I don't know if i count but my husband is active duty USAF.  He has served in Iraq, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.  He has a lot of medals, I don't have any idea how many, but it is several rows.  He just made NCO of the quarter and Ssgt. of the month.  He has always said when we leave they will slaughter each other.  That is the only reason he thinks we should not leave.

by kdelarosa22 on 10/03/2007 10:36:36 AM EST

They are going to continue to slaughter each other. But the Shiites have the overwhelming advantage of having the cops and government on their side.

"Oh yes, there will be blood."

That's awesome! The spouses and family members of the military understand and share the sacrifice that other civilians can only speculate.  Please more posts.

by bluefella on 10/03/2007 11:10:05 AM EST

I do know he retired in (I believe) 2004, as a Master Sergeant of the Air Force. We used to hang out sometimes at the Great Lakes base, makes me hungry for Taco Bell...

He was Navy and then Air Force. From what I've been told and read, he was in Vietnam, but I don't know when exactly. I do know for sure he was in Zimbabwe, Honduras, and Panama. (He brought back souvenirs I still have like a wooden Honduran change box)

He told me he was medical staff, or something like that. (I'm not that well-informed on jargon as you can tell)

But about sharing the sacrifice, I gotta say, it was weird having him gone on what seemed like random trips to different countries and he never let us go with.

One of the coolest things, though, is his insight into war and peace. He isn't totally anti-war or pro-war, he just wants me to do what's best for the country and to always respect and honor the soldiers that defend this country, and so I try to.

Cynicism is poison to reform and pumps life into the status quo.

I'm a vet of the USAF, '97-'01, served as F-16 Weapons Specialist in 421st (Utah) and 510th (Italy) Fighter Squadrons. Deployed to Saudi Arabia twice and Kuwait once, in between participated in Kosovo campaign, loaded lots of bombs, serviced lots of aircraft. Oddly enough I got out approx. one month before the 9/11 attacks, went to the recruiter a few days after, and he told me the USAF didn't need me back. So, hindsight being 20/20 and all, I'm glad he said that, because I'm very thankful not to be enlisted presently.

Hey all you Veterans out there, a sincere thank you for your service to our country.  I live by the Los Angeles Veterans Cemetery and drive by all those stark white gravestones as far as the eyes can see, homeless veterans with signs asking for help right outside the cemetary gates.

  "Support Our Troops".  Right?

What rank Hypochrasy.  It just breaks my heart to see these guys.  Most of them look like you and me, not like the typical homeless you see around these parts.  I have a strong unsettling fear that within 10-20 years we will all see scenes like this everywhere.  I myself have never served (flat feet, athsma, 135 lbs, etc)  + I dont know anybody who has served so I have no knowledge of your community.

I want to do something to help.  Please take into consideration that I have started a career change which has me back in school, i'm getting married in 3 months and starting a family, and my finances are limited.  I think though that I can sacrifice some time here and there and some cash.  What is the most effective way that I can do something to help these troops out?  The Vet Center around the corner has a nice garden that they sell plants from at the farmers market they hold there, i was thinking about offering to help there once a week or something.  Any of you know what the best most effective aid org is for vets - to donate to? I would really appreciate the advice.  Who knows, maybe some of you Angelenos might join me??

Thanks for your time-keep on Turkin,

Sean

The USO is a great organization.  They give magazines and phone cards (at the airport) to soldiers on their way downrange.
You may be able to adopt a soldier.  Then you can send care packages to people whose families cannot afford to send anything. My son's boy scout troop adopted my husband's flight to earn a badge.
And, of course, be vocal.  You may need to be the voice for someone who doesn't feel comfortable advocating.

USAF (retired).  1979-2002.  Korea, Germany, Saudi.  Special intelligence, airborne electronic combat on the RDF.  Deployed twice while based out of Arizona.  Earned a commission in '92.  Combat comm modeling & simulation after that.  Retired in '02.  Now I'm a slimy defense contractor.

Was a soldier 1966 to 74, classmate of Wes's dad. I enjoyed your show on XM driving to work, I now miss it, trying to figure out the ipod option. As to the primaries, I like Hillary not only because she is smart, but careful. I like Obama too, maybe a few more years, but each so much smarter than Bush and wiser than Cheney any comparison silly.

US Army, 1973-1997, intelligence and joint planning specialties, was stationed pretty much all over the states, did two tours in Europe, one in Korea (met my husband there, also career military), spent some time in Japan working arms control verification, provided direct support to first Gulf War and prep for Kosovo but was not deployed in theater.

Who lies about others' service to "score points"

Yes. Twba served in the military. And you impugned his service and character. SO TELL US ABOUT YOUR MILITARY SERVICE! And this better be damned good. If you didn’t win a *Congressional Medal of Honor*, you should shut your fucking pie hole forever. by KenTX on 03/28/2009 06:24:35 AM EST

And who disparages real vets, to score more "points."

"Some people are smarter than others. I know a guy who enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War to avoid being shot at and put in a tiger cage by the Cong. He figured out that the work was so easy and the benefits were so cushy, that he made a career out of it." by Hugh Everett on 09/25/2010 09:22:55 PM EST

I am neither, I agree with most of Cenk political arguments and none of his social arguments and I would never join the military because i have no desire to kill civilians to help corporations give higher returns to their share holders and spread American imperialism.
