You could put Jesus Christ in Nomex, have archangel Gabriel doing air drops, and have the whole heavenly host on engines and bulldozers - ain't NUTHIN' gonna stop those fires while the Santa Ana winds are smokin'.
My husband and I work for the Forest Service. He still fights wildfire but I'm out of it now. When the Santa Ana winds are howling, it wouldn't matter how many National Guard or USFS firefighters were out there. All they could do is get burned up until the wind shifts.
A lot of the fault here lies with the homeowners of So. Cal. They LOVE building in the trees, having all that attractive Mesquite around their house, or having that lovely view from their house at the top of a draw. Trees burn, the sap of mesquite is quite literally as combustive as kerosene and draws funnel wind and fire like a chimney. It's as dumb as building in a floodplain and then wondering why their house floats away every so often.
Western fires will only get worse with global warming. People need to build more sensibly. There are just some locations that are not safe to build unless you clear all the vegetation for hundreds of feet around your house.
I do agree with the caller from Belgium who said it's not about whether the Guard could fight the fire, the Guard is needed for getting people out, crowd control, moving supplies and all the logistical things that need to be done in an emergency.
