From the outside looking in

This is my perspective as a Canadian looking into the American political environment. So please, don't tell me to leave the country or whatever. Please don't tell me to f off. In fact, just spare me. If you want to berate me, write me an angry letter then throw it out. Anyway, here's my opinion, no more no less.

Over the last 2-some years, I've closely observed US politics. I've done this because I find them to be highly entertaining and highly alien. Whereas my country's political spectrum could be found within the entirety of one party in your system - even though it's a four party system.

To give you an example; the recent Ontario provincial election, which I voted in, had two major parties that were vying for control of parliament. One was John Tory's Progressive Conservative party and the other was Dalton McGuinty's Liberal party. The policy differences in this election were so minor that it resulted in the lowest voter turnout since the 1920s. The Tories had budget differences with the Liberals of 1.8% over 4 years and also wanted to help fund more religious schools. Those were two of the major differences. The two leftist parties; the NDP and Green party (which between them carry 30% of the popular vote) wanted things like a $10 minimum wage next year and to shut down all coal-fired plants immediately. The NDP could arguably be called a soft-socialist party. The Liberals instead want a $10 minimum wage in 2010 and to install filtering systems on coal firing plants until they're shut down in 2010. As you can see, the differences are minor.

To look into the American political system is to look into a kaleidoscope. It's baffling and mesmerizing. There's one party, which in Canada would be labeled far-right with members covering the entire spectrum of Canada. The other would be called soft-fascist. To think that views like those of Rudy and Romney are viewed is legitimate is chilling. To think that people support a man who's COMPLETELY destroyed any credibility or love the rest of the world had for America stills carries a quarter of the America population's support is incomprehensible. To think your TV journalists report the things they do the way they do... To think that your radio hosts say the things they do...

I mean this as constructive criticism; so please don't be offended. FIX YOUR SHIT. It's scary. Downright terrifying. That being said, we North of the border will always be your friends, please be ours.

The good part of that is.. its only 1/4 .. the REST of the country.. ( and its a big country) have come to their senses. Its great to hear things from a perspective outside America. We get bombarded with propaganda from every angle every moment of the day. Thats why I watch BBC News America . I learned there are things going on out there that American news outlets don't discuss at all. America came to the brink of something other than a Democracy and pulled back. Now there needs to be so much damage control. I hope the rest of the world hasn't forsaken us. We need their help.

My dad always told me never to talk about religion or politics with people you don't know cause you never know who you're gonna offend. That being said, your country is serious danger - from the inside.

On that note; here my small piece of advice. Tell your friends, tell your co-workers, tell your family WHAT'S GOING ON. Take one of a thousand articles of about your current leadership and post on the memo board. If someone tears it down, drop it on people's desks before work. E-mail friends, acquaintances, and family links and facts. They need to know. Your country is more important than possibly offending people.

You guys can do it. Where there's a will...

It's not 1/4.

Bush is at 39% today on Rasmussen. He has been at 39% to 40% for the past two years.

It hasn't changed contrary to all these random polls that keep coming out saying 24% or whatever. Show me a Gallup poll or something reputable showing him that low.

Here is the gallup poll you wanted to see

Opposition to the Iraq war has reached a record high, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, a development likely to complicate President Bush's efforts to hold together Republican support as the Senate begins debate this week on Pentagon priorities.

Bush's approval rating has reached a new low: 29%.

Rasmussen Reports uses a questionable technique to gather its polling data: interactive voice technology (IVT), in which a computer does the calling and the interviewing. Though Rasmussen himself said that it is "easier to get people to talk to a computer than it used to be," polling units that use IVT have a reputation for low response rates. "It's a far cry from having an interviewer," Belden said. Holland does not let CNN report results from IVT polls. "I find [IVT] polls unreliable,"

Here’s how to understand American politics.

We have one party that wants to redistribute wealth through outright socialism. This party is trying to eliminate freedom of speech on the airwaves, freedom of thought they deem “hateful”, freedom of political speech purchased with campaign contributions, freedom to succeed more than other people, and freedom to keep and bear arms. The opposing party is in business to block the socialist party from enacting additional laws and taking away more freedoms.

Bush’s approval ratings are on the upswing. This is a direct result of the craziness in the Democrat Party. By contrast, approval ratings for Democrats are steadily declining.

See, there is a party in the US who gets votes through fear and intimidation using words and speeches. Their real problem is that their actions have scared the American public much more than their words have. That explains their shrinking support.

If people want to consider  an average approval rating of 34.2% an upswing, let them. Congress' approval rating is low because they have not impeached Bush yet which they will not for political reasons.

Now that sums it up.

"Bush’s approval ratings are on the upswing."

This is hilarious.  Bush's ratings have been lower for longer than anybody in our history.  He recently caught up with Nixon at the time of his resignation, who at the time suffered from the worst image of any president in my lifetime.

Bush's ratings are simply in the shitter.  To spin this positively is like being pleased and proud that as a turd you're no longer sitting on the bottom of the toilet but have now floated to the top.  Either way, you're still in the shitter.   I can always depend on Ken for a laugh.  Thanks Ken.

Ken - what you said isn't true. I've watched debates on both sides. You need to stop confusing party loyality with patriotism. A one party system is never good.

To acroso - the 24% poll you're wondering about was a Reuters-Zogby poll. It's not some "random poll" http://www.reuters.com/

One of the world's three biggest polling organizations, it posted revenue of 2.6 billion USD last year.

Rasmussen and Gallup are dead on. Zogby is the one who is the Democrat Hachet poller. Look as Rassussen's results from 04. Compare that to Zogby who guaranteed a Kerry Victory.

President George W. Bush won the popular vote on November 2 by a 50.7% to 48.2% margin over Senator John Kerry. The final Rasmussen Reports projection had shown the President winning 50.2% to 48.5%.

First ,if you want the truth about American politics...ignore any comments by Republicans or self professed "conservatives". Many are outright liars , hypocrites and serial prevaricators that can't be trusted. Others have radio shows and are convicted drug addicts.

When discussing American politics with these people remember one thing....its all about the money. Every argument they make, directly or indirectly deals with self enrichment. Period.

In that regard we have two parties

One party wants

  1. to redistribute wealth through outright naked greed and by shipping  Americas economic power , its jobs and industry, oversea for the benefit to only the richest of American citizens.  They use the myth of  "free trade" to fro this purpose.
  2. eliminate the government by grossly mismanaging it when in power or simply stealing from it with rampant cronyism and preferential treatment for party members thought "tax cuts" or preferential contracts.
  3. to privatize all aspects of the federal state and local government to create a corporate America for the rich, by the rich and of the rich.
  4. to eliminate all laws that " restrict" business no matter how bad the environmental , social impact and economic impact is to Americans, particularly the lower income groups .They call this being "competitive" ( See the Mortgage Crisis as one example) Biologist call this being predatory.
  5. control all media through giant corporations attuned to their ideology and that pushes their agenda to the exclusion of all others. (See Fox News). Any dissent about this activity is called supporting "censorship"
  6. enjoy the benefits of a free society without the obligations. To this end; a. they talk a lot about freedom while restricting it under the guise of "fighting terrorism" or b.restricting the freedom of Americans who do not have the means to defend themselves or c. glorify military service without ever serving in the military and d. ridicule, insult or threaten those who oppose war for war's sake or oppose committing American lives to grab 130 trillion dollar oil reserves while looking for non existent weapons of mass destruction.
  7. deceive religious Americans into thinking they really care about their social values ( See Larry Craig)
  8. politicize national crises for political gain (See 911)
  9. demonize the poor , sick and helpless by calling them winos, bums and derelicts to justify an ersatz social Darwinism espoused by party members.
  10. Support the unrestricted right to bare arms no matter how many innocent people are killed. They do this to keep the "redneck" voting block , the South, intact.  The Southern memebers of this party will be cast aside once the overall goals of the party are met or until a rich Party memeber and contributor wants to grab some land for a strip mall
  11. kill all kittens and puppies.

If they are sucessfull we will have a nation that can do little more than make war and reward the privileged.

They call this the Republican party and that is their goal.

It wasn't  always like this at one time..BR ( before Reagan) they really did care about freedom and all the things the pay lip service to now. The party has been hijacked by self-serving, greedy ideologues who equate compassion with socialism. restraint for cowardice and dissent with treason.

The opposition party, the Democrats has  afew warts too...but at least they kiss you before they f$%4@k you. They are here to prevent turning America into a series of gated communities for the rich and polluted badlands for everyone else.

 Got it?

One more thing

Bush’s approval ratings are on the upswing. This is a direct result of the craziness in the Democrat Party. By contrast, approval ratings for Democrats are steadily declining.

is spin. Ken has been saying that since Ive know him...even when the Republicans got there ass handed to them in the midterm election. You will note his polls have been bouncing up and down between 27 and 34% for a while...Bush rating can only do one thing...improve.

Spread

Approval

But, keep in mind Bush doesn't run the country by the polls...cant you tell?

Above is the approval rating spread on Junior from a variety of polls (from the link that MRFred posted above). They're obviously all liberal polls (right acroso?) because the overall trend is so stubbornly downward.

Here is a running train-of-thought interpretation of the graph:

January 2001

- Who is this guy?

February 2001 - September 10, 2001

- Wonderful, a party hack who is only interested in undoing everything Clinton accomplished.
- Here we go again, missile defense system, Star Wars lite.
- Cutting taxes. Okay, lower taxes sounds great. What about spending?
- Friggin' stock market. Friggin' tech stocks.
- Enough with the missile defense already, yawn
- Isn't this tendency to appoint industry hacks to regulatory agencies kind of... you know... stupid?

September 11, 2001 - October 2001

- We are all Americans, screw party differences! (aka you go to war with the president you've got).

November 2001 - Jaunuary 2003

- Okay, so he's not FDR, all he can seem to say is "hunt him down, smoke him out, and bring him to justice". Does he have to repeat it so many times though? Oh well, it's the thought that counts.

- Okay, come on let's get going in Afghanistan. Good, careful measured response so far.

- Army is awesome! Thank God for the professionals! Taliban going down, yeah!
- Where's Tora Bora? Fuck, Bin Laden got away. Why did they let the Northern Alliance do the "smoke him out" part instead of the Army? Oh well, shit happens. We'll get him in Pakistan.
- Iraq has nukes? They've been stockpiling sarin? They developed weaponized Anthrax in little RV labs? They've been trying to buy Uranium from Nigeria? Wait, there's no proof he was in on 9/11. What about "you know who" in Pakistan? You don't care about him anymore? WTF? Well, maybe things will get better in the middle east if they take Saddam out. I hope these assholes know what they're doing.

February 2003 - April 2003

- Bummer about the space shuttle...

- Army is fucking awesome! Took down Saddam in a couple of weeks! Thank God for the pros! The people seem happy. Casualties relatively light (if you're not one of the unlucky families). Hey, maybe we got away with it. Fingers crossed, hoping.

April 2003 - November 2003

- Look at Junior with his codpiece pretending to be a naval aviator. Give me a break.
- Can't they stop that looting?
- Where are those WMDs? How can they be North, South, East and West of Tikrit all at the same time, Rummy?
- Why can't they get the water and electricity on? Can't they do something about those IEDs? Stuff your excuses, get better armor to the troops. Where ARE those motherf@cking WMDs!
- You're telling us Saddam wasn't involved in 9/11 after all? But Cheney said... He didn't? Wait... checking... You fucking liars, he did say that.

December 2003

- They got him!? Who Bin Laden? Oh, Saddam Hussein. Okay well, maybe the insurgents who keep blowing up our soldiers and their fellow Iraqis will decide that there's no longer any good reason to keep fighting.

January 2004 - October 2007

- Hold on, what's this about a PDB that said "Bin Laden determined to strike in US"? So much for "nobody could have predicted". Asshole.

- They finally came to the conclusion there were no WMDs about 6 months after everyone else.
- Insurgency is in it's last throws
- Insurgency continues
- Insurgency gets worse
- Zarqawi killed. Maybe things will get better.
- Never mind.
- Still not enough up-armored HUMVs.
- Why would they try to screw with Social Security? Just stop borrowing from it and the money will still be there when people retire, idiots.

- Wait, you mean Kerry, who was in Vietnam in combat on river patrol boats, was wounded and decorated, is a coward, while George W. Bush, who got in the Air Guard by jumping the list and then went AWOL is "strong on terror"? Is the whole world going insane?

- George Junior re-elected. The whole world IS going insane.

- Oh sure, of course, lets outsource port security to the UAE. There was ONLY one hijacker from the UAE on 9/11, right?

- Wow, New Orleans is so screwed. If that hurricane hits them square it could flood the whole city. Damn. Bad time for the 256th National Guard to be away in Iraq with all their gear. Aren't those the guys the governor usually uses for this kind of thing? How long can it take to get a couple of thousand soldiers to New Orleans? I'm glad it wasn't an invasion. Heck-of-a-job Brownie. Maybe not such a heck-of-a-job. Wow, the press is in New Orleans and the whitehouse is really starting to look like a bunch of assholes asleep at the wheel. That's got them going (finally). Bush makes his second speech in the rubble of a demolished area, this time in New Orleans. Yawn.

- Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson. Hmmm. Lucky dude, pretty hot looking CIA agent if you ask me. Assholes outed her because he criticised them. I can no longer be surprised by these people.

- "The decider", yeah, right, would someone please take this annoying fucking kid to the park?

- China is a BIG country.  Yep. Uh-huh.  Baby sitter! What did I tell you about leaving him alone!
- Alberto Gonzales hired and fired US attorneys based on their politics? Oh, what a surprise.
- Iran? Cheney. Must. Be. Stopped. "Luke, I am your father..." noooooooooooooooooooo!

- all work and no play make jack a dull boy. all work and no play make jack a dull boy. all work and no play make jack a dull boy. all work and no play make jack a dull boy. all work and no play make jack a dull boy.

“When discussing American politics with these people remember one thing....its all about the money. Every argument they make, directly or indirectly deals with self enrichment. Period.”
Republicans really are all about the money. However, you’re missing a very important point. We want a strong economy for all Americans, because when Fred is doing well financially, then Ken can sell more stuff to Fred.
A common mistake of liberals is the belief that the American economy is a zero sum game, and there are only winners and losers. When the economy is rip-roaring good, then we can all have a better life.

Republicans are all about a healthy, vibrant economy. So some people make more money than other people? Well, that’s life. Each of us is given an average of 72 years of life, and in America, each of us is given the opportunity to work hard and make a better life for ourselves.

If we taxed the hell out of inheritance, then we could move everyone to roughly the same starting line. I am one of a few Republicans who agrees with inheritance tax, because I hate trust fund recipients. I admire self-made millionaires, not people who inherit wealth.

“Redistribute wealth through outright naked greed and by shipping America’s economic power, its jobs and industry, oversea for the benefit to only the richest of American citizens.”
It’s true that we no longer manufacture welcome mats and coat hangars in America. In fact, if you walk around Wal-Mart and look at the labels, you’ll see that all of that crap comes from Asia.

On the other hand: Apple makes iPods, Microsoft makes Windows Vista, Intel makes chips, Pfizer makes Viagra, Harley-Davidson makes motorcycles, DreamWorks makes movies, Google makes (whatever it is that they make?)

America companies make innovative products that the world wants. Do these companies always manufacture all of their products in North America? No. But Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes Benz are creating manufacturing jobs in America. It’s called globalization, and there is nothing we can do about it but play the game to our advantage.

“justify an ersatz social Darwinism”
When America was young, society valued men with strong backs to lift that barge, tote that bale, pick that cotton, lasso that steer, fell that redwood.

The only place for physical prowess in today’s society is in the NFL, NBA, or USMC.

Now society values people with brains who can create economic wealth through innovation. American universities are full of the best and brightest foreign students from all over the world. They stay here after graduation to become American citizens and contribute to a better society.

What about Americans with strong backs and small brains? We certainly don’t need to promote expansion of this population through Great Society programs that reward prolific breeding. This is not ersatz social Darwinism. It’s blatant and honest and logical social Darwinism.

“Glorify military service without ever serving in the military.”
We want to do more than glorify military service. We want to make it a profitable career. Special Forces should be earning $150,000/year with great benefits. We should make a military career so attractive, that the competition for open slots is intense. This is the place for the guys with the strong backs.

There is a reason that military personnel vote overwhelmingly Republican. They know who takes care of them.

The reason I say this is because I've seen a very sharp change in the way people from outside of North America view The US. Being from Canada and visiting the states all the time. Talking to Americans on the internet, tourists, etc. I KNOW Americans are good people. I know you're smart, compassionate people.

So when people on the internet or tourists bash the States, I'm always there to defend it cause I know better. They'll say shit you wouldn't believe. Stuff they'd never say before 2003. The environment is so different. In fact, it touched my family personally. On March 18, 2003, my mom was in Peurto Valerta Mexico for vacation. A man approached her and said "Fuck Americans" and punched her in the face and kicked her into unconsciousness on the ground. She was in hospital for a week afterwards. This was because of the outbreak of the Iraq war. The man who did it never knew my mom was Canadian and that we didn't go to Iraq.

That's what you all need to understand, you've gone from being the good guys to the bad guys in the eyes of so many. And it's getting harder to have your backs by the day. So please, please, do what you can to save your country. Do it NOW.

Really I chuckled out loud.

Ken proclaims Shrub's numbers are going up, and naturally I was curious and he provided a link to "prove it" So I look and there it is in Red and Yellow and Black.......The polls Ken is so proud of!

I must say, to boast about&nb sp;these numbers shows just how desperate the Cons have become. The polls show that "The Decider" is currently at combined 34.2% approval rating.

Really think about what that is saying about the Cons. THEY ARE BRAGGING ABOUT 34.2% APPROVAL RATINGS!

I am truly astonished that anyone would post something in such an audacious manner.

Wow, that means only 2/3rds if the country think the guy is a fuck up.

Well I can certainly see why Ken would be proud of numbers like that.

Why, if certain tardusering allies of Ken's  on this board could get approval ratings like that he would be just plum proud as a peacock, instead of just being a dick.
