Americans Aren't Dumb, We're Just a Little Slow

After the 2004 election, The Daily Mirror of Great Britain ran the famous headline: "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?"

The Daily Mirror was wrong. We aren't dumb, we're just a little slow to adapt to the facts.

This happens in every society. Trends, fashions and even facts take a while to reach the masses. This is why some TV shows are popular after their best seasons are behind them. It's why Americans all over the country are wearing Ugg boots two years after they're already out of fashion (I know nothing about fashion, so I hope that analogy was correct - I'm still wearing clothes from the 80's, so that's how slow to adapt I am).

The markets almost always work, whether they are business, social or political markets. But they don't work instantly. It takes time to assimilate information. So, in 2006 it appears the political market has caught up to the facts. It's Bush who is an idiot, not Americans.

In 2000, half of all my friends and family were Republicans, including me. In 2006, none of us are. When you look back, that isn't even that long a stretch of time. It's just been a brutal six years, so it seems like it was an eternity. The facts caught up with us, and we are not alone.

I hope the world forgives us and sees the beating we are about to give the Republicans today in the polls as a sign of our remorse and our first step back toward the light. We plan to be the strong and just leaders of the free world again.

Of course, if the Republicans do not suffer heavy losses and retain control, I will have to take all this back. And perhaps the Daily Mirror can run another headline rightfully chastising us. Because this time around - we know. And if we let these guys back in control after we already knew what they were capable of - then it is entirely our fault. No more excuses. Today is the day. What message do you want to send?

i think what you're trying to say is:

"There's an old saying in Tennessee -- I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee -- that says fool me once (pause), shame on..... (long, long pause) shame on you. (pause, then rapidly) ... and fool me we can't get fooled again."

i don't share your optimism that we aren't dumb.  i know way too many people who have drunk the conservative kool aid and continue to imbibe...

Having access and reading what is in the liberal blogosphere, and listening to folk like the Young Turks, it is hard to imagine that those who don't cannot see what you do.

But if everywhere around you is saying the Earth is flat, ridiculing the idea that down might be up for the folk on the other side, and it looks basicly flat from where you are standing.... then the idea that you might think the earth flat is not so astounding. No matter how obvious the reality to folks with better sources of information.

Okay, Chenk, you maybe right. But if another 59,054,087 keep these current yes-men in office, can I then say then we, as Americans, are dumb?

While we bask in our victory, let's not forget to give credit where credit is due. HBO showed a documentary last week about the voting fraud of the DIebold machines that jeopordize the democracy of this contry. The GOP tried in vain to supress this documentary, but if you examine the election day results you will find that many people chose to vote by paper ballot, either because they distrusted the machines or the machines were just faulty, a poignant symbolism of the current administration. I think that this documentary opened the eyes of many voters who realized the true stakes involved, the loss of our country and they responded en masse. I am proud of you America. Keep up the good work. And Thank you HBO.

How could your friends resist the truth.  My friends are slower than your friends.   They are resisting.  They are not quite as intelligent as yours.  However if the Dems make good things happen,  and things improve,  we will then win them over.  Cenk,   seriously you need to read a book on "de-programming"& nbsp; so you can help the newbies who were entranced by the right wing magical mind control machine.  As these republicans start to shrugg the last 9 years of programming out of thier heads.  like people comming out of a "religious cult like group"   they will make our party stronger but only if the dems don't fuck this up.they need this deprogramming.  Just think you can do it without anyone realizing they are being helped by your deprogramming.

Who is this woman?  I don't know but I don't like the way she is framing the whole debate.  The truth of the matter is that conservatism is a sham, a series of wedge issues that Republicans have used to control the country by virtue of an undereducated electorate?

Nancy Pelosi needs to cross the aisle?  Hell no!  She needs to push popular legislation that the opposition cannot help but to get on board with lest they loose even more public opinion.
