but it could have been better spent. Do you now how many children could be covered health care wise by 50 million dollars? thats worth more to me than some maplethorpe exhibit that only rich snobs have money to enjoy...

The film industry is different. Film employs a lot more folks and generates a lot more revenue than the fine arts. While it would be nice if we had the money to spare for things like supporting fine arts, we need to focus on getting the most bang for our bucks.

Health care is a good example. Every dollar spent on preventative care saves ten down the road as well as emplying all those health care providers.
