Military

This is conjunction with my previous blog post on war.

“To provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions”

Article 1 Section 8 of the United States Constitution

The Military

In the previous chapter I described why we should declare war and how it should be fought.  In this chapter I wish to discuss how we should organize our military to provide for our defense.  I’m a firm believer in a strong military, but not necessarily a standing Army.

Our defense budget has skyrocketed since World War II.  Initially after the war we had to maintain a strong standing army to maintain the peace in Europe and Asia while they rebuilt their countries.  As the rebuilding was going on we immediately began what we’ve called the “Cold War” between ourselves and the former Soviet Union.  At the end of World War II our leadership decided to anticipate where we might eventually enter into a military conflict and determined that the gravest threat came from the Soviets.  The reasoning for this was understandable.  We had just fought two major world wars in a very short period of time.  The casualty rates for ourselves and those involved on both sides of the conflicts were massive.  We were drawn into both of these wars after they began.  To prevent this type of situation ever arising again, our leadership developed the United Nations and designed a policy to anticipate where the next conflict might take place.

President Truman began the “Cold War” with his speech in Greece in 1948.  At the time the Soviets, while maintaining a large standing Army in Eastern Europe were really financially destroyed.  Unlike the United States, the Soviet Union had been directly invaded and many of their cities had been destroyed by the German Army.  As they were beginning to rebuild after the war the American Government realized that the Soviets were the only real threat to our “Pax Americana” (their words, not mine).    Because of this Truman gave his speech.

During the Cold War we and the Soviets established military bases all around the world in countries we deemed to be “friendly” or “strategic” to us.  It didn’t matter to us, or the Soviets, if those countries wanted our military bases on their land or not, because our strategic concerns were of more importance.  This led to many countries resenting our military presence in their country.  It would be no different than if the Chinese decided to build a military base outside Washington D.C based upon their strategic concerns.  We would be up in arms attempting to remove that base even if our government agreed with the Chinese.

Once the Cold War ended we maintained these bases around the world even though there was no military threat to us.  The resentment grew because people in countries around the world couldn’t understand why we would maintain these military bases in their countries when there was no threat.  Even in the United States there were those who were fighting to close these bases and reduce our military budget.

In the 1990’s the Project for a New American Century (called PNAC) was developed to anticipate where our next threat would materialize.  It was an attempt by the Military to anticipate what would be needed to maintain our standing in the world as the last remaining super power, and to ensure that no other country ever attained super power status.  In other words, in my opinion, this was an attempt at creating and maintaining an American Empire much along the lines of the Romans.  This philosophy by PNAC is destined to fail because the American system of Government is not capable of becoming an Empire without first changing our Constitutional form of government.  As you can see, over the past 7 years this has been happening but the American people have been fighting against it.  We understand something’s wrong, we just don’t know what it is.  In our gut we have a basic understanding of what the United States SHOULD be and become disturbed when our government attempts to do things in violation of what we have determined our role in the world should be.  That is why in poll after poll the American people have continually said the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Our political leaders don’t comprehend what we the people are attempting to say to them because we ourselves don’t quite understand what it is that is wrong.

In a post I made on a website a while back I stated, our military should be used for our defense.  Our soldiers should be protecting OUR borders.  Our air force should be protecting OUR skies.  Our navy should be protecting OUR coastlines.  We have no business putting our sons and daughters in military bases all over the world because all that is, is diplomacy by military fiat.  Our diplomats should be used for diplomacy and our military for our defense.  That is why I propose the following.

My vision of the American military is to have our military protecting our borders.  There is no other reason to have a military other than for our defense against invasion or insurrection.  To defend our country our military does not need to be in any other country in the world.  I believe that we should reorganize our military to again become what our founding fathers intended it to be, militia’s of the various states.  I believe that every person over the age of 18 who wishes to exercise their right to bare arms should be trained in the art of defense for our country.  This way, if we are invaded all these people would be capable of picking up a gun and defending our country.

Those who proclaim to the highest hills that the 2nd Amendment is sacrosanct don’t comprehend the meaning behind the 2nd Amendment.  If you believe in a standing Army then you have given up your right to bare arms to that Army.  You, yourself have given up your 2nd Amendment rights.  Originally the Amendment began with words to the effect that in order to ensure there is no standing army…. Then it went on to describe the Amendment as it is stated in the Constitution.  Those who wish to exercise their right to bare arms must do so as a “well regulated militia.”  This does not mean that you join an organization such as the Michigan Militia or other paramilitary group, because their only interests are the interests of the founders and leaders of that organization.  Those who choose to exercise the right to bear arms are the protectors of our communities and society as a whole rather than a standing army.  That group of people must be trained on an annual basis to ensure they can fight as a cohesive unit.  This is done through our State and Local governments not some paramilitary organization because you are fighting for the people.

I’ll get more into this in later chapters especially when I talk about crime although I will make one more point on this issue.  Those who simply wish to exercise their right to bare arms to hunt should have that right, but they also become part of the militia due to their exercising the right to bare arms.  A gun is not a toy its sole purpose is to kill something or someone.  We the people have every right to require that those who utilize firearms for whatever purpose to be trained and act responsibly.  Now there are those who say the 2nd Amendment says something that it does not say, that they have the right to have whatever weapons the military has.  This is not true.  According to our Constitution the Military itself as a standing army is not suppose to exist.  All those weapons the military has, as John Adams stated, can be stored in magazines (warehouses) until needed.  As I said before I’ll get into this more in a later chapter.

Now how do we do this?

First of all, we would still maintain a small standing army to patrol our borders.  Each state would determine what type of units they would like to include in a military if such military is necessary to be called up to duty.  A listing of all units that would be necessary would be given to all the states so that the states may choose what types of units to train in their various states.  For example, a coastal state may determine that they would prefer a naval unit.  The state would then cause all individuals over the age of 18 who wish to join the National Guard to be trained as sailors.  Additionally, each state would include in training all those who wish to exercise their right to bare arms.  The difference between the two groups of people would be that the National Guard would train as they do now and be on active duty one year in every 4, those who exercise their right to bare arms would not be on active duty except during a two week training period once every year.  We would still have a national military budget to provide the funding necessary for training and equipment, but it would be up to a central committee of military personnel, congressional leaders, and state representatives, to determine how the money would be spent.

The Army that patrols our borders would be taken from the various states during their year long on duty term.   The same would be true with the Navy and the Air Force for our coastlines, ports, and skies.

Secondly, I see the development of Special Forces types of units to be used in those cases where we must send in forces to either remove or arrest foreign nationals, such as in Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden.  These units can only be used with the advice and consent of Congress.

Third, we will have to maintain a strategic missile capability.  Therefore, it will be necessary to have those individual’s who are specialized in this capacity to be on duty at all times.

Forth, to maintain our standing in the world as a super power, we will have to maintain a research and development capability regarding our military.  This should be handled again by a committee established by congress to make recommendations as to what types of military equipment and weapons should be researched and developed.

Fifth, we will still need a high caliber officer core so we will still have to maintain our military academies only their five years of service after graduating from the academy would be spent primarily in a National Guard type unit unless they are part of the Special Forces unit or strategic missile unit.

Sixth, since we need to protect ourselves from those who would wish us harm we should have our military personnel maintaining our ports of entry.  By doing this we would be stopping any corporation or outside country from providing our port services.  This only makes sense.  It is our safety that is of paramount concern.  No company and no other country could ever be as concerned about the safety of the American people as our own people.

In the case of invasion or insurrection, our standing military (National Guard) will be our first line of defense, however, our real defense will be all those people who have been trained and are simply standing by waiting to be called up by our Congress.  This is what our Constitution requires.  Having a standing army the way we have it now only leads to one thing and that is its use.  There will always be those who will take advantage of a standing army in the manner in which we have established it to begin wars which we the people disagree with.  They will use whatever means they must use to justify their actions but if they do not have the access to the military, they cannot do that.

We have tied our economy into our military creating a military industrialized complex that is getting out of control.  Unless we reign it in it will lead to our destruction.

By closing our military bases overseas and utilizing our military for our own defense we can reduce the military budget by one half without affecting our safety or security.  In addition, we would actually become more secure because our soldiers would be on our borders, our coastlines, our ports, and our air ways.

Now the question becomes, what about terrorism?  How do we fight this war against terrorism if we bring our soldiers home?  The answer is threefold.

First, we maintain our security through our ports of entry, our borders, our coastlines, and our air ways.  That’s what I’ve described above.

Second, we maintain a high quality single foreign intelligence group, such as the CIA, to infiltrate those foreign organizations that we have determined poses a threat to us.

Third, we utilize our diplomatic core and Special Forces to take out those leaders who are attempting to attack our country.

By removing our military bases from foreign soil we will in effect be removing the greatest reason peoples around the world want to attack us.  Additionally, we work with those countries where terrorist groups operate to destroy those groups from the top and bottom.  If people don’t want to join terrorist organizations, then there will be no terrorist organizations.  We must determine why people join such groups and do everything in our power to remove that reason.  We then must take down the leaders because they are lost and cannot be changed.  Whether we do that by killing them or imprisoning them, it doesn’t matter.

The war on terrorism must fought from both directions.  Those who join and those who lead.  When we invade other countries unjustly we increase the numbers of people who are willing to join terrorist organizations.  If, on the other hand, we help the people in those countries by giving them hope, we remove the capacity of the terrorist organization to recruit.
