Eh, you really need to check your terminology.
Socialists have come in two varieties:
A) The Marxist variety.
B) The Catholic variety.
In the 19th century the Catholic social movement was born. Many labor-unions were and are Christian or very close to the Catholic Church.
As for the Church in general, well, it's always been against dancing around the golden calf of unbridled capitalism.
Just consider Pope John Paul's and Pope Benedict's pronouncements. They're quite harsh.
Now, you can't pidgeonhole a faith into a particular politicial leaning as such. But protecting the poor has always been a constant in church history. Always considered a major part of the church's job.
Of course, the more corrupt popes, bishops and such, didn't always walk the walk. Typical human weaknesses... But the ideal was always clear.
For a Thatcherite or Grover-Norquist-type, sure, the Catholic Church seems socialist. But hey, they call everyone socialist who isn't on their side...
In any case, you're dead wrong about equating socialism with marxism. That's just historically incorrect.
