Put Up or Shut Up

Now is the time for all Young Turk fans to become paid members.

Last week I wrote a tongue-in-cheek entry about not missing Ben too much as long as Junior (aka Wes Clark Jr.) was filling in. Little did I know that at that very moment Ben was negotiated a golden parachute contract, as he prepared to jump from the airship known as The Yound Turks. (God Bless)

So now it is time for those of us, who know that there is no other news program that provides the facts & analysis in an entertaining  and listenable format as does TYT, to take action.  Although there is no way TYT can compensate Cenk and future hosts in a competitive way, a little more cash might certainly help. Obviously Cenk is not starving to death, but there is no way that some bright tv executive will not figure out that he stands head and shoulders above the bozos that masquerade as news jockeys. When that happens, they will dangle a wad of cash in front of him that will dwarf what he is now earning.

Unlike Cenk, Junior is married with children. While Cenk can survive on beer and chips, Junior has to live like a grownup and shoulder real responsibilities.

So what can we the TYT community do to keep Cenk and offer Junior a salary that he can reasonably hope to support a family with? We need to think of TYT as shareware. Most of us (myself included) have sampled the product and enjoyed the free ride. For those of us who value it, the free ride is over. I intend to join this week. (Please don't whine about how little you earn, my main job pays me $10 per hour) If you are a freeloader like myself, it is time to pony up.

Not only that, we must spread the word like Paul Revere. Be a patriot and tell your friends and neighbors that "the Turks are here, the Turks are here" Everyone that I have convinced to listen has immediately appreciated this unique show.

We know that Fox Noise is not going to pack it in. It is up to us to keep the Turks as an antidote. We have our marching orders, so let's get to work!

[update] I have now put up -I paid my first month's $10,what a bargain !

  • Cheaper and more informative than a month of the Washington Post (and I live in metro DC)
  • Cheaper and wakes me up better than a daily cup or coffee (without the intestinal after effects)
  • Cheaper and more entertaining than cable (with apologies to John Stewart and my man crush, Steven Colbert)

Now that I have put up I do not have to shut up.

I wil email my friends with a late night TV type of proposal. Listen for one month for free, no obligations. Then decide if TYT is not the best, most entertaining news source available. If the answer is yes, than it is time for you to fork over $10 a month.

Last but not least, I want to offically begin a Draft Junior movement. I want some of my $10 each month to go towards Wes Clark Jr.'s salary as cohost of TYT. I will right another post to push for a Draft Junior movement. I you agree than let your voice be heard.

...I also think we need to start emailing MSNBC about putting the Turks in Imus' old spot.  That'd be awesome.  Also, when you watch a TYT video on the Youtube, rate it 5 stars and leave a comment, it generates more buzz, more quickly.  Turks Nation!!!!

I love these efforts and suggestions. Just so you know, you guys are pretty much right.

Membership helps a ton and bringing the show to new people is also huge. God bless you guys for caring and trying to do the things that you talk about here.

"God Bless us, everyone" and that certainly includes you Cenk.

I would subscribe, but there is a massive wall in the way, credit card, some one needs to "invent" online payment with a debit card.

I subscribe to the turks. it's like 10 bucks a month, I never feel any pain from it. enough people doing that and Ben wouldn't have to go and do stories on Brittney Spears' underpants to make a living.

The idea of getting them on MSNBC to replace Imus/Scarborough makes my mouth water. Where do we send the mail?

by cosmic on 08/22/2007 11:43:57 AM EST

My thinking is, we might be better off directing these at Countdown, where we know we have "friends".  This is their email:
countdown@msnbc.com

Maybe they could point us someplace good.
For MSNBCTV, this is the email for viewer comments.  We could do both, I guess.
viewerservices@msnbc.com

We should try to paraphrase and keep the emails unique, but I suggest sending a link to one of the Turks more popular Youtube clips and to the TYT website.
I will post my email to them in a subsequent post.

Let me know what you think.  Maybe we could then post this and the preceding as a separate diary.

Dear Keith, and/or Countdown producer,

I am a loyal viewer of Countdown, but sometimes, I feel like there's nothing else on MSNBC for me. I'd like to help you change that.

Cenk Uyger, a frequent guest on Countdown, is also the host of The Young Turks, a national radio show. They also stream video of the show on their website, and were the first internet TV show.

You can check out some of their videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user /TheYoungTurks

And their website here:http://www.theyoungtur ks.com/

The show has a large and loyal listenership, and it's because they handle politics in a way that is accessible and entertaining, and they also cover other topics of interest. The show

is smart and funny, without resorting to shock tactics so common in radio.

These guys are already doing a TV show, it is the most natural thing in the world for them to take over Imus' old spot. This is not just pointing a camera at a radio set, these guys

do an actual TV show, much more engaging than the static shots you get from most "radio on TV".

You guys know Cenk, you know how good he'd be. Pass this along to someone who'll listen, or let me know what I can do. We need more reasonable voices in the media.

Sincerely,

I will sign up because it helps. But I'm more into Cenk and various different people as co hosts. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

Thanks for the quote....I couldn't stop laughing. I needed that.

Personally I think Cenk should man the show on his own for now since he's been doing such a great job, though I really like the "draft Junior" idea if it means Wes co-hosting a couple times a week.  Maybe the show won't be as marketable without the standard pillars, it would allow Wes to tend garage since he's always seems to be occupied by "the fam" and give time for the triumphant return of TYT's long-lost Princess to reign in her queen status.

Ok, I'll stop living a fairytale, but when Junior's not around why not mix it up with the wealth of talent already at the Young Turks.  Ana's showing great promise, as well Jayar's sharpening political voice...

I don't want to sound bitter, but who is this Ben guy you're talking about?  (j/k mixed with a little truth)

by rev24 on 08/27/2007 09:12:40 PM EST

I haven't listened to The Young Turks since they moved to Air America, and I barely visit the site anymore, so I was going to cancel my subscription.  But, in the interest of supporting progressive talk radio, and because I like Cenk, I will continue on with my subscription.

by TJD on 09/05/2007 08:03:37 PM EST

I (shockingly) don't get TYT on the local "progressive" talk radio station here in Chicago.

If you're in the same boat in your city, do like I have and email the station (and have everyone you know that's willing do the same), tell them you're a fan and that they should add TYT to their lineup.

Including a link to a high profile interview (say, Alan Greenspan, Jimmy Carter, etc) helps.

PS---I also want to look into the local talk stations that play conservatives hosts most of the time (but have "moderate" hosts the rest of the time).

Seriously, up here in sticksville (Mohawk Valley, upstate NY) we're lucky we can get NPR on the radio, much less a station carrying AAR.  It's podcast land pour moi; thank (insert make-believe deity here) for them!  Just ponied up my ten clams a month so I can get the whole thing.

I second the motion to draft "Junior."  We need more progressive vets speaking out.
