My friend's wife - conservative with surprising streaks of liberal here and there was trying to convince me that Single Payer plans were no good because It Would Mean Government Takeover Of Health Care. Yes, I tried to explain it was more of an accounting change, but she didn't get it (which means I was unable to explain it well).

Then she asked if I remembered the Public Health clinics we had in California a couple of decades ago and wondered where they went? >couREAGANgh< I said, sure, used 'em myself - it was back when our county had a hospital and public health facilities, but those days are loooong gone.

So she asked me, "Why can't they start that back up? I'd rather see that than a governmant takeover like that single payer thing."

"But..but..." The utter irony overwhelmed me. "Don't you realize that would mean the government would be hiring doctors and nurses and running clinics and assigning patients to doctors - actually taking over health care?"

"Not as bad as what YOU were talking about!"

My head is still spinning.

That was done decades ago, so it can't be as bad as something that was never tried before! Old is good, new is bad!

But your "accounting change" comparison was spot on. I would not know how to explain any other way...
money pooled differently? Difference piggy bank and banking institution? Fire extinguisher and fire department?

in your people skills. I am sure you will be able to find enough doctors who are greedy assholes and who will be panting after your dollars if you pay cash for your medical expenses. I have heard of certain practices that perform extended prostate exams, if you pay the right amount. Maybe even with happy ending...

You have written in an earlier post that you have a huge deductible anyway, chances are you are being duped by your insurance company (or you fooled yourself, which is just as likely).

So, just do us a favor, become a cash patient and stop worrying what the decent people will do with their health care.
