Old dogs, new tricks

So here it is, my first attempt at assimilating into this new site.

Up until now I have found myself fighting the new format, looking for what is wrong with this page and what was good about the old page. Difficulties with logging in and fighting change have been formost in my thoughts. I do see that there are many new people posting, so perhaps the change will be a good thing in the end. Maybe I'll just have to go get drunk to grieve for that that is lost and to celebrate what might be. Such is life, Eh.

I'm with you brother.  I've pretty much given up trying
to understand why I can't get the post form to at least
behave the same way twice.  So I've resigned myself to
looking at other people's posts.

I have an important one to get out tonight, though.  So
far, it's taken me about 2 hours and 40 or so attempts,
and I'm not even close to getting it the way I want it.

As soon as we saw Ken could do it...

DA, this editor is extremely limited, there's not much you can do,

I've found it easier to type out the whole post and then go back and highlight the words or phrases I want to italicize or bold - otherwise, I run into recurring format problems. If you want to copy something inside the Comment area, you have to highlight and Ctri+C, but you can paste with a right click. Go figure.

Same with links. Write out the phrase and then highlight it and click on the link button. I have to hold down my Ctrl at the same time because of my pop-up blocker (pita).

If you copy from another source, I recommend pasting it to Notebook first, to get rid of all the formating. Then copy & paste into the Comment section.

I also recommend copying it when you are ready to submit it, just in case...

I was struggling to get my first post the way I wanted it. The editing tools just didn't seem to work well with my browser. I clicked to the My Preferences page. I clicked through to the Interface page of my preferences and I unchecked the WYSIWYG option. This allows me to post without any problems.

After reading your posts I don't feel quite so much like an inept fool. I have to admit, things were looking grim. But Tim's first post lit up my day, news that I wasn't going to find for myself just stumbling around the web blindly. Maybe they will work things out and it will all get easier.

It seems that posting is not possible using Safari, but there are copious messages warning that this site is not yet Safari-supported. IE 5.2 (Tiger) and Netscape 7 (OS 9) both work fine for me.

I haven't had a problem with formatting or pasting. In general, I write everything in an off-line editor and then just paste it in. With formatting, I use the html tags and haven't had a problem with it. If you know them, it might make things a little easier to do it that way.

Did you do as Twba did and unclick the WYSIWYG? I've tried using HTML and it always comes through as regular text. (I have NOT turned off WYSIWYG).
