When you buy in to the myth of "we are all Americans" what you are in effect saying is the only way to be American is to emulate the white culture..that's the 'code" pushed by conservatives. I'm surprised you buy into that crap.
Bobo's objection is because race threatens him. Conservative objection is because minorities tend to vote Democratic threatening them. Attacking the patriotism of racial identity is a method of demonizing minority culture and attempting to create a narrative that conservative values, ie white and christian and European based are inherently "American"
Equating culture with race is not only immoral, it's also a good way to get people killed.

Sometimes we don't see it right away, but the illogic of it and the consequences of doing it are inescapable. While it's very easy to make that equation, all you have to do is look out the window to see that it doesn't make sense to do.
Rwanda, for instance, was such a case. The reason that people of opposing sides, neighbors, were able to sleep in each others' homes to save their lives was because they were of the same culture, despite what the instigators of the genocide wanted others to believe -- and believed themselves.
