Despite Bushes rhetoric , the Taliban and al Queda, once driven out by our invasion in 2001, now control "vast
swaths of unchallenged territory, including rural areas, some district centers, and important road arteries" the Senlis Council, stated in a report released yesterday.
"It is a sad indictment of the current state of Afghanistan that the question now appears to be not if the Taliban will return to Kabul, but when ... and in what form. The oft-stated aim of reaching the city in 2008 appears more viable than ever and it is incumbent upon the international community to implement a new strategic paradigm before time runs out."
Its clear that Bush and his Iraq policy is conceding Afghanistan to al Queda and the Taliban through indifference and incompetence. While we pour billions into Iraq , Bush and the Republicans are ignoring the bad news from the main battle front in the War on Terror. We in essence are handing over the country that once housed al Queda and provided a stronghold from which the 9-11 attack was executed. With Pakistan in turmoil, Afghanistan would provide again an ideal adjunct base of operations against Musharraf and obtaining Pakistan's nuclear weapons.
Where is the conservative outrage at this? I guess there are insufficient oil reserves in Afganistan to "fuel" outrage.
