THE DEBATE: What to watch for?

Google Technorati del.icio.us digg reddit

What do you watch out for at a debate?

Any buzzwords you'll be looking out for?

Any telling body-language?

Any particular attack lines, new ideas or zingers you expect or would recommend using?

What strategies should the two candidates employ?

Any suggestions for the moderator?

Sound off! :)

after listening to Rush L. today, I wonder if there will be some attack by McSame about Obama's financial plan. There could be some great parties: DRINK when Obama sounds presidential, and some real drags: DRINK when McSame looks presidential. Will McCain cave to the right by going low and mentioning Ayers or Wright?? (I'm sure Barack has his answers at the ready!) I can't wait!

I personally don't think McCain will mention Ayers, Wright or Rezko.

Everyone save his right-wing base is tired of those manufactured scandals.

Though perhaps he might bring up the new kid on the block (of right-wing manufactured scandals): ACORN

But he should know that nothing's easier for Obama than debunking that one and make McCain look bad for raising it.

So I think none of these attack lines would help McCain persuade yet undecided voters (let alone poach any Obama supporters). We've seen all that backfire...

But then, McCain is erratic, unpredictable and desperate. And desperate people often enough do foolish things. You can't count on McCain's rationality, judging by his past behaviour.

I think he'll rather try to paint Obama as too liberal, a tax-raiser and such. The conventional GOP attack.

Not that that will work either.

If there were any better approach or any dirt the GOP had on Obama, we would have seen it by now. Clearly, they have nothing and are reaching.

Bottom line:

A) McCain has nothing to offer in terms of policy

B) McCain has no serious dirt on Obama

C) McCain is the inferior debater

RESULT: Chalk up another Obama victory. Not a knockout, as Obama won't go for that. He'll play it safe, be presidential, calm and cordial. That's what he did in the last debate and he scored bigtime with persuadable voters.

And that's what debates are about. The persuadables. It's not about zingers pleasing one's base (which includes as all.) Cenk's asking for too much in terms of attacks. Same goes of course for McCain's bigotted base, who want McCain to impersonate Hannity at the debate. Sheer insanity.

Very good point!

Both aren't popular. Attacking them also works in regards to raising the spectre of an all-Democratic government.

That's a card that has some resonance with independents, who seem to like a divided government. (Very bad idea if you want to get stuff done, but many don't see it that way)

Okay, REID and PELOSI will be added to my drinking game. :)

Attack and he looks like a mean old man spouting shit no undecided voter gives two shits about.

Play nice and he looks like a cowardly old pussy who is too scared to even look at Obama.  I don't know about y'all, but McCain's glee in attacking Obama when Obama isn't around and his unwillingness to do it to Obama's face has just makes him look like a coward.

I honestly see McCain as less of a man because of this.

Six months ago I disagreed with the guy's policies.  Today I can't find one thing to respect about the guy (counting only the last five years of his life).

is what Biden was referring to recently.

I think people are just really turned off to Grampa Death now.  I don't know if there was anything he could have done.  Too many people just don't like the guy.

the Hail Mary of all time:

I would concede that I have probably lost the election. The polls do not look good, and despite my best efforts to raise serious issues about Obama's past the American people are focussed on the economy. While these issues of Obama's ties to questionable people remain for many god-fearing Americans, it is time to turn to substance. Win or lose (I would say), I am going to put country first and use my remaining time as a platform to promote an agenda of fiscal-realism (don't use the word conservative) and strength and prudence in foreign policy. I would lay out my suggestions for a bipartisan future. I would explain why I think the Bush administration is unpopular, and what I would do to correct the perception of incompetence and malfeasance at the white house. I would start by talking about overhauling the justice dept and reviewing the Bush administration's policies and agencies top-to-bottom, followed by a review of the federal budget as I had proposed in the two prior debates. And I would cap it off by saying that Obama has been a worthy opponent, and should things go his way, I would hope that Obama has the courage and the patriotism to govern as I have described.

It might not work, but he has to acknowledge that he understands the dynamic of the current polling. People will never be open until they think he understands why they're angry. That's how you connect. Its not enough to demogogue about wall-street.

A true maverick would do so and go for your message, but hey, we all know that McCain's an opportunist and nothing like a maverick...

You just have to look at his latest effort to shore up his troops' morale: "WE HAVE HIM RIGHT WHERE WE WANT HIM!!!"

That rings so hollow. It's head-in-the-sand reality denial.

But he's chosen that message instead of adopting the stance you outline.

But sure, he'll acknowledge that he's the UNDERDOG and I expect him to say that this allows him to "SPEAK SOME STRAIGHT-TALK" (another drinking-game phrase to look out for).

But he won't simply strike the sails in the way you describe and thereby relate in an entirely different way to voters.

I agree that would be smart, but let's face it: He doesn't have it in him. He'll go for the false underdog bravado.

McCain really has to find a way for people to start again listening to him. I think many have simply tuned out to his message. And I think he can only do it by going down the route you describe. But it's not gonna happen.

I think McCain's pretty resistant to debate coaching. His coachers must have told him to cut out the rather awkward "my friends" stuff, but he still does it the whole time.

So, "my friends" would really get you way too drunk. Alcohol-induced coma...

MAVERICK? McCain and Palin have woefully overused that label. It's simply weird refering to yourself as such. Not sure McCain actually used it in the last debate. In any case, it's a bad idea to do so. I think this would keep you sober tonight.

POW REFERENCES? It's pretty much the only biographical reference that's a winner for McCain. One of the very few cards in his sleeve. He'll play it. Good drinking game criterion.

WHAT ABOUT OBAMA?

BUSH? Throughout the campaign it has been an important task to tie McCain to Bush. Obama won't let up in the last debate. Good for drinking game.

PRAISE FOR McCAIN? I think we'll once again see plenty of respect-for-McCain talk. Doesn't work with us, but it's not about us. It's about the persuadables.

But really, I can't think of any phrase or buzzword Obama woefully overuses. Okay, CHANGE, but that's not cringe-inducing.

Drink when you hear the following (words I think will appear and I intend to write on pieces of paper for my friends to pull out of a hat):

Reagan.

Maverick (I give it high points b/c mccain likes to talk about himself)

Bailout.

Main street.

Wall street.

American.

Energy.

Terrorist.

My friends.

My Prisoners (take a double shot if you hear this little gem again)

Iran.

Change.

Last debate I suggested that We drink every 3rd time Obama cleared his throat, again that is very dangerous. Now I have a new idea.

Obama loves statistics.

I think every time Obama words "percent" and "billion" we should drink.

My friends is not a good phrase to drink to.  I kept up with about 60% of them during the last debate to my detriment.  I wouldn't go there again.

You really can't afford such a reckless drinking game under a GOP president considering the long lines in emergency rooms.
