Remember Nader?  Every vote for Nader was a vote away from Gore, and he cost Gore the election.

The problem with a third party in a voting system with ours is just that.  Every vote for the third party is a vote away from the 2nd best party(even though the dems are weak and some corporatist, they still are better than the republicans.)  

So If we wanted to have a third party, we would have to switch voting systems, which isn't happening anytime soon.
