Friday Fun Post: How and when did you discover TYT?

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit
Its time for a Friday fun post!

I'm just curious to see how people have become members, why and/or what was their first encounter with TYT.

Sharing time!

I was just thinking how it was almost a year ago that Chris and I happened upon our first TYT video on Youtube. We think it was about Heather Mills and what a bitch she was (is). Later we came back to Cenk's take on Bill O'Reilly's amazement with the "urban" culture that he encountered in Harlem and how "normal" those people actually were...

After we realized these young turks were pretty funny we subscribed to their YouTube channel. Then we explored the web site and found out they talk about serious shit as well and hey, they made it interesting!

We watched the show live for a month or so until we started feeling left out for not having access to the PostGame Show. We were like, what are we missing? (and, mainly, what game? which nights? it was confusing)

Finally around December (or early Jan) Chris got me (us) the membership as a New Years gift and we've been enjoying it since:) Then we spent the remainder of our winter break watching old episodes and post games shows on the website that we had missed. It was intense, but we had to catch up...

...and we all lived happily ever after.

But it's Friday, so let's have some fun.

Back in 2005, Olbermann started co-hosting for an hour of Dan Patrick's show on ESPN radio.  I've been a huge fan of Olbermann since his SportsCenter days, so I decided to give Countdown a look, and pretty quickly became a regular viewer.

Olbermann started bringing on then-little-known Rachel Maddow.  I thought those segments were better than most, so I decided to check out her radio show.  I signed up for an AirAmerica membership, which gave me access to all of their shows.

I didn't know anything about the young turks at that time, but I saw that they had the (east coast) morning drive slot.  I thought, 'morning drive?  they must be a wacky bunch.'

Two weeks after I started listening Ben left the show, so 99% of my young turks experience has been just Cenk and the crew.  It's an awesome show.

The first time I saw The Young Turks was a few months back, maybe three or four months, on YouTube. At first I thought their YouTube channel WAS the entirety of where The Young Turks did its business and it wasn't until I was actually paying attention later that I discovered, oh, hey, these guys have a website. And then I quickly discovered after that, that HEY, wait, those YouTube videos are just several-minute clips of a several-hour long daily show.

Been watching ever since.

I used to listen to Maddow in the Morning on AirAmerica while showering for work. One day, back in fall 2006, Rachel was gone and some trio of lunatics was coming out of my radio. At first, being a massive Rachel fan, i was pissed. However, i had nothing else to listen to, so i figured i'd give them a try.

They turned out to be Cenk, Ben, and Jill.

It didn't take long and i was hooked. I listened to them then, in the car on the way to work, and on the streaming loop when i could. However, i kept missing stuff, so i finally gave in to Cenk's mesmerizing chant to, "Become a member, already! Just do it!" I just had to get the show commercial-free, whenever i wanted it, and complete with post-game show.

I haven't looked back since. Long live the TYT Armada! We are legion!

I came across the Young Turks when I travelled to England and I did not have TV.

I had no choice, but to rely on the internet for news and media.

I was on Youtube. Stumbled across a TYT video. Cenk had me hook, because he was real and serious about Politico issues.

I have been hooked every since then. Keep it coming TYT crew. Once I get my finances in order I will be a memeber too :))

I first saw/heard the Turks filling in for Laura Flanders several years ago; before they got their own show on Air America.  I immediately began to listen to them on RadioPower.org as i wasn't interested in satellite radio, and then when they started offering memberships & airing the video show, I joined up.  (Not sure if I have that timeline 100% correct, but off the top of my head...).

I put myself in a media lockdown...didn't watch or listen to anything for months, not even NPR. That Christmas my wife got me an ipod. Loaded up my music and I was set. Didn't have to listen to the radio.
After a while I needed more. There had to be something out there. So I searched "LEEBRUL" on Itunes.
Tried a couple mostly junk. Then I stumbled on Best of the Left podcast. TYT ever since.
I know the BOTL guy is on TYT alot. He's done a real nice job for quite a while.

I first heard TYT on accident when they started on AAR.  I was up insanely late playing Resident Evil 4 and the show came on in the background.  They were making fun of some picture that they were showing on the website, and after a while I had to come and see what the pic was (I think it was one of those slutty beauty queen scandals or something like that) and I was hooked.  And I think I became a member maybe a few months(?) after that.  This is back when it was Cenk, Ben, and Jill, and that was my favorite thing about the show.  It wasn't just one host and a lame-ass cohost that pretty much echoed whatever the main host said.  They all had very unique voices and a perfect chemistry (even when Cenk and Jill would fight).   They filled my Franken void very nicely.

by Spencer on 10/10/2008 04:22:16 PM EST

I started listening back in the day on AAR. I couldn't get into most of their programming but I kept hearing this guy going off on the republicans.

At first it just seemed like entertaining rants but I listened for a bit longer and I've been a TYT junkie ever since. Great informative and entertaining stuff.

Keep on keepin on Turks, I expect to be listening to you for many years to come.

the youtube clips". Only later I found out about the

A post-doc in my lab, Mary, noticed that I liked to stay around in lab until late some nights and mentioned that there's this really great radio show called the young turks which started at 6pm....and that I should tune in to pass the time.

Well I did, and liked their stuff, this was also the time where the absolute truth with jill pike was still on, and I enjoyed that too.  (someone should really tell jill that she's a closet feminist).

Recently I found that there's an active blog, which is very enjoyable to read.

All in all, I'm very pleased at the information I'm getting from TYT, esp. during the election season (soooo much better than cable media).

And here I thought for a while before TYT that my only real source of good news was the daily show!

by DocZee on 10/10/2008 05:07:26 PM EST

every night and found TheYoungTurks satellite radio show replayed really, really early on Sat. and Sunday morning.  It only took two weeks before I began enjoying those mornings more than any other.  From there, I've chased them across their short-lived career as morning hosts on AirAmerica and have been a loyal paying podcast subscriber for about a year.

I downloaded the craptastic software known as iTunes.  I was flipping through streaming radio and came across radiopower.org. I would randomly catch TYT, but never realized it was live.

I liked TYT better than some of the other shows on radiopower because they weren't crazy leftists- they were reasonable. I loved the interplay between Cenk & Ben with Jill's questions from the 'common person' point of view.

After a few months of randomly catching the show, I found my way to the website- and realized I had been hearing it live. That's when they were on Sirius. Then they got fancy with the live video.

Dammit, They're doin' it live!

I'm with Jazzchic -my old school v1 chatroom buddy.  Back in the day when I was working a dead-end job in LA I also got this new fangled piece of software called iTunes.  From there I found my 2 favorite radio programs, WeFunk radio (old school Funk and Hip-Hop) and the Young Turks.

What really caught my ear was something very much more common to the old skool show, the outrage and righteous indignation.  Many of you new listeners won't believe this but Cenk used to be... volatile, to put it nicely.

But what got me hooked was hearing Cenk describe his getting arrested in Miami for 'protesting' Elian Gonzales... wow, what a great story!

back in the day of Buddha, Tim, QSoundrich, KenTX, Adam, the the rest of the old log-in crew.

So I've since moved back to San Fran, but wish I could have scheduled a studio visit before the time when they started at like 6am... EST sucks...

 Peace!

I got Sirius radio in my jeep.  It had to be fall of 2003, I think.

Liked talk radio (sports) and was interested in talk radio but politics.  Didn't like most because it was so conservative.

When I saw Sirius had a liberal channel, I checked it out.  It was mostly just awful, IMHO.  Except right as I got off work, The Young Turks started.  I loved it.

I listened driving home from work and got to the point I would take the radio inside and listen until it ended (had no way to download/record back then.)

My wife (girlfriend then) liked it too so it worked out.  Then they went an hour later which was MUCH more inconvenient for me but I got by as best I could.

I called in a lot back in those days.  It seems after Kerry lost I went into a political funk and could barely stand news.  When I went back to find the Turks, they had gone to XM.  So I got XM (I have both now, or my wife has Sirius and I have XM).  I have followed them pretty closely since.

I know there are folks who have been listening longer than me here.  When did they debut?  How far back do some of you old timers go?

by ProfRich on 10/10/2008 08:07:34 PM EST

I was pretty much on board Sirius from the time it started.  It seems like TYT was one of their shows from way back.  I remember that they would make like one episode of TYT a week - at least it seemed like that - and then the station they were on would play it over and over... I would listen to the same show several times, memorizing parts of it, just because I was a fan .. always could not stand Jill Pike, what a moron.  Anyhow, they went to a non-drive time time slot, and then what I thought was a stupid move of jumping on the sinking ship of Air America.  Living in a red state, AA was not a listening option.  So I lost track of the show for a few years, and then found their website.  Now I am happy to be a subscriber, but miss Ben's input.....!

with Thom Hartman because my roommate at the time (still my friend) suggested him. I was hooked.

But he kept mentioning this "Young Turks" show. I delayed checking them out for months, probably because of the name. Why? I don't know, it wasn't anything against Turks (I didn't know a thing about Turkey) so I can't explain it.

Finally I relented after my friend mentioned them for the 10th time. Jill was gone and Ben's reign was *almost* over. But it was Cenk that hooked me in instantly with his boisterous nature, and although I loved the university level course audit that was Thom Hartmann, it was draining to only listen to him day after day (in addition to reading a variety of stuff, WSJ, NY Times, etc.).

I want to say that was late spring, and then Cheryl and I met Cenk at the Yearlykos get together in Chicago in August 07 (see profile pic). He was just as funny and down to earth in person.

Granted, I felt kinda bad because we made Cheryl lure him to our table but hey, we had to do what we had to do. ;)

And the rest is history.

I heard about TYT back in the days of radio power. I don't know if AAR was even around back then. I lost a little interest when Jill and Ben both left, but Cenk lured me back with his sultry eyes.

by imband on 10/10/2008 11:06:37 PM EST

When Al Franken left AAR I thought I'd never recover from the soul-crushing desperating I felt. But Cenk and Ben put together a great show that had me hooked after listening to one podcast. I signed up for membership way before I cancelled my AAR subscription and was glad I missed nothing when they were dropped from AAR. Nowadays I listen to every minute of show that's produced, even without the same crew I started listening to. Still, my favorite day of the week will always be Bens-days!

by FiascoJones on 10/11/2008 01:28:12 AM EST

I used to listen mainly out of loyalty. His book was one of the funniest and most cathartic laughs I'd had in a long time after 9-11, but his show was only occasionally funny. Still on balance it was extremely informative and entertaining. One day in the fall of '06, sometime in September I think, he (Franken) had Ben and Cenk on to plug the show. They sounded familiar because I had heard their show a couple times in the middle of the night on local radio (I was in grad school at the time). I liked it, but it was inconvenient. When I tuned into the newly minted AAR Young Turks on podcast I never looked back. They were and are by far the best show on AAR. I emailed Cenk with that comment as soon as it occured to me. I still listened to Franken, but mostly because he drew the big names down. I was a member within probably 3 months, despite already having the AAR subscription.

Keep it up Cenk, you're still the best.

They're bringing back Maron?  What time slot?  Hook me up with the details Haz!  I know he's doing the show with Sam in the afternoons (which is great), but is he coming back to do a full radio show or something?

And I love that there are so many people on here (including myself) that arrived in Turkville after Franken closed up shop.  I still miss that show...  Hopefully he'll win in Minnesota and make C-SPAN hi-larious.

If you haven't already, check out Maron v. Seder everyday at 12:00 p.m. (PT) on their new site.  I believe they're affiliated with Air America (see AAR site for show link as well), though like TYT, they host a live internet show that's well worth watching.

I was just thinking about Maron's passive agressivenes towards Cenk (mispronounciation of name, occasional mocking) and I just had a revelation.  Does it have to do with TYT taking over Morning Sedition's timeslot back in 2006 (yeah they're was almost a year gap between the two, but you never know with Maron)?

Actually heard of  TYT(ithink) back in mid '06?   Strangely enough, I did some work at Arlington County Public Television before then.  I could swear remembering The Young Turks  being on the schedule even back then.  What do I know? I was raised DC and now live in Colorado.  (where I'm definitely the most political of my peers) No matter what, I'm ready to hear the facts.  I'll actually be in NYC next week and would love to communicate with the local in-the-knows.  Shout at me.

A progressive friend turned me on to a few great web sites in 2004 or 2005, including Truthout and Counterpunch and Crooks & Liars.  I'm pretty sure I first saw clips of Cenk and Ben on Crooks & Liars, but when I went to try to find an old school clip today, I couldn't find any that looked old enough.  I wasn't quite sure what TYT was at the time, even after seeing clips.  I thought maybe it was on TV, and I don't have TV.  So, I enjoyed the clips, but I didn't really know where it was coming from.  Sounds dumb now--but that was right before I got a computer at home too.

I think I really got hooked as the primaries started getting going.  The show was different now, with Cenk as the main guy, and Ana in her casual wear (when did Ana start?).  I really liked the new format and crew.  By last fall I was definitely an addict, and I dove into the forum around Xmas last year, to the horror of all.

That makes sense then--my addiction began not too long after Ana came on.  Before she was bold enough to order Cenk around ;)  The on-screen chemistry is much more evolved and fun now.  If they didn't have mates, I'd be betting on a love affair!

Hi! First of all I want to say that your show is the funniest and most informative in the case of U.S. Elections. Just to throw an example, I have been having many hilarious moments watching the issues on the “Mavericks”. Unbelievable how they are even allowed to run a campaign after all what has been happening.

But let’s move on to the original question.

I'm a student from Finland, about 5,500 miles away from TYT headquarters, so how the hell does a guy from Finland (studying in Germany at the moment) come across TYT? (..and sorry about my English)

Well, couple months ago, I saw a speech from internet given by Senator Obama and I was really amazed the way he presented issues and of course the way he is in contact with the people.

And because we are living important times in the case of how the future is going to look like, no matter where you are, everybody knows that what is happening in America will affect the whole world, so I started to search more information about the candidates.

Before I knew, I was watching Cenk Uygur presenting John McCain and his policies. After that I have been watching TYT videos everyday for the past two months. The Young Turks has really been one kind of an educational programme for me about how the elections work in America. Not to forget about the educational information about the issues involved in the elections.

If I would be Senator Obama, I would take couple of TYT videos and run them in TV against McCain.

Of course I am not the one who should be saying these things, but from a Finnish point of view:

It is unbelievable to see the contrast between the candidates. There’s a man whose liability can be questioned endlessly, whose actions can be seen as hostile towards everybody and who is a 72 year old man hanging around with Sarah Palin. On top of all he’s going to disappoint all the people who has been investing on him, so how can this man run up against Barack Obama who is exactly the opposite?

You all know better than me that how much better Obama would be as a President and I really hope that he will actually be the next President. I am 100% sure about the fact that European countries, Russia, Asian countries and basically the whole world would prefer to work together with Obama than with McCain and solve the problems the world is facing right now!

In the end I just want to say that I love your show. Thank you very much and keep up the good work what you all have done so far!

-Patrik-

KIDDING!

I am a radio manogamist.  I fell for Sam Seder and Janeane Garofalo's The Majority Report and one night, Cenk, Ben & Jill subbed for them and i liked them, but then felt bad cuz i didn't wanna cheat on Sam & Janeane..so I put that night completely out of my head and tried to forget TYT.

I followed Sam through different shows, when he subbed for other hosts...I watched him on the Sammy Cam...learned alot and laughed alot and there is nobody on this Earth who is better than Sam Seder when a Conservative listener calls into the show, ammiright?

Sigh.

And then one cold day, Air America dumped him completely.  I wrote an angry e-mail to AAR management explaining why I was cancelling my AAR membership...but then I had no radio show to love.

And in the back of my brain, a little voice said, "remember that show that subbed for Sam & Janeane a few years back?  Maybe you should look them up!"

And the show was great (of course)...it wasn't Sammy but you gotta move on...and i took my Air America membership refund and applied it toward becoming a member here and now I'm a TURK all the way...

Except, of course, Sammy is back, with a new show with Marc Maron & I'm tempted....but since the shows air at different times I should be able to sneak em both in...

shhhhhhhhhhh

The only thing I have to add to RNinNYC's similar experience is that when I first heard TYT on Air America I was quite annoyed.  I remember leaving a number of bitter comments on their Air America blog bagging on the plastic culture of LA and my annoyances with the Cenk, Ben and Jill.  At the time I was very frustrated with Air America especially after the demise of The Majority Report and these Young Turks for some reason initially rubbed me the wrong way.  Randi Rhodes was starting to get on my nerves and I was left without a solid program for my day.

Anyway, left with a bunch of nothing, I picked up TYT on my AAR subscription and eventually became a TYT member.  I don't remember at what point my bitterness turned to love, but I don't think it really matters.  I'm just glad I don't have to wake up at the butt crack of dawn to catch the show live anymore.

I was told about TYT by my crazy Lib friend from Ohio. She also told me about Crooks and Liars. I was already a big AAR listener, so it must have been before they started airing on AAR. I became a member once I left the US and needed a guarantee that I would continue to get the show.

I stumbled on the show years ago when it was carried in its entirety by RadioPower.org (I listened on iTunes, with no video).  The first time I heard Cenk's voice, I visualized him as some kind of surfer-frat-dude.  Soon after I emailed them asking if I could buy a TYT t-shirt and get it shipped to me overseas and they said it would be no problem.

Who couldn't love people like that?

Since i live in Europe with CNN, BBW World and AlJazeera i find that TYT completes my hunger for news since i now can get input from "both political camps".

The show is really great, well worth $10 a month!!

I bet the Young Turks would really like to hear from brand-new viewers especially, to see where they are coming from.  So don't be shy if you are new here!

... when Dave set up the equipment in my living room and Ben and I started doing shows from there for Sirius. Then we found an intern named Jesus who would come in and produce the show. And then this hot girl Jill started to come in. So, I kept listening because it looked like this show might be fun.

The "Who's been listening the longest" award to Cenk.

Seriously, when did y'all start?

In fact, I would love to know when all the various changes took place, demo tape recorded, debut on radio, debut on Sirius, AAR, XM, etc.

Hard to reconstruct the timeline for me.

... at how many people started listening from Radiopower (they did a great service to all of our shows, including Thom Hartmann's show before we were on AAR). I'm also pleasantly surprised by how many people came in from Best of the Left Podcast.

One last thing, I'm surprised at how little people are from the original Sirius show, which was great and had a very strong following.

I know this is nto a scientific poll, but still. Again, I love that Chrismin put this up (I'm adopting that as your new name). Seriously, Yasemin, where are you from?

And if you have a problem with setting up your profile, reach out to Dave and he should be able to help you. He's very good with that.

I'm a Turkish-American. I am the daughter of a Turkish man...

that was a decisive factor in starting to watch TYT. I was like "look Chris, we Turks think Bill O'Reilly is a jack off too!" it was a very proud moment in my life. TYT, thnx for representing.

This post has been a lot of fun and we even got a call out! w00t w00t.

Boston used to have an AA outlet on AM radio. The Turks were slotted in early mornings, between Rachel Maddow and Stephanie Miller.

It took me awhile to warm up to the program. I thought Cenk and Ben were marvelously adept at making sense of the flow of news and politics (Jill Pike was around but didn't speak much), but I thought the pop culture stuff was pretty shallow and lame - still do. Nonetheless got hooked, but I usually turn it off when the topic swerves around to LA-centric gossip that I don't care about.

I was plowing through Iraq clips on YouTube this spring and stumbled upon one commemorating the 5th anniversary of mission accomplished. And I thought about how these guys addressed the depressive state of affairs in a way that really made me feel empowered at the same time.

Shortly after my initial discovery, there came the Rachel Ray clip about the jihadist surrender scarf and the infamous terrorist fist jab. Real warm laughs. Since then it's only been a question of time when I would start chipping in to help make sure this show keeps going. Plus to avoid the frustration of entering the web site in the middle of the broadcasting loop as well. Now I turn on the newest segment whenever I choose, grab a cup of tee and I'm home.

It was probably about 18 months ago when I first found TYT. I laughed my ass off at the "Cenk goes ballistic" video. I sorta just forgot about them until about a month ago when I decided to become a member and support these dudes.

by bwast on 10/12/2008 04:51:13 AM EST

When I first read the question, I couldn't remember how or when I found TYT, except that it was before they got onto AAR because I was a regular viewer at that point.

Then I started reading the other comments, and it all came back to me!

I discovered Thom Hartmann, and through Thom, I stumbled onto radiopower, which lead me to TYT.

When I first check out TYT, I wasn't too sure about this Cenk character, and Jill, well, she was hit and miss for me, but I loved Ben.  I would watch here and there, when I was bored, and Cenk started to grow on me.

Now, of course, I love Cenk, and I still adore Ben, but I'll always love them best when they're together.  And I've become a big fan of Jayar and Cave, too.  I'd love to see and hear a little more of Jesus, because I do enjoy the times he chimes in.

That was supposed to be Dave.  Not really a big fan of caves, actually.

as mine. I also found TYT pretty soon once they started on Air America, which I had randomly stumbled upon and started listening to Al Franken's show. I liked the fact that I could actually listen to radio made by those Americans that rarely get coverage on Finnish media (you know, the fringe...) and got to hear first hand that not all Americans were unintelligent and belligerent. There were some sad years when I got to be a bit discouraged, when it was quite unpopular to say out loud that not all Americans were idiots just because Bush was, because of the Iraq war was just such a mess and I mainly associate with people who just don't like bullying of any kind. You know, the peacenicks. Like our former president Ahtisaari, who will be honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize this year.

Anyhow, I found this new program started on Air America, and as it was on at a very convenient time for me (the not-so-prime-time in America), checked it out. I especially liked the balance between Ben and Cenk, Cenk being a little too overpowering for my taste. Ben was and is just great! I didn't find Jill leaving the show such a loss, when she did the actual show she was fine, but when she was bumped to do entertainment only, it just became too much of her insecurities. Very frank and honest though it may have been, it just didn't resonate with me. And I'm sure she's happier doing something serious and substantial.

When Ben announced he was going to leave the show I thought the show would just implode eventually, there was no way that Cenk character was going to carry the whole show by himself. Luckily, I was very wrong. Cenk absolutely does make the show enjoyable, informative and very honest. Everyone working with the show makes the show special, but Cenk truly has done a tremendeous job in keeping the show going, so here's my credit where it is due.

I didn't become a member until it became necessary it became necessary (Jan 2008?), i.e. the timeslot had changed to a more comfortable one for the makers of the show and the loop was taken down. I was a bit upset at first, thinking it would be completely outrageous for me to actually pay for listening to news etc with an American perspective, but fell in line the very day I no longer could watch the show. So it's my guilty pleasure and I watch every episode, albeit sometimes my work gets me out of the office and I fall behind. Yes, I still listen to the show at work and now I don't miss as much daily as I used to, because as a member I get to listen to the show without commercials and interrupt it when my job demands more of my attention..

I first saw this post on the Huffington Post in 2005 and I started watching for his posts after that.   I even went back and ready everything he had posted there up to that point.  I thought to myself, "wow, now there is a guy who seems to articulate positions that usually match my own".  I've been listening ever since.

I think it was in '04 listening to the Seattle Air America station while working in the studio on a Sunday when the "best of TYT" show came on. (Ben, Cenk and Jill) Cenk started to rant about how the dems wouldn't fight the Bush administration and how frustrating it was (is). It was as if the thoughts is my own head were coming through the radio. I was an immediate fan.

The only problem was the regular show came on at 3 to 6 am when I'm not awake. When I was up the am wavelength doesn't broadcast well till the sun rises and it was difficult to hear TYT garbeled with the sports station from Vancouver BC.

I had been resisting buying an iPod. $150 for a flash drive that plays mp3's! Please, not buying it! Well, I heard about the TYT membership, all the shows, postgame, no commercials, I could fast forward when Jill got shrill (yes, I too am a bad man) and best of all no bad reception.

Happy member. Money well spent. (refurbished iPod $72)  I engage in turk telling tuesday any day of the week.

I first heard Cenk and Ben on the Best of the Left Podcast. I listen to podcasts religiously during my daily commute on the subway. It used to be Democracy and Best of the Left. Now its DN and TYT (sometimes Ring of Fire too).

I was a miserable producer at a CBS Radio Affiliate in Los Angeles. I decided I needed to change my life and go on my first ever overseas trip to Europe. I needed more money, and this co-worker at CBS just happened to know about this show call "The Young Turks" who needed a temp. while their producer (the legendary Jayar Jackson) was away in Germany. I really needed the extra money, so I agreed to it. Dave called me and asked if working at 3am was okay with me, and I said yes (especially since I thought it was only going to be a three week thing.)

I fell in love with the show and someway, somehow, I became a full-timer at TYT. I got to quit my job from hell at CBS and I was happy with life once again.

The end : )

I would listen to the show on Sirius so on night I decided to check out the web site. I read the posts for a while and one day there was a person complaining that they could not stream the video because they used Linux.

I made an account to try to help the person out and just got sucked in.

I had never heard of The Young Turks until June of this year, I made a friend on Myspace and he told me it existed, he tried to explain what the show was about and he lost me when he said politics, however the 3rd hour seemed more my interest so I decided to check it out for shits and giggles.

Not going to lie, politics is like a foreign language to me so I didn't really pay attention to the show, it was the chat room that held me, you guys are hilarious! I started to pay more attention because Cenk is the man who knows his stuff, I was enjoying it and politics was becoming fun!!!  Ana is a doll with her Absurd News Alerts, always good times and the legendary Jayar Jackson makes so much sense with his realistic points that I had to keep tuning in.  I just became a member last week because I was told by another member SnowTiger that the members show gives Jayar more face & talk time...sold! lol.
David was very helpful with my membership set up and he's always so sunny, Jesus always obtains the video and photo images which makes TYT really fun and entertaining. If you can convert someone who hates politics like me, you can take over the world!

Now if only you'd come out with a Jayar calendar, then I'd be one really happy member! :)

Down here in Austin, in the late summer it gets bright in the middle of the day.  So bright you can see every detail of every little thing.  You have to squint.  It's almost painful,

For many years all we could hear on the radio waves here was the oppressive, debilitating garbage generated by Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, and others of their evil ilk.

Then one day I heard that a radio station way over on the opposite side of El Paso, TX, could be heard broadcasting Air America, although the signal was very weak here in Las Cruces, NM.  But I was so excited that I immediately flipped my car radio over to AM -- the first time I'd listened to that band in years because of the aforementioned right-wing tyranny -- and was delighted to hear Al Franken berating Norm Coleman.

This was long before Franken had decided to run against Coleman and, to be honest, I had no idea who Coleman was at first.  But as I listened, I knew that Franken had studied for the segment, spilling facts and impeccable logic, and destroying whoever this Coleman fellow was.

I started listening everyday, and eventually put a radio in my bathroom so I could hear Air America while I showered in the morning, and that was when I first heard The Young Turks.

My working hours vary wildly from day to day, and I didn't often get to listen to TYT then because they were on so early.  But when I finally got around to visiting the web site, I just had to keep going back.  Eventually, I joined, and I enjoy listening to TYT as a part of my normal routine.

Unfortunately, the show recently changed schedules and plays on the web here in New Mexico in the same time slots as NPR's All Things Considered and Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and I've listened to those shows for decades.  Fortunately, I can always catch the TYT loop and download the postgame.

So thanks, TYT, and that means "thanks Cenk, Dave, Jayar, Jesus, and Ana".  You've rescued me from the hell hole of right-wing talk radio.

I guess I stumbled upon a featured or top 100 video on YouTube in summer 2007.

Ana getting free shoes was one of the first ones I watched I think, classic!

Then I checked the channel sporadically until this summer when I decided to join up, I don't regret doing that.

Even though I'm not American, I've lived in the States for part of my life and have relatives there.

I follow the US elections more close than I do with the Norwegian ones. I know what to vote, so I don't feel the need to pay too much attention to it. And it's not nearly as entertaining as your stuff (yet).

Maybe I'll start my own Norwegian counterpart to the Young Turks and work on keeping the Progress party from power (our version of the Republicans).  Nah, don't think that's quite my niche, but it could be needed.

Caught you guys on Youtube during the democratic primaries.  This was the time Hillary refused to concede and gave a speech about being the next president, knowing Obama got enough delegate votes to cinch the nomination.

by JohnHUSSEINFante on 10/18/2008 09:54:34 AM EST

I heard Al and Janeane and others were putting together a network called Air America to add balance to the right-wing-laden airwaves, and I tuned in right from the beginning.  Soon I was eating, sleeping and breathing AAR 24/7... Then the US voted Bush into office for another 4 years and I went into hibernation for a long time.  I wanted to stick my head in the sand and put a sign on my ass that said "do not disturb til 2009".

One morning in 2006 I decided to crank up Air America just to hear some discussion about Dem chances for Congress, only to find they'd ditched the Morning Sedition for a new show.  I liked the balanced and educated voice of a guy named Ben and thought the girl's I-want-to-understand-this approach was a refreshing change.

There was only one problem: they had this other guy on who refused to ever be calm, ever explain the basis of his position or really do anything else but attack his perceived opponents.  I clearly remember my first reaction to this bloviating windbag was: "Ugh, he argues like a Republican".

Ooopsy doopsy...

Still, they captured my ear.  Out of my cocoon after the Dems won Congress in 2006, TYT soon captured my eyes too.  In addition to the regular show I started to watch the Absolute Truth, where I learned the big guy was actually quite entertaining and the girl was cute and lovable, but most assuredly insane.  I mean clinically.

Still, I was hooked.  Then in the ensuing drama of 2007 they lost Jill and Ben, and I thought this might be the end of the line... If the big guy doesn't do it for me, I may move on.  So I gave him a chance.  And day after day, week after week, he came through with a show that was informative yet entertaining, and had great guests.  Plus there was always that burning hunk of sexuality named Dave Koller keeping the big guy in check.

And, like everyone else's stories, mine ends with "and I've been listening ever since".

~Eric

Traveled from chagrin and bemusement at W.'s (s)election, through post 911 patriotic fervor and excitement, descended into post Iraq invasion depression, looked around to cheer myself up,....saw a book by Al Franken, thinking it was jokes, bought it,  read it, and discovered it was political satire, and devastating. Heard Al was on the radio,....something called Air America,.... got XM so I could hear the show,..... enjoyed Al's show for a while,......occasionally heard a Best of TYT show on Sunday AM. Liked what I heard but listening times were a problem. Al went off the air to begin his Senate campaign, had to find a replacement for my political satire fix, recalled the Turks ,recorded TYT on MYFI XM receiver. Listened for a while, then  TYT announced they were going off AAR, but could be heard on the website, went to the TYT Website, whipped out the Ipod, downloaded the free show,...wanted more,....became a member. Realized the show was way underpriced for the value I was getting from it,.....stepped up the membership level. Thanks for everything TYT, now I'm just angry, but hopeful and amused....I have tremendous respect for the work you put into the show. Sent a contribution to Al Franken's Senate Campaign,Thanks Al.

Am I the only one who first started listening to the Turks on AM in the Sirius Days?  I think they started on KFH (Wichita) in 2002, so I guess I've been a listener for a while.  I decided to subscribe to Sirius mainly so I could hear all 5 days of the show (KFH only did replays on Sat and Sun.)  Anyway if you didn't live in Portland, Pittsburgh or Wichita you wouldn't have found them on the AM dial.  I kind of wonder why they never caught on in more markets.  I listened mainly for the pop culture stuff, but with the TYT you used to get your Cenk, Ben and Jill for nothin' and your politics for free.

Seriously though, the show used to be a lot less serious when it was on Sirius.  It didn't become an all-politics show until they went on AAR... I'm really glad that stint is over because I wasn't a big fan of that version of the show.  The closest thing to the original show would be youtubes of the Absolute Truth.  At least they still throw us a bone every once in a while with Parent Trap and Dave Koller's America.

But I don't want to sound like the Bitter Show Critic.  I credit the Turks a lot with getting me more interested in politics.  So, Thanks!

Technically the Young Turks were on Sirius before KFH in Wichita, but a) not by much and b) Sirius was not consistently refreshing the pre-recorded shows.  For a while, KFH took it more seriously that Sirius.  (haha)

We were getting the shows in FM quality on there, which was nice. Not even Sirius has that for their talk streams. But I definitely remember starting listening in early or mid 2003. I was sort of undecided on the War until I heard Cenk bitching about it for long enough. That's sort of how Cenk got a lot of credibility from me, and obviously I think that's why Obama has done so well. Maybe Cenk can run for congress and play tapes from TYT circa 2003.

Started on Sirius in early 2002 when they kept playing the same show over and over and over, every day, every week for months.  In the summer of 2002 they started playing a new show every few days.  Sometime in late 2002 The Young Turks went live, daily on Sirius at 8am ET.  In the Spring of 2003 that time slot went to afternoons.  There were minor modifications of time and length, but I don't remember.

KFH in Wichita started in mid 2002.  Weekends only I believe.

WURP (I think) in Pittsburgh sometime in 2002.

KOTK in Portland in early 2003.

We left Sirius in September 2006 when we started on Air America at 6 am ET (brutal).  I believe in January of 2008 we left Air America and went web only.

I'm not sure now...Air America took away Marc, then Sam...TYT was suddenly there, in New York...It's all a blur, except that we loved you guys IMMEDIATELY...Though we'd never heard of you before. Like others, we couldn't stand to keep missing various parts of shows, and post-game shows...Now, we couldn't NOT be members, as we listen to the shows in order, kind of obsessively!!!...We (especially I), don't like to miss anything...plus, the hour you guys are on isn't the most convenient for us.  But, when we're home, TYT is on in the background, with us constantly running to the computer, to see the visuals. Someday, I hope we'll be a higher level member..(can memberships be joint??? we're actually 2 people!!!)

I started AAR for Al Franken, jumped on to Randi Rhodes and the Majority Report and then started to listen to this show called "The Young Turks". Been listening ever since.

by dominacus on 10/20/2008 09:57:21 AM EST

I was suscribing to The Al Franken Show thru iTunes, and I kept seeing I could get the first hour of something called The Young Turks for free.  "Well, why the hell not?" says I.  I really dug the interplay between Ben and Cenk (Jill was gone by then), and they were pretty firey.  But what really got me to suscribe and become a member was Cenk going off when the Repbulican douchebags got all fired up about MoveOn's General Patraeus ad in the NYT.  "This is a guy we've needed for YEARS," I thought, and I felt morally obligated (really!) to support it.

So I became a member, and Ben left immediately.  Blame me...

We drove to D.C. a couple times, and we deliberately didn't listen to TYT that week, and then we listened to 9 hours straight of TYT on the drive there and then again on the way back.  TYT membership really does come in handy for people who have shifting schedules, and have mp3 players.  I'm not saying anything...by the way those TYT shirts REALLY are as comfortable as they say...
