UK surveillance system will be on the lookout for cell phones

There are some states in the U.S. who have decriminalized first offense drunk driving meaning offenders will not even have a criminal misdemeanor on their record. Contrast that to the U.K. where you could get two years if one of their 4 million government cameras catches you talking on the telephone.

Using cell-phone in car =  2 years in prison!

Causing an accident while on cellphone = 14 years!

Motorists who use a hand-held mobile phone or fiddle with a satellite-navigation system while driving could be jailed for up to two years.

Prosecutors have said they could be charged with dangerous driving in a dramatically tougher approach to such offences.

Those caught fiddling with an MP3 music player or texting on a mobile at the wheel could also face the charge.

Prosecutions will be brought whenever it is judged that using the equipment posed a danger, such as forcing a car to swerve or causing a distracted motorist to jump a red light.

Those who kill while using a mobile phone will face 14 years behind bars under the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Director of Public Prosecutions Ken Macdonald said: "There is widespread public concern about the use of mobile phones and other hand-held electronic equipment while driving.

"We accept that in cases where there is clear evidence that danger has been caused by their use - such as texting while driving - then our policy should spell out that the starting point for charging will be dangerous driving."

Should I be outraged about this?  Because I'm not.  They wouldn't have made the law if people hadn't demonstrated that, without the law, they aren't capable of showing the appropriate level of responsibility when they drive.  I have no sympathy for people who think they're so busy that they need to drive and text at the same time.  People like that have an inflated concept of their own importance.

It's two years just for making a one minute call too not just texting. You could stop people from J-walking with those penalties. Doesn't the government have some marijuana smokers to deal with or something?

Their government isn't like ours, either. They're like a nation of sheeple, accepting whatever lame-brained laws that their nutty politicians pass. They may grumble a bit, but have yet to do anything about the incessant spying with cameras, laws that protect the guilty while hurting victims, illegal aliens who get prize homes and stipends while ordinary Brits are sweating it out trying to make ends meet and get the tiny home they can afford.

It's OK to spy on citizens in the UK. Unlike the United States where you're innocent until proven guilty, in the UK, defendents are assumed guilty until they can prove they're innocent, which is much more difficult to do, even where they truly are innocent.

Never compare what Brits are doing to the way things "should" be here. I've asked a lot of Brits I travel with why they didn't do anything to get rid of Tony Blair--the answer is that the other party is so much worse. They don't know how to get heinous laws changed either.

And then they sympathize that we Americans are stuck with a pathetic unelected punk and his thugs--who are illegally spying on us. When's the real impeachment starting so we can get to the investigations!!
