Time for a Democratic Senate! Sorry Republicans!

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

http://www.electoral-vote.c om/

Composite of polls show Dems ahead in the House AND the Senate.  Looks like (assuming no election fraud) some of us are going to be eating quite a few hats after November 7.

The question is, what then?  As soon as this happens we need to whip their asses into shape.  No more bullshit -- they will get stuff DONE or the American electorate will demand they answer for it.

First off the senate

New Jersey- Dem is too far ahead and will win. Tennessee- Corker is too far ahead and will win.

Ohio and Rhode Island and Penn will go Dem. Polls aren't close.

That leaves Montana which is at 47-47, Maryland where Steele is surging, and Missouri of course.

Dems seem to have a guaranteed +3 seat pickup. After that though I fail to see how it's obvious Dems will win the senate. If republicans sweep those last three I mentioned, you're looking at a lousy +2 seat gain because Steele would be taking a Dem seat. And does losing Chafee even count? Dewhine is a RINO although a decent RINO by RINO standards. We’re really only losing Santorum. If Steele wins, who knows maybe that is a fair trade?
If you think that scenario is unlikely well….I guess you’ll get your November surprise on Wednesday and you realize Bush won big.

----------------------

The house- I've seen polls one week at -10 and +10 the next. These polls are all over the map.

--------------------------- --

Last point the pollsters were wrong about how independents broke in 2004 and will be wrong again this year. I have little faith in the results they put out other than indicating general trends.

but I still have some doubts.

The GOP has a lock on 49 seats (with TN).

That leaves MT, MO, MD, VA.

We need a victory in one of these races to tie. That gives us the tie-breaker with Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman, our newly elected Republican Senator from CT.

Acroso, can the GOP take one of the four Senate races?

The media is guilty of a collective groupthink, and I've become very positive this is the case. The media coverage of this election vs 02 is about 10X as much because the Dems are doing well in this one.

Remember the polling done before the 04 election that had libs winning in a landslide. We all knew it was bogus.

Some of the more egregious

Tennessee: Zogby Poll: Tennessee numbers. Zogby showed Bush +3.3%, acutal was 14%.

W. Virginia: Zogby Poll: Bush +4.5% Actual: Bush +13% Difference between Poll and Actual: Bush +8.5%

Iowa: Zogby Poll: Kerry +6% Actual: Bush +5% Difference between Poll and Actual: Bush +11%

Florida: Zogby Poll: Kerry +1% Actual: Bush +5% Difference between Poll and Actual: Bush +6%

Wisconsin: Zogby Poll: Kerry +7% Actual: Kerry +1% Difference between Poll and Actual: Bush +6%

Republicans won't win in VA. I think Steele will win and I also think Burns will win. Talent is the real question mark.

If we get Steele for Santorum and then lose Talent. Even though the Dem will have picked up a few seats, I still consider it almost only a -1.

I think these polls will be exposed

You don't get it. These polls are wrong. Republicans WILL come out and vote. Democrats will sleep in. We're already seeing it happening in Florida-13, Katherine Harris's old seat that realclearpolitics has been listing as one of the 18 tossups.

Not only do the Dems lack a good turnout program, but its base itself is a very undetermined group.

I’ll be sure and tell you all the reason why I think you lost after Tuesday.

As for my over/under of four turnovers in the Senate, who knew that all four tight races would flip by 0.00001%?’m good, but I’m not that good!

Democrats said Eisenhower was dumb.

Democrats said Reagan was dumb.

Democrats said Ford was dumb. (OK, they were right about Ford.)

Democrats said Bush 41 was dumb.

This "wave" stuff is fake- I must inform you all.

We have the same numbers on the generic ballot as in 2002 according to Gallup and the GOP is more favorable than in 2002 the two other polls out this weekend. We have a stronger GOTV effort, twice the money going into these races as Democrats, and the races being fought entirely in heavily red GOP districts. Bush, McCain, Laura, Rice as barnstorming, and on top of that we have Kerry out insulting the troops and the heartland. Even more important is the trend that is occurring this weekend. We don’t have new polls on any of these races, but they have no doubt just tilted heavily red. Emmanuel has overreached shooting for too many districts most of which he never had a chance at in the first place instead of concentrating on gain able blue states. Dean meanwhile has refused to put money into these races with the exception of a last minute loan. Now the dems are going after Arizona in the last days of the campaign where Kyle is soundly ahead?

After the Dems get their clocks cleaned, it will be blame Diebold. This is the only possible out Dems have when the people speak loud and clearly on Tuesday that they don't want the contract with terrorists.

God is back at it with his voter suppression techniques

Actually doesn't look too bad for Dems. What really looks bad is their poll numbers falling like a rock. There will be light raining in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

Montana and Tennessee look to be hit hard.

Missouri, Michigan and Arizona will be spared

I can't even see R.I. in that mix- it might get a tad though.
New Jersey might get a tad bit of rain also.

I guess it's the global warming effort somehow coming out to help the GOP.

by acroso on 11/06/2006 07:39:23 PM EST

I've noticed Dems have taken a liking to the 50% rule- the idea that if incumbants do not have their polls at above 50% on the last day of polling, today, they lose.

By this measure George Allen is a gonner, Burns, Chafee, etc are all gone also. Talent is gone (just barely) and Dewhine is long gone. Santorum is gone.

so if the polls are up to date and accurate (I don't think they are) that's a +6 for dems.

O WAIT

In Michigan

DeVos was down 46%-44%; Bouchard 47%-43%, in the Mitchell poll, conducted Wednesday and Thursday last week, and Sunday night.

By this standard, Republicans have jsut won Michigan, and by a bigger margen than dems won in Montana etc.

bogus poll you say?

Ok a second was just released

Gov. Jennifer Granholm and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow carry leads into Tuesday's voting, according to results from the final Detroit News/WXYZ-TV tracking poll.

Granholm led Republican challenger Dick DeVos, 49 to 42 percent -- unchanged from the previous reading on Friday. Stabenow was ahead of Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, her Republican challenger for the U.S. Senate, 49-41, a 3-percentage point drop from her 11-point lead on Friday.

So this election by that "rule" is now in play.

What is going on in Maryland? Who knows- no one has any polls!

by acroso on 11/06/2006 11:09:09 PM EST

by jarett on 11/07/2006 01:29:12 AM EST

I think she'll win probably, but she is an incumbant and at doesn't yet have 50%.

By the 50% incumbant rule, republicans pick up Michigan if you use that rule.

I find that interesting.

by acroso on 11/07/2006 01:33:52 AM EST

Stabenow did little in this campaign to point out the excellent work she's done in the Senate on behalf of police, firefighters and other first-responders, which would have given Michigan voters an even better reason to send her back. That said, she's gotten the endorsement of almost every newspaper in Michigan and leads GOP opponent Mike Bouchard by large, double-digit numbers in every recent poll and will win easily -- though not by double digits.

by SamHammich on 11/07/2006 09:53:00 AM EST

GOP holds senate big time Prediction- 53 GOP, 46 libs and Lieberman.

----

Republicans will lose Santorum, DeWhine, and Chafee-3 seats

Of the previous three they will win at least 1, and I never mentioned Bouchard who could also win as a 4th opportunity.

We're looking at losing a couple seats at most. Chafee, Dewhine, and Frist are not the most reliable republicans  and not the worst losses anyway

----

Looks like Menedez is going down also as Sabato hints.

-----

So what will happen in 2006? Since early in the year, I maintained that the over/under for Democrat gains was 20 House seats and 4 Senate seats. At this late
date, I see no reason to change the prediction.

-----

47-47 Burns tied and surging  It’s the trend that is important. The previous poll I saw was 46-43. The independents are breaking heavily GOP and Tester is stuck with the not-so-silent and outspoken minority.

 -----

Hmmm I think I see a trend developing here! ( predicting a Burns win in Montana)

-----------

I saw one site claim the GOP was -5 in 94.
Another site had them at -3.4 in 94
That resulted in a 50-60 seat loss

So if we anywhere near -6 and trending positive, I think the GOP is set this election

 -----

Kook Political Report
House: Dems gain 20-35 seats
Senate: Dems gain 4-6 seats

Rottenberg Political Report:
House: Dems gain 34-40 seats
Senate: Dems gain 5-7 seats

Evans
Novak Report:
House: Dems gain 20 seats
Senate: Dems gain 5 seats

I don't believe them!

----------

GOP CAMPAIGNS MAKING IMPACT. Another significant reason for Republican gains can be found in the GOP’s 72-hour get out the vote program which is now in full swing. This poll showed that Republicans have made a greater impact than Democrats with TV ads (+6), mailings (+6), and phone calls (+6).

ANDLING OF ISSUES. A big reason for Republican gains is that trust on key issues has increased over the past few weeks. Built on recent good economic news, Republicans handling on the economy has improved a net-9 points from a week ago. Republicans have also seen significant gains on handling of taxes (+7), Iraq (+7) and national security (+4).

Democrats picked up at least 28 seats; they needed 15 to capture a majority in the House. (Latest House news)

Democrats retained two of their Senate seats that were considered competitive, in New Jersey and Maryland.

Defying the traditional political maxim that "all politics is local," 62 percent of voters said in exit polls that national issues mattered more than local issues.

"Democrats shifted the balance of power on Capitol Hill Tuesday night, capturing control of the U.S. House of Representatives and gaining ground in the Senate," declared the conservative Fox News channel -- the first network to call the presidency for Bush in 2000. Fox was behind CNN and NBC in calling the House for Democrats.

Tom DeLay: "Democrats didn't win, the Republicans lost"

by MRFred on 11/08/2006 11:37:16 AM EST

"You don't get it.

I’ll be sure and tell you all the reason why I think you lost after Tuesday."

The troll said: "Last point the pollsters were wrong about how independents broke in 2004 and  I have little faith in the results they put out other than indicating general trends."

-------

The reality is:

"They're independents. They are like a third sex. Who needs them? But in fact is this year they really had their revenge. Independents voted almost 60 percent for the Democrats. We haven't seen that since exit polling began about 30 years ago. This was swing voters swinging hard.  Bill Schneider, CNN."

No one has ever clarified what "victory" means.  Define clearly what the goals are -- now that you HAVE to and cannot rely on jingoism to do whatever you want, then stamp it with the brand of "U.S. Victory In Iraq" -- and then we can start discussing bipartisan measures to accomplish it.

We'll get shit done.  Pelosi's 100 Hour Plan will get out there and America will highly approve of it.

We'll also introduce a little accountability.  The 110th Congress will investigate the 109th Congress and the Presidency.

I believe you're wrong, and we'll both be pleasantly surprised by how much positive change happens.

"We'll get shit done."

"The 110th Congress will investigate the 109th Congress and the Presidency."

Let's examine these two statements, side-by-side. Then, let's remember that 40 Senators can block any proposed bill from moving forward with a filibuster. (The GOP has 49 Senators.) Let's also remember that President Bush can veto any Dem legislation.

Congressional investigations? Bring it on! That is the only thing that will happen in Congress over the next two years. And who will the American people blame for in November 2008?

We are ready for a fight! And KenTX is in the fukkin house!

Day One: Put new rules in place to "break the link between lobbyists and legislation."

Surely you have no problem with this.

Day Two: Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Or this.

Time remaining until 100 hours: Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, maybe in one step. Cut the interest rate on student loans in half. Allow the government to negotiate directly with the pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices for Medicare patients.

You probably bristle at the thought of raising the minimum wage.  Tough to argue AGAINST student loans and old people, though.

Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds _ "I hope with a veto-proof majority," she added in an Associated Press interview Thursday.

As you are pro-death, I'm sure you have no problem with this either.

All the days after that: "Pay as you go," meaning no increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority.

::cheers from both sides of the aisle::

To do that, she said, Bush-era tax cuts would have to be rolled back for those above "a certain level." She mentioned annual incomes of $250,000 or $300,000 a year and higher, and said tax rates for those individuals might revert to those of the Clinton era. Details will have to be worked out, she emphasized.

I know you're not THIS rich.  We engineers are comfortable, but not that comfortable.

"We believe in the marketplace," Pelosi said of Democrats, then drew a contrast with Republicans. "They have only rewarded wealth, not work.

Yeah, pretty much spot-on, although that's not part of her agenda.

I can say i'm just a little bit worried that the Democrats just won them selves enough rope to hang themselves in 2008.  The republicans also helped set the stage by repeating that the democrats want to raise taxes throughout the election cycle.  Now that the have the power, that is most likely what they will do.

We all know that the republicans have been terribly irresponsible for the past 6 years with the budget by cutting taxes and increasing spending.  This process has to be reversed.  The problem is voters care a whole lot less about fiscal responsibility than they do about taxes (look at the personal finances of the average american).  If the Democrats save us from this dangerous problem the public will not reward them for responsibilty, they will punish them for cutting benifits or raising taxes.

I propose that instead of raising taxes, we leave things alone and start a dangerous game of chicken with the republicans.  They are the ones who are supposed to be for fiscal responsibility arn't they?  Make them make the first move so they can't nail us with it in the next election cycle.  Just a thought.

"I propose that instead of raising taxes, we leave things alone and start a dangerous game of chicken with the republicans."

You can't raise taxes. The GOP filibuster and veto will never allow it.

If you want to balance the budget, your only option is to cut spending. I guarantee Republicans will support Democrats if they start talking about budget cuts.

!!!

Anyone besides me ponder this yet?

by acroso on 11/09/2006 05:37:11 PM EST

In 2008 the case is the opposite
12 Dems
21 Republicans

With the Dems- They won 5 or so too close to calls in 2000, then in 2006 they ran the table. Because of that, we're going to have a lobsided 2012.
