A Statement From John Walsh:
I'm appalled and heartbroken by the news concerning Representative Mark Foley.
As you may know, Congressman Foley helped write, and worked for passage of, the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, which President Bush signed into law this summer. Those of us who worked with him on this issue feel really betrayed and completely confused.
This sad turn of events underscores something that I've talked about for a long time: some people's compulsions are so strong that they'll risk anything. And, until we figure out how to cure these people, they need to be held accountable for their actions. I don't care whether they're a cop, a clergyman -- or a congressman. I think this is a real life lesson, and an ironic lesson, that someone could lead this double life, yet say that he was a champion for children.
We can't let this lessen our determination to protect our children from predators; in fact, if anything it should strengthen our resolve.
