Senator Harkin on The Young Turks -- May 9, 2006

Interview with Senator Tom Harkin.

Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) was on the show tonight. We talked about the president's nominee for CIA Director, Michael Hayden. We also mentioned Senator Feingold's censure resolution, Democratic reaction to it and how the party needs to be stronger in general in fighting back against the administration. Finally, we talked about what Democrats can do to help bring down gas prices.

Here are some quotes from the interview:

On Michael Hayden to head the CIA:

"This is a guy who's been in charge of all of the secret spying on Americans!"

In reference to selecting Hayden to "cover the ass" of the Administration, Harkin says:

"I have no doubt about it... this Administration doesn't really want intelligence. They want confirmation of their ideology... The President is trying to CYA (cover your ass)." (This quote was in context to a question we asked about the president's effort to CYA. The Senator was simply responding to the question.)

It Smells Like 1974 (my personal favorite quote):

"A lot of people are saying this could be like 1994, when the Republicans took over... I have to say it's not like that. It's like 1974. Think about it: we had a war we were stuck in we couldn't get out of, people were fed up with it. 1973 we had the first oil shock... people were mad about the price of gasoline... and we had all these scandals -- Nixon, Agnew... and Nixon had to resign. What have we got this year? We have a war stuck in we can't get out of, all of these oil shocks, and all of these scandals of all of these Republicans out there. It smells like 1974."

On the Democratic Party:

"We don't have a clear leader in the Democratic party now... the Democrats better get their act together!"

Also, listen for what he has to say about Al Gore for President. Very interesting. The whole interview can be heard here:

In this show Cenk mentioned something about bringing in an expert to explain oil and why it is so important. I think that's a great idea.

There are geologists who have written books explaining the technical details of peak oil. They all predicted the inability to expand oil production that we face today. As with global warming, they have been attacked by FUD-mongers all along. The how and why of peak oil is not what Cenk brought up, but you have to at least believe it's true to get the full impact of the problem. Julian Darley has made the rounds talking about peak oil.

Once we understand that per-capita production of oil will be reduced drastically within our lifetime, we need to examine what that will look like. The "End of Suburbia" sounds alarming, but in that movie James Howard Kunstler does a good job of explaining how oil has shaped our society, and all the things we wouldn't have if it were gone.

Since this is a political show, I would recommend simply trying to get Roscoe Bartlett to talk about it. His peak oil presentations in Congress (to an empty chamber) were excellent.

You can't understand the future without understanding energy, and the lack of understanding that I see in public policy wonks is scary. You can't have definitive discussions on fuel prices and resource wars without getting deeper into the science and history.
