Open Thread - Satan's Minions Edition

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

Remember Turkletons, the Open Thread is a good place to link to articles, photos, or videos that don't necessarily need their own blog post.

Also, if you do not yet know how to post a link or insert a photo, you can learn by clicking on the little question mark in the blue circle (it means "help") below your post.  If you can't figure it out, ask here in this thread and we'll help you.

And finally, it's a good idea to review the past week's posts before posting your own, just to avoid posting the exact same thing as someone else.  Cenk is given a pass of course ;)

Welcome to all new forum folks!

Finally someone calls out the real stupidity of accusing Obama of being an Arab or Muz.  Campbell has had a few good commentaries like this.  She is doing a pretty good job of being nonpartisan about it too.  And she's nice looking too, don't you agree?

If you like, you can contact CNN here and applaud them for keeping it real.

by desertpear on 10/14/2008 03:55:34 PM EST

She's been doing a good job.  And she's a very attractive older woman (I use that phrase relative to my own age of course).

She has that pinched nose thing going on, but I can't complain.  ;)

No matter what their age, you will get a lot more respect from women by leaving age out of it ;)  I'd hit it.

My girlfriend said the exact same thing about Brown! Maybe when she hits 30, then 40, then 50 (etc.) she'll have a different take, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts!

So I really have to be careful describing a person as "older" around her!!  Campbell Brown is 40, by the way, and I just found out from her Wiki entry that we share the same birthday!!  That makes me eligible to be a news commentator, right?

Maybe I'm not PC enough, but I tend to dismiss being careful in certain situations.

Don't get me wrong, I often play it safe myself, but this is the TYT forum, not the fancy dinner where a verbal gaffe leads to the record skipping followed by crickets chirping.

When I say "careful," I just mean I have to be ready to get a ribbing for saying such a thing.

And the reason I mentioned it to you is that it can be very insulting to women when every complement concerning a woman is qualified with information on their looks; to wit:

she's pretty, for an older woman
she's nice, but a little overweight
she's beautiful, but has no tits

I only tell you to increase awareness, not to chastise you.  These comments really do affect girls' and women's self esteem in our society, even when in reference to other women.  It suggests that they will never succeed unless they also are young and have a perfect face and body.  I realize that men are more visually oriented and always looking to spread their seed, but at the same time, it is really tiring to hear.  Can't we compliment people without bringing up their appearance?  When I was in high school, some kid called me "ugly" and it affected my view of myself for years after.

But you are right, this is TYT and I expect sexist comments from myself and others ;)
Have at it Hoss!

God bless her Republican heart. If Bob Packwood gave her a kiss, she would have the good grace to say thank you, and mum’s the word.

I would say she is at least 1000 times more intelligent than Campbell Brown.

My mom has been a democrat forever, remember?  It was good old dad who was the Republican businessman of the family.  But Oregon is going Obama anyway, and so is Washington, so none of our votes really matter.  My mom raised her kids in the 1960s, so she ain't afraid of no black people or radicals.  But if any of us had dropped out of high school, or got pregnant as teens, we would have been in much hotter water than Palin's litter.

with that nice D&B rating, and six houses, was not married to a Democrat. Or was that your grand dad? Looks like two GPs. Maybe 3 GPs, depending on your brother. Maybe 4 GPs, depending on your brother's son.

none of the GPs ever had six houses.  Must be another family.  Or maybe it is a secret inheritance and dad forgot to tell us before he died.  too bad, we could use the money.

Ken's dad is a human-animal hybrid.

by OneHitKill on 10/15/2008 02:51:43 AM EST

[ Parent ]

When you say human-animal hybrid do you mean like

The Ani-men?
Not a high point for Marvel

Or maybe the Savage Land Mutates?

They live in Antarctica, no really!

Or possibly you meant the Knights of Wundagore?

sadly, the best of these three groups

Maybe the Marvel Apes?

It's like it was written for desertpear

Or a good old fashioned lycanthrope like Wereolf by Night?

His name is Jack Russell, like the terrier

Or even something as simple as Spider-Man?

Cue AC/DC

I like to think you were going more for this though:

Peter Porker

I have a pretty big collection, and the images caught my eye...i swear comic books are like a creativity class.  I'm so glad I read comic books as a kid, because they dealt with issues like bombing abortion clinics, religion, alternate universes, and these stories allowed my mind to experience things that books nor television could allow.  All media intrinsically has it's own advantages, and I think comic books allowed for expansion of vocabulary, visual appreciation, implied movement through still images, and a removal of the "box" that so many people put on their creativity.  I feel that comic books directly affected my resulting career in creative arts.  The only reason I say all this is because comic books get this bastardized representation of deteriorating the minds of the youth, when really I've experienced the exact opposite.

I am a little stunned you haven't seen the numerous and very long digressions into comic fandom on the boards.

I am probably as big a culprit as any.  But Spencer and the rather obvious Weapon X and Kang the Conqueror are big fans as well.  I am sure I am forgetting some fine folks here.

I am a Marvel guy and read a lot as a kid.   A few years back, a guy I worked with sucked me back in and I have been reading a lot since.  Marvel has really began producing material that is great for intelligent adults.  In fact, I have read a LOT of Marvel from all eras and I think the last six or seven years are the best period ever.

I also agree that Marvel went a long way so developing my mind.  I am with you 100% on all you said about that.

It also did a lot for my sense of right and wrong.

We must not have had a comic book thread diversion for a while, huh?  It's weird that there seems to be a correlation between forum posters on TYT and love of comic books.

Was it released as a Marvel Comic? Yes.

Beyond that the word "real" is on some shaky ground.

How about no fighting at all. (And please note that I intentionally whited out all personal information, even in the previous posts on the subject. Go back and take a look.)

Here is an ecology question, which is in your area of expertise:

Dow Chemical makes an awesome herbicide called Remedy that is used to control brush such as mesquite and cedar. I cut the trees down with a chain saw, and then spray the stump with a combination of diesel and Remedy. A small spray will kill the entire root system of the tree, and I have the world’s biggest mesquite trees. Some are 25 feet tall with 12” diameter trunks.

You now have to hold a pesticide applicators license to purchase the product. I understand the need to be careful, because this is powerful stuff, but why the applicators license? How much of the herbicide can get into the groundwater through the roots of a tree?

by KenTX on 10/15/2008 02:57:54 AM EST

[ Parent ]
I wouldn't use herbicides on my property unless there were some really driving need.  Maybe it's from seeing a person disabled by 2,4-D use in Vietnam.  What's wrong with brush, providing food and shelter for birds and critters?  Are you worried about water uptake and competition with grass?  That habitat is not my area of expertise, sorry.  Himalaya Blackberry and Scotch Broom are the weeds on my acre and a half of pasture.  I bought four cute Soay sheep wethers and they eat them down to the ground--no herbicides and if you wanted, you could eat lamb too.  I just have to feed them some grass hay in the winter, but for the other 9 months, they eat only grass and water.

But even better, some people are marketing mesquite pod powder as a superfood.  I even suckered into it and bought a bag and it's good!  Probably more profitable than beef at $15 for a little bag of powder.

The bean pods of the mesquite can be dried and ground into flour, adding a sweet, nutty taste to breads, or used to make jelly or wine.

When used in baking, the mesquite flour is used in combination with other flours - substitute ¼ cup-to-½ cup mesquite flour for each cup grain flour. Mesquite is used in breads, pancakes, muffins, cakes and even cookies. Mesquite can also flavour steaks, chicken, pork & fish. It can be added to vegetable stir-fries, scrambled eggs, soups, even ice cream.

My land is covered with mesquite. I'm just trying to keep it out of a pasture where I cut hay.

I can pick the pods, grind the powder, and sell the bags on ebay. There are thousands of mesquite trees on my property.

But those thorns are hellacious! I need to study this pod picking problem. I can put some nephews and neices to work after developing the process.

by KenTX on 10/15/2008 03:24:04 AM EST

Why fight nature when you can work with what you have and sell it to hippies?  $15 for a 1-pound bag, organic.  I'm not sure if all mesquite is the same in terms of flavor and nutritional value, but it's worth checking into.

These are my weed-eaters.

Next, even though repugnant to me, you could buy a few kudu and then charge old white men ridiculous fees to shoot them to hang their trophy heads in their offices.  I hear it's all the rage in Texas.

We might get some goats for weed control. People rent them out to state government for weed control.

I'm not into killing stuff. It's messy and gross, and almost always unneccesary. Pests are different.

Last night, I saw two giant nutria coming out of the lake. They were heading for trees to strip the bark (which kills the trees). I told my wife, and she came running out of the house with her .357, blasting away. She missed.

I told her to use a 20 gauge next time.

These nutria had to be 30 pounds. They were record sized water rats. I can't believe she missed!

Soay sheep.

Now I know we disagree on a lot here, but I have always enjoyed and respected your opinions... That being said - Campbell Brown is a total Obama HACK!!! Ever since she got her show on CNN it has been an Obama lovefest!!! Please don't say she in non-partisan when it is so obvious that she is! Just look at her facial expression when she says "Obama" - Its like a mini orgasm with every utterance! Thanks :)

She's saying something that even John McCain agrees with and you still think she's being biased?  Why?  What did she say that was biased in any way (other than your fantasy about her facial expression)?

Tolerance...  Yeah, it's soooo biased.  Who needs it?

Read this recent article on her from the NY Times:

"They're partisans," she said of Mr. O'Reilly and Mr. Olbermann in particular. "You're not going to see me ever be partisan. I'll never take a position on a candidate or an issue."

(Also among those she counts as partisan, she said, is her husband, Dan Senor, a Republican analyst. He is an occasional Fox News analyst and a former military spokesman for coalition forces in Iraq.)

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about her past reporting.  But I like what she's doing, and if she calls bullshit on both parties, power to her.  There is just so much bullshit right now in the McCain campaign that you can hardly blame her for focusing on them right now.  So, I'll wait and see.  By the way, I have also heard the opposite charge--that she's just pandering to what is popular right now and that she is really a Republican at heart.

On a day when William F. Buckley Jr. resigns from The National Review because of his disgust of what is going on with the Repubs, and all but the extremist right-wing are supporting McCain-Palin anymore, can you blame her?

Olbermann was PISSED at Obama...I realized the things that makes liberals argue is the fact that we question EVERYONE, even those we respect.  It's a GOOD thing when we argue amongst ourselves, because that means free thinking is going on somewhere...Obama gets called on his shit plenty, he just doesn't plan fuck over America nearly as often as McBush...I mean mccain voted against the expansion of the GI bill...

Huffingtonpost breaks this story:
William Timmons, the Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime.

The two lobbyists who Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on the lobbying campaign later either pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that they had acted as unregistered agents of Saddam Hussein's government.

If you're an electoral wonk, it's a lot of fun.

You can look at electoral maps of past elections, electoral histories by state, and run simulations of the 08 election. (Obama wins in every simulation so far - DOH ! Sorry, did I ruin it for you?)

How great is it that McCain gave the keynote speech at an ACORN rally in 2006?  They literally can't find a talking point to stand on.
