Young Turks Superbowl Party

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
If you like this story, digg it!
We are going to cover the Superbowl on The Young Turks. But as always, we're going to try something different. We can't show the game, but we can comment on the game. So, we'll have a play-by-play of the play-by-play.

Think about it.

You can put us in the corner of your TV room or living room on the comptuer screen and it'll be like we're all watching the game together.

More below ...

It's going to be super casual. No high-tech wizardy. Just us watching the game at Ben's house and making insightful commentary on the game. You'll see us eating and drinking Zima, or whatever else we do.

If something goes wrong with the broadcast because we are trying a remote shoot from a different location, then, oh well. We'll continue to watch the game and not fix the problem (of course, Dave will try to fix it, but not too hard since we want to watch the game, too).

It's super casual, it's super Young Turks, it's Super Bowl. And then two days later, it'll be Super Tuesday. C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, does it get any better?

Old school TYT favorites like Contessa will also be there, of course. Check it out and see who else shows up. Who knows, maybe Jim Caveizel will stop by.

I'll be home alone and working, but I still get to go to a Superbowl Party!

I would like to see live coverage of everything like this.  Woot woot.

by Spencer on 01/31/2008 05:26:46 AM EST

Cenk... gotta agree with you... nothing better.  Superbowl and then super Tuesday... I don't know what it says about me that this is like my favorite time of year, but I love it.  I am totally there!  I'll be moving the comp next the the big screen.  Then I can have it all!  MUAHAHAHAAH!
The only thing that could make it better is if some how there is a tragic accident injuring all the players of both the Giants and the Pats, and the only teams ready to play at that moment are the Jaguars and the Steelers and who ever wins get the championship.  I'd by that for a dollar.

by Das Gimp on 01/31/2008 06:30:41 AM EST

One caveat.  I don't know if it works the same for cable, but with satellite, when you do "live" events such as the state of the union or the primaries, your broadcast is about 60 to 90 seconds later than we receive on the satellite.  I am not sure how this will work with a live play-by-play for a football game where a 60 second delay can be several plays late.  But, we shal see.  Good luck.

I'm not really a huge fan of American football but I normally go to a Superbowl party with friends. This year no one cobbled one together so I'll be here at TYT.

Root for Anybody But the Pats!  Just icing on the cake it's a NY team in the mix.

I'll see if I can sell my better half on having the laptop fired up during.  I don't expect she'll be keen on the idea, but there it is.  I'll make my pitch.  :-)

Normally I'd be excited about TYT covering this, but NOT if I have to hear Cenk cheer for Brady and the Pats and talk about how amazing they are, etc.

I like Cenk too much to put myself in a position to be pissed at him over the Yankees Of Football (aka, the new arrogant asses of football that will replace the arrogant 72 Dolphins as the most arrogant, obnoxious team of all time).  :)

I'm not sure that's fair.  Yes, Miami went undefeated in 1972, but they had to struggle through most of those games, and I think they were justifiably proud of their accomplishment.  Now, I hate the Patriots, but they regularly clean their opponents' clocks.  Mybe it's a judgment call, but I'd call them the greatest team of all time -- if they win today.  And if you really are the greatest, is it "arrogant" ; to say it?

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee..."  Ali  doesn't get enough credit for also being the Greatest Poet of All Time.

(My raw passionate hatred of the pseudo-Patriots stems from a racial incident caused by their managment many years ago for which I still hold a resentment although they have completely reformed their evil ways, and why does anyone actually "hate" a team anyway -- it makes no sense, but I can't really explain why I want the Giants to drive them into the ground and rip off their heads and piss into their necks as the blood comes pouring out.  Maybe it's because I started out as a Chicago and Ditka fan.  He turned a lot of us peaceniks into bloodthirsty killer-wannabes.  Or maybe it's because I have to work during the game.  But at least I've got a TYT party to bring along!)

Merriam-Webster defines arrogance as:

Main Entry:ar·ro·gance Listen to the pronunciation of arrogancePronunciation: \ˈer-ə-gən(t)s, ˈa-rə-\ Function:noun Date:14th century
: an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions

So I think the Pats if they win, would be justified in calling themselves the best single-season team ever, having won more games in a season than anyone else. That's not overbearing, and it's an air of superiority rooted in fact. Arrogance is when Chad Johnson guarantees victories or when other players say they "could've" won against a team they lost to. Just my opinion.

I've never said the Patriots aren't a ridiculously good team this, quite possibly the best of all time.  And while they EASILY could (and should've) lost 2 games (especially that Ravens game where BAL had like 3 penalties in a row that lost it late in the 4th quarter) this year, the bottom line is they didn't.

I respect that.  It doesn't mean I have to LIKE them or their asshole of a coach (who dresses like a homeless man and doesn't always shake hands after a loss), and it especially doesn't mean I'm going to root for Goliath to beat David today.

Like I've said before, unless you're from that area (which reminds me, if you are you should be content with your two World Series rings in the last 10 minutes and 3 recent superbowl championships), there's absolutely NO good reason to root for the Patriots today.  The 72 Dolphins struggled, eh?  So did every Patriots team until this year!

They used to be the masters of just *barely* squeaking out victories at the end of games. Consider that they only won each superbowl by 3 points

I also wonder what the San Diego/Pats game (a 10 point win if I remember right) would've looked like had the 3 best players on the Chargers offense not been hurt (Rivers, LT and Gates)?  But we'll never know, so it's quite possible the Pats would've won anyway to be fair.

At any rate, rooting for the Patriots today is like rooting for Ivan Drago to beat Rocky! It's just plain un-American to root for the Yankees of Football to beat the underdog! ;)

PS---If only the Bears didn't have that flukey Monday night loss to the Dolphins, otherwise there'd be no question who the best single season team of all time was.  After all, they CRUSHED their *playoff* opponents.  They allowed a total of 10 points in 3 playoff games, including the SuperBowl.  Now THAT is just insane. The 2000 Ravens were pretty awesome on D too, but even they weren't quite as dominant (no playoff shutouts).

I root for the Bears and Pats (Bears take precedence all the time, though) so this year and last year have been killers. This loss feels like a punch in the stomach...2 fuckin' Mannings in a row?!?! Dammit! I can't believe this shit!

....

Sorry. It's a bad evening. Good win for the G-Men.

To me the best part of the Super Bowl is the ads.

I'm not much into sports, but my favorite part of the Super Bowl celebration is the ads.. I hope Cenk and the gang will show them and do some commentary on them.

I can't remember any good ads at this moment, but I remember some of the really bad ones like the farting mooses(or were they horses in the Budweiser ad) and Mike Dika in the viagra ads.

WOW what a combination for that key Super Bowl deomgraphic-- Overwight men who love to watch farting mooses and not able to get an errection in their lazy-boys chairs(also probably cutting the cheeze at the same time).

Let's not forget the halftime show. Where were you during that historic Janet Jackson performance?  I was in the kitchen grabbing a Corona at that very moment...

Ahhhh my Super Bowl memories, looking forward to many more.

AMERICA F--K YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had to go away during Superbowl halftimes the last couple of decades in order to avoid throwing up.  Nsync, fucryinoutloud!   Cutie boy bands???  Alanis?   And whoever thought of putting Britney Spears together with Aerosmith on the field between halves???  Yeah.  They really make me think "football".

Well, maybe Tom Petty is more appropriate, but I still wanna see tubas bumping into bass drums as they try to form a letter "S" that ends up looking like a 40-car pile-up on the freeway.  Now that's a football halftime!

Tune in when the game starts. I'll probably go over to Ben's at 6, but the game starst a little later than that. I think about 6:20 ET.

We might be on a little earlier than that, but we should definitely be ready to go (if it works) by kick-off.

Hell, yeah!

This'll be the best Superbowl since the one where I got a neckrub from a stripper and it was soooo good that I puked and passed out. The kicker? It was before kickoff I was still on my first beer. They kicked me out for being drunk. Didn't feel like I was in a position to protest much (BIG bouncers).

A question has plagued me ever since...after getting the best neckrub in your life, how exactly do you approach a stripper you just got puke on and tell her you want to marry her?

Well, I was supposed to be going to our annual SB party, and since it is the local team actually playing, Giants - season tickets, covered, lower tier on the 50 (please don't hate me -my best friend from highschool's uncle was the comptroller for the Giants) this was to be an extra SWEET event.
BUT I woke up this morning - SICK as sick can get. BUT, then I remembered TYT's SB online party and I was SAVED!!!

AMEN Brothers and Sisters....AMEN!!!!

Thanks for trying to do this Dave.

Cheers to one and all!!

See ya at game time!!

I am not missing the SB party AT those seats (I wouldn't have gotten sick if I was out in AZ). Those are our regular season ticket seats.
I just picked up whatever germies are floating around and developed a sinus infection... but then, fell asleep on my back last night and woke up with the thing that hangs down at the back of your throat  - the uvula- swollen to the point of it getting in the way of breathing and swallowing...So - don't want to pass it on to anyone else....and feel pretty miserable.  NO WORRIES - got an anti-biotic already and its getting easier. "GO GATORADE!"   Yep - my life is wierd.
Thanks again.

the *real* reason Cenk is rooting for the Pats is because of the Shula Snub!

PS---It's nice to hear Cenk bringing up what I wrote in my earlier post, that the 85 Bears were WAY more dominant than this Pats team, especially in the playoffs.  But yes, of course I'd rather have the Bears in the SB than brining up how good they were in 85.  :(

Eli is incredibly young for a QB these days.  All you hear about on ESPN is how people are retaining guys into their late thirties and early 40s for QB because only someone with huge amounts of experience and smarts has the sheer brainpower and chessmaster's instincts to manage increasingly complex offenses.

I think BOTH Mannings have some really terrific careers to look forward to.

Now if we can only get Rex to season in the same way Eli has.

by jarett on 02/04/2008 01:25:44 AM EST

But next year, I can see the Pats getting their LB corps filled with young talent and making another run. All we need are some coverage LBs, and a bit deeper O-line. I think we can do it again next year for sure.

Now, my main team, the Chicago Bears, are another question. I think we should get started on talking draft and offseason now that the Giants are the champs and the season is basically done. (Pro Bowl blows anyhow)

What are the number one draft needs for the Chicago Bears?

(They are, incidentally, probably my number two team, with the Bills, Colts and Jets sharing a distant third.)

OT. We have old (like hung-out-with-Methuselah-ol d) tackles in LT John Tait and RT Fred Miller. The line was piss-poor, the QBs were beat up, especially by end rushers and our run game was I believe last in the league. That, to me, is more important than replacing QB because it won't matter who's under center if you can't protect him. (SB XLII made a pretty great case for that, didn't it?)

Patriots fell apart at the end of the year.  They had too many old guys on defense and their pass protection was fucking horrible.

by schmoab on 02/03/2008 11:28:35 PM EST

Why didn't they go Max Protect? Why did they keep going with 4 wides? Why not at least have TWO tight ends in pass protection? It seemed so dumb to watch Brady get hit and then keep spreading it out and leaving him open to being hit. It's not as though Osi or Strahan were being stopped one-on-one, so why no help? It makes no sense to me...

How Plax's defender was like TEN YARDS away from him with the gamewinner at the end of the 4th quarter.

What the hell happened there?  You don't stick to Plaxico Burress like GLUE when he's been performing incredibly well the whole game and during the entire season?

We double-teamed Moss for a reason.  Very dumb move on the Pats' defensive coordinator's part.

I do think DB performance was significantly worse for New England, but the Giants' DBs had my eyebrows rising several times.

by jarett on 02/04/2008 01:30:02 AM EST

NE DBs more than underperformed. Hobbs and Samuels are great defenders and they reminded me of Walt Harris and Terry Cousin when they played for the Bears. Bad news bears indeed.

Only thing is, I think that's in part because the D-line performance was VASTLY greater on the part of the Giants. Of course, blowing coverage time after time on a game-winning drive in the final minutes of the 4th quarter can't be a buck passed onto the defensive line, but the Pats line just doesn't have the sort of end rushers the Giants have. No one does and to my mind, that's why the Giants won. If any deserves an MVP award, it should go to the entire D-line; they completely dominated the game from start to finish.

Cynicism is poison to reform and pumps life into the status quo.
