This New York Times editorial gets it exactly right. Over the last several months, the NYT editorial board has understood and explained the problems in the country better than anyone else in the media.

They understand the gravity of the problems we face. They understand these are not normal times. We just wish they could influence the rest of the media to get to the same place.

What is Sad (none / 0)
The same people that will read and actually understand this are the same one's that are already active in the political process. The sad truth is a majority of Amricans don't even vote. We're losing Democracy through apathy!

Everyone votes - by LAW.

I have nothing to base it on, but I have a feeling that "third parties" would play a much more important role.

One of the resaons people don't vote is their disgust with BOTH parties, but know that third party candidates are almost always pointless. (KenTX - did you vote for Kinky yet?)

Considering the limited pool or white land owners who originally voted and the hard fought battles to secure the right for ALL citizens to have the RIGHT to vote, maybe it's time to consider it a DUTY of citizenship.

Might shake up those permanent encumbacies a bit.

Here in Norway it's the same. Proportional Representation is a much more rational and true multi-party system. It seems that the largest 3-4 parties have the most power but no party ever has as much power as we see in most Republican or sometimes Democratic administrations.

They have it right, but they've sat on their hands for the past six years, having been cowed into submission by neocon demonizing of their trademarks and brand.
