The Muslim World, the US and the West - by Dogan Uygur

Today is February 10, 2007 Saturday 4 PM EST. I am watching Fox Cable News.
Program:  Radical Islam in their Own Words, an hour long documentary style political show.
I am terrified and very saddened. Here is why:

1. Muslim world is becoming radicalized at an alarming rate.
2. Non-radical level headed Muslims are keeping it quiet.
a. They are really afraid of their community wrath.  If they speak the truth they will be killed or ostracized.
b. Even though they are not advocating violence like Osama & followers, they truly believe the rhetoric of radical  Islam.
3. We the western world, are doing everything possible to justify their outlandish  claims about Israel and American  government.
a. We allowed Israel to take best part of Palestinians territory by force.
b.  We allowed millions of Arabs to be forced out of their homeland into refugee camps. c. We allowed Israel to occupy and build settlements in West Bank and Gaza   strips since 1967.
d. We allowed Israel to humiliate all Arabs and Muslims in last sixty years by supporting Israel with money, technology and weapons.
e. After First World War, British, France, USA occupied and continuously manipulated Middle East and North Africa for their material gains. f. Even though no Christian person will admit openly, almost 80% of Christians think that they are more human, modern and intellectually developed than most Non-Christian people. This line of thinking reflects in their dealing with Muslim population. This is creating enormous amount of resentment. g. We never approached the world politics in an even-handed, just and impartial way. All western nations maneuvering is to take advantage of poor countries. West is always taking sides on the European and Christian basis. h. Keeping a large contingent of armed forces in Saudi Arabia , invading Iraq without any reason by US created a huge resentment and animosity in the whole Muslim world. i. Not only Osama and Co., but whole Muslim world is screaming, complaining about American policies in Middle East. Our answer to this grievances is very simple; they do no like our freedom and democracy. Why don't we ask Karen Hughes, Condoleezza Rice what they hear from our closest Muslim allies?

4. It is very difficult for western world to accept that the rules of game have changed completely:
a. Now through internet and world wide TV coverage there is no secret anymore. Everybody is seeing instantaneously. Emperor W. does not have clothes, old deception, lies and blames do not work anymore.
b. Superior war machine, tons of money is not enough to solve insurgency, suicide bombers and terrorist in our midst. There is all together a new kind of war that usual rules are not applicable.
c. A greater immigration from Muslim countries to Europe and US makes it  very difficult to control and prevent hostile activities of Muslim population.

5. We have four thousand universities, hundreds of think tanks, thousands of media outlets. Why can't we open the forum for realistic and logical discussion: How to deal with radical Islam?  Instead of continuously stoking the fire of fear with inflammatory accusations and empty threats.

6. Our new strategies have to be based on the following principals:
a. Western countries have to stop playing game and adopt real honest politics.
b. United Nations has to be improved and developed into a real mediator and bipartisan helper.
c. West has to militarily disengage from Muslim countries. Immediately leave Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Improve and leave Afghanistan ASAP.
d. We have to affirm and declare secularism. First we have to separate church and state, not only in words, also in reality.
e. We have to develop a universal education, curriculum based on human values, freedom, logic and science. Through the UN this education system has to be adopted and translated into many languages. Nobody should be forced to utilize it, but it should be available to every one free of charge. f. We have to negotiate with all adversaries no matter how wrong headed they might be. Creating a peaceful and just world will be a long arduous work. We have to get stated ASAP.

 1. I suppose when you have a majority of the world's population believing in a specific religion, it appears as though they are in greater numbers being "radicalized" as opposed to other "religions" which concurrently radicalize themselves.  Maybe, the Muslims just have a much better system for getting others to follow them blindly (sic).  I don't suppose you care much for the tele-vagelicals on TV which, talk about God in once sentence, and then Protein-shakes and a healthy lifestyle in the next.  I have the luxury of changing the channel and locking out the network through the TV+ chip in my televesion set.  The Pakistani and Saudi Arabian Madrasa's are churning out a breed of Muslim specifically for indoctrinating their religion beneficial to their means.  Heck, even in Turkey I have seen "Dergaha's" which congregate on Saturday's to talk about religion.  Right beside the doors of Istanbul University, where the "liberal" faction of the population go to classes.
  1. This actually has to do with "culture" rather than religion.  While they are all Muslims, they are still culturally and geographically divided.  I don't hear much about the Albanian community being "radicalized" in the Balkans.  It is not the "quiet" ones.  Maybe they are more "privileged", where rocking the gravy boat will actually hinder their prospects and current lifestyle, realistically we are still human afterall.  I am quite certain, the "radicalized" Muslims you mention reside in third world countries, usually prohibited trade with many other nations, or sometimes involved in national trade agreements which are detremental to their own benefit.
  2. I think you, actually provided points of accuracy for my rebuttal. What actually are you trying to prove by pointing out we (read: Westerners) have been meddling in the region for the past 90 years?  Do you suppose maybe, they don't enjoy living in quartered areas?  Their tribal system maybe be perceived as arcane and horrendiously disimilar to our lifestyle however, it is what they prefer and like.  Democracy for them could be an option, but why force it on them?  Naturally, if Democracy was as superior as some claim, (don't think I'm knocking its merits and advantages), it would be accepted unanimously worldwide.  Westernerner's probably would not even have to "give" it, it would be stolen in the middle of the night.
  3. Rules have not changed, nothing has.  The population now have other avenues to see things.  Regarding to European population deficiency, being in a society where one can be more promiscuious well into your thirties and not have any offspring.  Not having to burden oneself with the "future", but rather with the present is a grave error not to mention very selfish :P
  4. Engagement.  What the westerner's really lack is diplomacy.  A figure who will commit to them for mutual benefit.  Ambassador's with real knowledge and intent to show the greater cause of their relationship with their nation.  Why appoint puppets to sit at the podium and consolutes when "they" already disbelieve them from the get-go.
  5. Where will all the reconstruction money go?  The Carlyle group and Halliburton have quarterly earning reports to meet.  Don't you get it?

Of course these are my opinions, I may be wrong.
