Wow! You're not going to believe this story. Republican Congressman Mark Foley has just resigned his seat for sexually harassing young underage boys who worked as pages in Congress.

But it gets worse. Republican leadership knew about it and covered it up for almost a year. It reminds of you of the Catholic priest absuse stories.

This is the Republican Protection Racket at it's best. You steal from the government -- Duke Cunnigham, Bob Ney -- no problem. You launder money -- Tom DeLay -- no problem. You do shady land deals that make you rich because of legislation you passed -- Dennis Hastert -- no problem. You do insider trading -- Bill Frist -- no problem. You sexually harass 16 year old boys working for Congress -- Mark Foley -- no problem.

No matter what you do the Republican Protection Racket has your back. But if you're an average citizen though, then you're on your own. Watch your wallet and watch your kids because these guys are not above anything!

Not that I'm defending this, but to keep it in perspective.

1) The "boy" was 17 and turns this coming Feb.

2) The age of consent is 16 in D.C. so this was legal......I guess....

3) As Ken pointed out, two democrats did the same thing but did not get in trouble for it.

No. Zippy, that is NOT what Ken said. He was still WRONG AGAIN, but that's not what he said.

Ken didn't even allege that nothing happened to Frank, just Studds:

Barney owned up to it, took his just desserts. NO SCANDAL, BOYS!

Gerry E. Studds (Forgive poor Ken's misspelling - he cut and pasted from a Conservative site, and they rarely get ANYTHING right) was Censured on 7/20/1983. He was reelected many more times, serving from 1973 until 1997. He was America's FIRST Openly Gay Congressman.

Studds owned up to it, took his just desserts. NO SCANDAL, BOYS!

The difference?

Foley was a freakin' hypocrite of the worst kind:

In the House, Foley was one of the foremost opponents of child pornography. He resigned on September 29, 2006 when it was revealed he had sent sexually-themed messages to underaged Congressional pages. Foley had served as chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. He introduced a bill in 2002 to outlaw websites featuring sexually suggestive images of preteen children, saying that "these websites are nothing more than a fix for pedophiles."<sup> </sup>In June 2003 he wrote letters to the governor and attorney general of Florida, asking them to review the legality of a program for teenagers of a Lake Como nudist resort in Land O'Lakes, Florida.

Foley's legislation to change federal sex offender laws was supported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, America's Most Wanted host John Walsh, and a number of victims' rights groups. President George W. Bush signed it into law as part of the Adam Walsh Child Safety and Protection Act of 2006.

Foley also succeeded in getting a law passed that allows volunteer youth-serving organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Boys and Girls Clubs to have access to FBI fingerprint background checks to help protect children.

The real fun kicker?

Federal authorities say such messages could result in Foley's prosecution, under some of the same laws he helped to enact.

I can't imagine why he got such a light sentence for the incident with the 13 year old, but to charge him with "attempted sexual assault on a child" when the "child" is 17 is a prime example of the confusion surrounding sex laws. At 17 you can join the military and go kill people for a living, but you're still considered a "child?" You're old enough to drive, but not get hit on? Doesn't make sense to me.

What I got most steamed about in that report was:

"The details of the most recent allegations against Ankeney, who has been living in Highlands Ranch with a girlfriend, have not been released. In an interview, Douglas County Sheriff spokeswoman Kim Castellano said the search warrant, arrest warrant and booking records have been sealed at the request of the investigator because the investigation is ongoing."

What a load of crap! If there's enough evidence to get search and arrest warrants and you announce the arrest to the media, there's enough to let the public in on the details.

This "we refuse to talk about an ongoing investigation" stuff has GOT to STOP. I can understand withholding details that only a "perp" would know, but beyond that either put up or shut up. It is now being used as a political shotgun AND shield, and it ain't right. Makes it awfully convenient for "those in power" to broadly smear someone with no protection for the smeared, yet we have seen examples of others using it as an excuse to not come clean when a question is asked.

Too much secrecy in the Land of the Free....

If he had even the slightest clue about how protective Nudists are about their children, he would be urging their model be held up as an example of how it should be done. Gawd help the molester who gets past the screening process and actually attacks one of these kids. I have grave doubts as to whether the body would ever be found...
