I buy water in gallons, refill the bottle at the Glacier filtered water machine for 25 or 30 cents a gallon about ten times, and then recycle the bottle and buy a new one. Now, the Glacier machine is connected to the public water supply, but the treatment processes make a huge difference both in taste and healthfulness.

Tap water here in San Diego is just horrendously undrinkable until it's been filtered. Among other things, the Colorado river is contaminated by an ongoing leak of radioactive waste.

Oh, and I have been doing this routine for my drinking water since the summer of 1977.
