I'm from Louisiana and I can tell you what a fishing rodeo is. It's basically a competition where fishermen gather in one area (usually for a day) and go out and try to catch the largest fish. They usually give out prizes for the largest fish overall, or the largest fish in various categories, and often for the first fish caught. The prizes are usually provided by some local business or group of businesses acting as sponsors in return for the publicity it brings. Kind of like a bass competition but usually not limited to one kind of fish.
It's a big tradition here because Louisiana has a very wide variety of fish habitats. It's a great place for people who love fishing. If you're picturing a bunch of pickup trucks and beer drinkers, well, yes, there's a lot of truth to that, it does attract a lot of good-ol-boy types, but in general it's just regarded as a fun harmless picnic sort of thing. I've never heard of one where hookers participated (maybe as prizes?) but I'm willing to keep an open mind if I get the chance.
