Bring back the 1960's LOUD Obnoxious Feminist Protestors!!!

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
I was growing up in the 1960's and 1970's when the media loved to cover the emerging women's movement. Now "NOW" wants to give college women a fat PEAR shape (years before kids & hormonal changes)!!!! But they say LITTLE on the MAJOR and DEADLY oppression of women...One scholar tells what happened to SIDETRACK many feminists!!!

And the media lovedto cover the protestors who were burning "oppressive" women's undergarments.

But REAL PROGRESS was made.  The powerful 19th and early 20th century women's movement was revived, (in part--) and after all the noise, women's opportunities (tho still not the same) HAVE improved--somewhat

The MAIN power women need is of course the chance to earn as much money as similarly trained/educated men.  This lack of the ability to support both oneself and one's dependents...drives lots of other self and other-destructive choices in some women.

And there is still lots of crime against women, girls specifically (with stats that  make it the BIGGEST "hate" crime of all) but at least some better laws were put in place.

BUT NOW WOMEN'S GROUPS are less loud and MOST DO NOT ADDRESS THE WORLDWIDE HORRORS SOME WOMEN SUFFER ...and I wondered WHY  (as I remembered the LOUD protests of the 1960's feminists???)

This woman writes a COMPELLING piece to show how  and WHY many women's studies scholars and many of the womens groups are NOW sidetracked from the key issues of women's chance at equal earnings AND safety from personal attacks...

...And the most ABSURD thing is NOW's latest college compaign, (I kid you not!) to persuade college women to eat a lot and become PEAR SHAPED!  Read the link & see!

http://www.weeklystandard.c om/Content/Public/Articles/ 000/000/013/641szkys.asp?pg =2

This woman gives MANY examples, names names and incidents to SHOW why many American feminist organizations and scholars are SO WEAK and SO BAD at helping Islamic women who are suffering and even DYING at the hands of those Islamic men who choose to beat them, disfigure them, even murder them.

But what is the best known American womens' organization NOW doing today?   They want to encourage college women to eat a lot & start looking like PEARS!!!

"...NOW has just launched a 2007 "Love Your Body" calendar as part of its ongoing initiative of the same name. The body calendar warns of an increase in eating disorders and includes a photograph celebrating the shape of pears..."  The article further mentions NOW encourages college women to get together & eat a lot (moving them from trim to tubby..!).  Guess health issues don't matter...to NOW.

I have a feeling few men on this site will rush out to buy THAT calendar.  (College women morphed into the middle aged woman's post kid post menopause look???)

Just leave the patchouli oil at home!

Also, I'd rather look at peared shaped bodies paired with cute faces than skinny, sickly, sucked up, collar bone exposing, Nicole Ritchies that look like they just rose from the dead...

It's stupid reactionism.  It'll pass.

Health is the primary concern, not what you look like.  Apparently this point has escaped both NOW and what passes for feminists these days.

NOW's Priority Issues

Constitutional Equality Amendment: Equality in pay, job opportunities, political structure, social security and education will remain an elusive dream without a guarantee of equality in the U.S. Constitution. The progress we have made—and must continue to make—towards women's equality can be lost at any time because those advances depend on legislation that can be (and has been) weakened or repealed by Congress. Although we did not succeed in ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, winning a constitutional guarantee of equality for women remains one of NOW's top priorities.

Reproductive Rights: NOW affirms that reproductive rights are issues of life and death for women, not mere matters of choice. NOW fully supports access to safe and legal abortion, to effective birth control and emergency contraception, to reproductive health services and education for all women. We oppose attempts to restrict these rights through legislation, regulation or Constitutional amendment.

Racism: NOW condemns the racism that inflicts a double burden of race and sex discrimination on women of color. Seeing human rights as indivisible, we are committed to identifying and fighting against those barriers to equality and justice that are imposed by racism. A leader in the struggle for civil rights since its inception in 1966, NOW is committed to diversifying our movement, and we continue to fight for equal opportunities for women of color in all areas including employment, education and reproductive rights.

Lesbian Rights: NOW is committed to fighting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in all areas, including employment, housing, public accommodations, health services, child custody and military policies. NOW is committed to educational efforts that combat the adverse effects of homophobia, promote positive images in the media and ultimately ensure civil rights protection for all. NOW asserts the right of lesbians to live their lives with dignity and security, and the rights of equal marriage for all.

Violence Against Women: NOW is unique in its approach to the issue of violence against women, emphasizing that there are many interrelated aspects to the issue—domestic violence; sexual assault; sexual harassment; violence at abortion clinics; hate crimes across lines of gender, sexuality and race; the gender bias in our judicial system that further victimizes survivors of violence; and the violence of poverty emphasized by the radical right's attacks on poor women and children—all of which result from society's attitudes toward women and efforts to "keep women in their place."

Economic Justice: NOW advocates for wide range of economic justice issues affecting women, from the glass ceiling to the sticky floor of poverty. These include welfare reform, livable wages, job discrimination, pay equity, housing, social security and pension reform, and much more.
