I really had no idea that this wasn't common knowledge. I can't remember exactly when I first heard it, but I assume it must have been after the date you give (the interviews in 2007), and it's come up several times since then.

I think one of the perceptions over here in Britain is that Bush thought he was undertaking a modern day crusade, inspired by God.
