how the Bush administration will sell an Iran war

This is how the Bush administration will sell an Iran war:

Iran will be goaded into attacking “first” and America will buy it because they won’t understand that a Naval Blockade by US Forces is legally considered an Act of War. Bush will claim an “unprovoked” attack on “peaceful” Navy ships if Iran feels the need to defend themselves against an aggressor without mentioning that the blockade itself is “the first volley.” American forces “defend” themselves by blowing the hell out of all of the previously plotted targets.

Bush will again claim the UN Resolution authorized the presence of US ships and Article 42 covers his actions, but that will not be true – but since it will be UN people complaining, they will be marginalized, as they always are. Iran will present Article 51 as it’s defense.

Meanwhile, US Newspapers and Cable TV will be repeating Bushies saying “They attacked us first.” For those who like coincidences, this is very similar to Israel’s claim of Hezbollah attacking “first” for their justification to invade Lebanon.

The plans are underway from the sounds of it. “Prepare to deploy” orders for Oct 1 for support ships, and there are already a couple of groups over there. As noted in Time magazine, “when a second request, from the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), asked for fresh eyes on long-standing U.S. plans to blockade two Iranian oil ports on the Persian Gulf.”

Our ships don’t have to DO anything except stop traffic, and that is an act of war. By its very definition, a blockade is an “Act of war whereby one party blocks entry to or departure from an enemy area, often a coast.” (Britannica Concise)

The big question is: before, or after the elections…

I didn't believe that the Bush Administration was stupid enough to invade Iraq.  They seem to be following a similar gameplan now.

Tim, you might want to check out Balloon Juice.  It's a blog run by a former Bush supporter who is disheartened by the direction of his Republican party.  A recent post, Groundhog Day, noted that the noise and conditions leading up to a potential war against Iran seem like deja vu.  Check it out.

Another blog you might be interested is a new one formed by some of Balloon Juice's centrist-lefty commentariot, The Kakistocrats.  Maybe I'll see you there.

Everyone complaining about the dropping oil prices will love it with $6/gallon gas!

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that Bush and pals have their mind completely made up about bombing iran.  No amount of logic can stop them.  Although I can see them trying it before the election, my money is on after the election, but within the next year. Anyone who wants to see the odds on us bombing them can go to the link below.

I hate to see the inevitible tragedy of the Iran war as much as the rest of you, but if you can't stop it you might as well profit.  If you've got any extra cash lying around go ahead and load up on this stock.  It's an oil ETF and should be good for a solid double as soon as the bombs drop.  That goes for you too Dave, you might want to stash away some of your new AAR money, because you're sure going to need it durring the economic shit storm that ensues.

Paul Van Riper showed that a war with Iran will be a disaster for the U.S. military. The war, if one occurs at all, will not be started by the U.S.

Don't always like his conclusions, but I can't argue that they aren't based on reality. He's another "dump Rumsfeld" Retiree, and I respect that. Got a link for him on Iran? I've read some recent remarks on Iraq that got my neck hurting from bobbing up and down in agreement, but haven't seen an Iran analysis.

Without reading a word, I would agree wholeheartedly that military confrontation with Iran would be a disaster, probably agree with his reasoning, and have a bon mot or two of my OWN to throw in.

I am interested in exploring your "The war, if one occurs at all, will not be started by the U.S. " assertion a little deeper, also. What brings you to that conclusion? Who would "start" it? (I think it's already started, but, for purposes of this discussion, I'll put that aside) What will prevent it? Who are the Players?

Better than a few remarks, Van Riper played the role of Iranian "unnamed Middle Eastern" military chief in war games that led to the realization that war with Iran would be a disaster. Iran has the weapons that Van Riper used in the war games.

As Iraq has proved, the people in charge think real opposition will also make it easy on them.

Kudos to a man of integrity.

I agree completely with your first assertion that war with Iran would be disasterous, but have to question your second one.  Since when has logic or planning ever changed the mind of the fools that run our great nation?  When they make up their mind about something they do it no matter what the potential consequences .  We saw that in Iraq and we will see it again in Iran.

Everyone needs to relax and consider this. Remember 1979. The Republicans whine and cried about an "October" surprise by President Carter. At the same time they talked tough in wag the dog fashion, if only you would vote for the tough Republicans, they would never have done that to us. Reagan won't negotiate he'll bomb them into the stone age.
Secretly they held covert "negotiations" and made a deal, (all the while decrying any attempt at negotiation as weakness in the face of an enemy).
The same thing is going to happen again. This time ramming up the call for war and suddenly Iran will back down. 2 deals will take place. First the public one where Bush is presented as the peace maker, after tough negotiations which appear to benefit the West. The second deal will be the secret one. Iran gets a puppet goverment in Iraq and Halliburton and friends share the oil royalties.

"As reports circulate of a sharp debate within the White House over possible US military action against Iran and its nuclear enrichment facilities, The Nation has learned that the Bush Administration and the Pentagon have moved up the deployment of a major "strike group" of ships, including the nuclear aircraft carrier Eisenhower as well as a cruiser, destroyer, frigate, submarine escort and supply ship, to head for the Persian Gulf, just off Iran's western coast. This information follows a report in the current issue of Time magazine, both online and in print, that a group of ships capable of mining harbors has received orders to be ready to sail for the Persian Gulf by October 1."
