They're Out in the Open -- and Easy Targets

We've always known that there was a lot of racism just below the surface in this country.  I propose that John McCain, while actively encouraging racism with his fascist appeals, is actually performing a service for our country.

As people feel encouraged to express their racism, these maladjusted people will be easier to identify.  By bringing direct pressure on these people to change their views -- it IS possible -- we can build a better country.

My father was a career officer in the Air Force, and a racist.  He passed his views onto me, so that when I was in kindergarten and met my first black classmate, I belittled him as inferior because he was black.  Once.

Fortunately, my kindergarten teacher and my mother were not racists and helped me to understand that I had the wrong idea.  A person with a different color of skin is still a person just like me, they said, with the same feelings and hopes as me.  I was cured after one conversation.

My dad, on the other hand, had been a life-long racist, and he had lived much longer than me.  He would be a tougher nut to crack.  But my kindergarten teacher reported the incident to her superior, who reported it to hers, and eventually the complaint made its way to my dad's commanding officer.  My dad was ordered to change his views.

It took him a few months, but he did.

We must no longer tolerate racism in our country.  We must no longer be quiet when someone belittles someone just because of their race no matter the consequences to ourselves.  Tell them what you think.  Tell them how you feel.  Tell them their racism disgusts you.

This is a fight for the soul of our country.  Let's make it a fight to the finish.

--------------------------- ------------

P.S.  What I don't understand, though, is what can McCain's strategy possibly be?  He cannot win without the minority vote, and his and Palin's overt racism has made that vote disappear.  Is his goal now simply to tear apart our country?  Is it as simple as "if I can't have it then nobody can"?

That's pretty sick.

Just heard that only 26% of Latinos are for McCain now too. You can't win with racism when majority of the country will soon be of color, whether black, brown, or yellow or whatever. He is a desperate old white guy trying to hold back the tide of history. If the future we will all have to work together not only to save the country but the planet. Maybe the religious fanatics will eventually too or life on earth will end, although that's what they seem to want. If heaven is so great, just kill yourselves now and leave the rest of us to repair the earth. (Kudos to Bill Maher.)

Your willingness to be open and honest about a not-so-proud past within your family, is enlightening.

It takes great strength to admit what you have at any time in life. For this I admire you.

The world has become and continues to become a better place to live when people such as yourself and your father are willing to take a look at things from a different perspective, even when taking that look is difficult or maybe even painful.

You prove that it is possible to make people change, providing they are willing to listen to and accept other opinions. As the Obama campaign suggests, "It's time for change". Maybe the rest of the world will someday see it.
