NORTH KOREA SETS OFF NUKE!

Interesting, looks like South Korea verified a 4.2 quake.

I guess we have to welcome them to the club officially.

My mistake, it appears the quake was 3.6-3.7 in magnitude.

And check this out:

SOuth Korean UN Secretary General! With North Korea just setting of its firtst nuke! Get ready for some fire works!

Of course its not interesting, I am sure the stock market will drop tomorrow.

That is a sad thing, I am currently up 8.6% in the last 10 months and was aiming for 15% /year, but I am sure that nothing will come from this North Korea business.

After all, they only did it to get attention and bribes.

If we ignore them they will go away, after all, what's the worst they could do? Nuke Seoul?

Kim Jong is nuts, but he's not naive. He knows that an attack on Seoul would never get through.

He would need a large bomber to carry the nuke, and we or the Koreans would shoot it out of the sky long before it reached the city.

Since he can't fit a nuke on a missle, North Korea's nukes are not a threat to anyone.

Besides, if he did sell, or give one to terrorists, or Iran we could analyse the fallout with a spectrometer and determine that the Plutonium used came from Kim's reactor.

Any way you slice it, if Kim uses his bombs in anger, he will lose his country, and losing absolute power is the one thing he fears.

hmmmm

Axis of Evil members Jong Ill and Ackma-dinijad both want nukes now.

At least Sadam will not be getting any nukes.

by acroso on 10/08/2006 11:58:11 PM EST

Japan will now race to get nukes also to blow the hell out of NK.

South Korea's market's are on a downward move right now.

Iran & Iraq nuking each other and that is bad how? OOPs I forgot, OIL!

I've said it all along that North Korea has always been the proof that Bush n' pal's NEVER cared about WMD's, they were simply a convineint scare tactic to justify their imperial wars for OIL!

There has always been a greater threat of terrorists getting ahold of a rogue soviet nuke than getting one developed by any of the "Axis of Evil".  Yet we've spent 400 Billion invading iraq and spent next to nothing making sure that former soviet nukes don't fall into al-Queda hands.  Well not nothing just ~0.01% as much as we spend in iraq.

http://www.time.com/time/co vers/1101050214/wterror.htm l

They are now trying to use the same tactics to justify invading Iran for their 4 million barrels of oil per day (most of which currently under contract to china).  The bottom line is the treat posed by North Korean, Iranian, or even Iraqi nukes always has been very very low.  They may or may not "support" terrorists, but they would never give them a bomb bacause it could be traced back to them.  The most important thing to any dictator is power, and it's hard to maintain power when your whole country is a smoking ruin.

I'm not in any way trying to say that Korean and Iranian nukes are inharently good things, i'm just saying i'm not that scared, and neither is Ole Georgie Boy.

Reports are that the president has not yet been briefed about the test.  He will be notified once the preliminary seismic measurements are confirmed by credible human intelligence obtained from a tortured prisoner.

by RealityBias on 10/09/2006 12:19:33 AM EST

Nobody could have seen that coming.

by nfc on 10/09/2006 01:24:19 AM EST

North Korea is saying they may set off another nuke.

The world is going crazy, but I don't see why?

They have 6-8 bombs, each one they test is one less they have.

So why is the world going crazy?

We now know they have the bomb, and now its 5-7, soon perhaps, 4-6.

I would love to see 3 tests, but from the sound of it that might start a war.

by adamg on 10/09/2006 09:56:18 AM EST

World is not crazy

Put yourself in their place.

Options  get invaded by US

or get Nukes

What would you do?

What the hell is happening to the country of Teddy Roosevelt and George S Patton?

I think I suffered minor whiplash the other day when I cranked my head around to get a better look at a little kid with a skull the size of a watermelon. It turned out not to be a genetic deformity or anything like that. His overprotective mother had strapped a huge crash helmet on him before letting him ride his little tricycle. The sun will set on the American empire when that kid and his classmates are in charge.

Aparently some elementary schools are satarting to ban tag on the playground!  Unfortunatly it's not just the overprotective mothers, it's also the overactive lawyers that are turning us into such pussies.

The issue isn't that they are afraid we'll nuke them.

What they are afraid of is being attacked by us, period.

N. Korea was the biggest threat to us in terms of WMD and we turned our back on them. The rest of the world is not stupid. To the rest of the world beating up on Saddam was the equivalent of beating up the nerd in the class. While letting the real "threat" walk.

After 911 Afganistan should have been first and FINISHED first. After COMPLETELY DESTROYING the Taliban & Bin Laden we would have been in a much better position Militarily to deal with Iran and N. Korea.

In fact right after the initial invasion of Iraq, Iran WANTED TO MAKE A DEAL and Bush said no.

Now we are BOGGED down in Iraq, WE WON THE WAR, we are losing the occupation. What was the purpose of invading? OCCUPATION? They are in a civil war to determine who will rule. The timing of our departure will not stop this from happening.

The truth is You Pubs are the most immoral of sorts: What do you care about the deaths of Hundreds of Thousands of innocent Iraqis' or a couple of thousand of our troops. Just so long as Halliburton et al make their Billions of dollars. Bush doesn't even know the difference between shias and shiites. Did you know that in reality Saddam (without meaning to) was our best friend in the region.

Pubs talk of terrorist training camps, yet they never mention the camps that exist in Saudi Arabia or the state sponsered school which teach children to be Islamic fanatics. Why is it OK for certain countries like Saudi Arabia or Pakistan to harbor terrorists?

Where is your outrage. If a Dem was in office YOU would be going nuts. But since it's good ole George you remain silent like the real FRENCH POODLE you are.

You don't care about terrorist or you would demand Bushs' impeachment for his failures from Bin Laden to our ports. What about Katrina, think terrorist might get the idea to blow the levis at high tide? After 911 how could George sit back and allow AMERICAN CITIZENS to drown without lifting a finger. Oh that's right N.O. is a little less than White so I guess it doesn't matter. They don't vote Republican anyway.

Just remember Jesus loved us sinners, so much so that he allowed himself to be tortured to death for our sins. But of all sinners Jesus really didn't have a lot of time for the Rich or for Hypocrites (that means REPUBLICANS).

It seems that the nuke test pulled a 1 KT yield, which is much lower than it should have been.

Thus it seems, the North Korean bomb was a near dud, very inefficient.

Perhaps that is why they wish to test another one, to get it right this time.

Just 2 days ago the media was reporting that experts expected the North Koreans to have 20 KT bombs.

If Kim can rattle some windows with a 6.0 magnitude quake then perhaps the world will take him seriously.

For now it seems that Kim;s bombs, besides being unruley, 4 tons beasts, are also woefully inefficient.

I read somewhere that the Hiroshima bomb was 10% efficient and that yielded 10-15KT, while being the same size as the Korean bombs.

So Kim's current design is yielding 1% or less efficiency, (meaning less than 1% of the available U-235 is fissioned).

US bombs had reached 90% by 1990 I believe, and by now might be higher.

Considering the fact that the current bombs in the NK arsenal weigh several thousand pounds, and the Taipo-Dong has a max payload of 1,850 LBS, I think we have some time before the US is threatened by anything Kim can throw at us. He will probably keel over dead before he ever gets a single missle capable of nuking a US city.

by adamg on 10/09/2006 10:05:32 PM EST

Kim Jong Il, perhaps wanting to recapture attention as the Nuclear Boogieman of the World back from Iran, publicly announced and then detonated a nuclear device.

The world’s leading powers, including Asian, have united in condemning this provocative act, and called for a cease to North Korean’s pursuit of nuclear armaments, or the imposition of new sanctions.

Some could argue that this is an overreaction, especially by nuke rich countries, to this economically weak, starving country. However North Korea is, of course, militarily strong, even though their nuclear weaponry and delivery systems are still unproven.

Kim Jong Il, who could be described as Idi Amin on radioactive kimchi, appears to go beyond cleverness at times, in his unstable behavior. Being God of a country can do that.

Leaders of the Democrat Party should assemble a coalition of retired military leaders, diplomats, scientists, religious, business, union, and other leaders, to demand that the United States lead efforts to bring Worldwide Nuclear Disarmament.

Democrats should immediately speak out for this goal, and commit to accomplishing it. The Bush Administration’s neo-conservatives probably won’t buy into this. Is that anything new?

Furthermore, many of the religious right might oppose this as another postponement of their dearly awaited Armageddon and Rapture. Some Christians, for nearly two thousand years, have mistakenly predicted the imminent end of the world. But then again, “Hope Springs Eternal”.

It’s hard to think of any other act which could improve the image of the United States more, than leading the World to universal nuclear disarmament. Some would oppose this, such as some radical or dictatorial countries. We hope it would draw the support of most of the world’s leading countries; even India and Pakistan, with mutual de-nuking. With strong enforcement teeth, Israel might join the Cause.

An international agreement, with a UN adoption, would probably be necessary to put this into effect. Perhaps a few bombs might be kept under international control, to deflect an approaching asteroid.

Many will ask, “What if a ban is implemented, and a renegade state or radical group retains or makes a new bomb? Let’s not kid ourselves, if diplomatic and other peaceful methods don’t persuade compliance, and they may need to be first tried and tried again, strong military enforcement means would be required.

Before the armies are sent in, we could send in a new international strike force to deal with these troublemakers. It might be called “Nuclear Emergency Unified Terminating Enforcement Regiment”, or “NEUTER” for short.

The absence of nuclear weapons worldwide would not lessen the military effectiveness of the United States. It might reduce the clout which we hold over everyone’s head, but we could still respond, as we have, using non nuclear means. In fact it should diminish tensions, and eliminate some of the hate from those who call us The World Bully.

What other way could we counter, so rapidly and meaningfully, the Ugly American image, counter the arguments of terrorist, and lead the world in a truly momentous march toward reason and harmony.

And if the Republicans and the “Want a War Religious Right Folks” don’t support it? Touché!

Above is an article from popular mechanics talking about KJI's WMD programs.  It boggles my mind how we were duped into the war in Iraq based on WMD! WMD! WMD!, yet we completely ignore a full range of active WMD programs in the DPRNK.  Talk about inconsistency.

NK may set off 3 more nukes! Holy shit that would be awsome! Imagine, them offing half of their arsenal, all underground!

Perhaps the rest of the world's grand plan is to saber rattle so loudly that NK tries to be defiant by blowing all their bombs in under ground tests. Seems like an ingenious plan that may just work.

by adamg on 10/18/2006 07:10:33 PM EST

dont think it would be awsome. I mean, they are still just practicing, in order to get better I mean, they arent out of pluto or U238 to enrich. A woodpecker has to break bark before he punches through to the trees core to get the bugs he wants.
