So whenever a person of color decides to step into the mainstream, they are immediately accused of being a traitor to their people. White people crack jokes and often leap on the opportunity to call these fruit/dessert name-callers racist. Obviously, these words are racially charged, however, I think there’s more to this phenomenon then people of color simply being racist against their own people.
I personally don’t have it in me to start tossing around these racial names, along with the fact that it just sounds foolish. However, when I see people on the television like Republican strategist, Leslie Sanchez, mouthing away, I get angry and feel some racial critique is necessary. Although, Leslie is free to her own opinions, I find myself dumbfounded by her remarks that seem to be in complete contradiction to the good of her people. This same dilemma comes up whenever I come into contact so called Hispanic Republicans, as well as African Americans who supported Bush in 2004. Do these people really think the Republican Party serves their best interest?
I don’t know, maybe one’s race/ethnicity shouldn’t necessarily be the umbilical chord to one’s politics, but watching Condi lie through her teeth to Congress just doesn’t seem to do Black people justice…
