Reuters is reporting local Iraqi politicians have consigned themselves to the fact that Iraq has failed and there will be three new states. Some have already begun the partition. Baghdad will be split into two and Iraq will have three different states.

This should have happened immediately after Saddam was deposed. We could have saved many lives.

We still would have been forced to kill the thousands of foreign jihadists, but partitioning Iraq would have taken Baathists out of the equation.

Long live Kurdistan, Shiastan, and Sunnistan!

It may end up being one state, Iraq, still, but that is governed by Federalism. This is kind of what has always been proposed. I can't remember, which group wanted a strong Federal government- I think the Sunnis wanted that because they didn't have natural resources in their area? I remember them arguing about this early in the constitution dicussions?

I really think this is for the best. Hopefully the different factions in Iraq can govern themselves reasonably within their individual states but help build a stronger overall Iraq under a federal government. It will be a good test of REAL democracy: People with different ideas being able to work for the good of everyone.
