Is how stupid people keep claiming Southern food is African American food.
I grew up in the South and was raised eating fried chicken, collard greens, watermelon, catfish, fatback, Bar B Qued ribs, chitlins, Country Fried Steak, ham hock, and even the occasional pigs feet.
It's what people in the South eat. Has nothing to do with race, it has to do with region.
Any person be they black, white, brown, or green who really believes that any of the food items listed above is somehow race specific or "racist" is racist.
One of the great traditions of the South and joys of my youth was my father stopping on the roadside to buy a watermelon from the farmer who had set his truck up on the side of the road to sell his produce. They were referred to as "peddlers" because they peddled their wares. Truck bought watermelons where always better than the ones you bought at the store. Often you took it to the creek (in my case it was called "cold water creek" and let it sit in the creek to chill while lunch was served, a plethera of food including many of the items mentioned above but always potato salad.
As a young teen a Southern boy learns how to "spike" a watermelon with a bottle of cheap alcohol and let it sit for a few days before serving at the swimming hole for a real party.
Only fucking idiots or ignorant people including Chris Mathews choose to interject "race" into what was a way of life for the majority of people who grew up in the South.
Would it have been better if he has said "couldn't sell ice water in hell" or perhaps "couldn't sell pot at a Grateful Dead concert".
