Do We Want Obama to be a Challenger or Success

Not sure I agree with Cenk on this Lieberman thing. What do we really want, punishment for Lieberman or a successful administration.

Barack Obama and Rahm Emanuel want and need 60 votes to get a lot of Obama's initiatives done.  As has been pointed out before, there are a lot of issues facing this nation and the world.  These need to be dealt with and we know Republican leadership won't address a single issue.

Barack Obama will need to hit the ground running, and so they will take every vote they can, whether it's Joe Lieberman's or some random Republican's. What we have learned from the last two years of campaigning is that Barack Obama is a pragmatist, and he does get things done.

Yes Cenk is right that Barack Obama has not been a fighter, or challenged President Bush near enough for my liking.  However he did get elected being a black man with the name of "Barack Hussein Obama" which was no small feat.

I may be wrong, but I get the feeling from Barack Obama that he is always looking at how to win the war, and not just a single battle.  This can be dangerous, because if you lose too many battles, you can't win the war, and Obama is also fighting the anchor of recent Democratic leadership which has been surely lacking.

If we think back the last few months, Cenk and a number of liberal bloggers and Democratic strategists were complaining about Barack Obama, that he was not fighting back, that he didn't stand up to the Republican smears, that he was not showing spine, and he was making the same mistake as John Kerry. But he was not making the same mistake. Yes he stayed cool under pressure and he won. He won by being way smarter than us and especially the Republicans.

I truly believe from what I have seen is that President-elect Barack Obama has more backbone and spine than the Democrats have demonstrated over the last two decades. I truly believe he has a plan and a strategy for dealing with Lieberman and those Republicans he can pull to his side.

We are no longer dealing with the same Republican Party that we were dealing with just two years ago. They are no longer as disciplined, or as cohesive. They no longer have one leader, and if Barak Obama plays it right he will take advantage of the fissures.

Yes Joe Lieberman is a lying, back-stabbing, opportunist. I want him to be stripped of his chair, not only because he is a liar, but because he was incompetent. I would not trust him an inch, but if he is handled correctly he becomes irrelevant. Kick him out of the caucus and he is a martyr and would actually have some power.

At some point we need to trust that Barack Obama knows what he is doing. He keeps proving to me that he knows what he is doing. Till it's proven otherwise, I have to trust.

Nobody is looking to punish Lieberman.

Lieberman has been the chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee.

In that role, he should have been investigating the Katrina response, illegal wiretapping, torture, and many other possibly illegal acts by the Bush administration.

Has he?  No, he has used his Chairmanship to protect the criminals in the Bush administration.

Regardless of the harmful and vindictive acts Lieberman has committed in the run-up to the 2008 election, he should be stripped of his Chairmanship so they can put someone into that job who will actually do the work he is supposed to do.

Besides, now that Obama will be President, what makes you think Lieberman won't start to use his Committee to investigate the "rumors" that Obama is a Marxist?  When he was asked about this while campaigning for McCain, he said that the question of whether Obama is a Hitler-like Fascist or a Marxist is a good one.

Is this the person we want as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee?

I don't think so.

Lieberman MUST be removed from the Chairmanship of that Committee.

Then, if he wants to stay in the Democratic Caucus, he had better start to behave as a Democrat.

After all, Lieberman is probably useless as the 60th vote for Cloture to prevent a fillibuster.  Let him become a Republican if he wants to, and we'll see what that does to his chances for re-election in four years.

The short answer is: He can be both.
He can and should call to task the treachery of Joe Lieberman, and remove his chair, all while keeping him part of the caucus. Why? Because it's the right thing to do, if he wants to show he's not only ready to lead this country but his party.
He should support fully ANY investigation into the alleged crimes of the Bush administration. Why? Because it's the right thing to do as the head of the executive branch of this republic to assure that justice applies to all both big and small and enforce that justice. This will assure his promise of change.
I understand the need to not alienate the party based on perceived partisan issues, but inaction on issues connected to restoring the trust and integrity of his Office will ultimately not be seen as the change he asserts his presidency is about.
To avoid these issues with hopes that it will assure cooperation on legislation from people across the isle is the wrong way to go as we all will be ,once again held hostage to politics decided by the GOP.
This goes beyond party.
If Obama holds up the rule of law and leads with strength not fear, he will be a success. Why? Because he will have brought honor back to the Office.

I'm certainly not.  I don't think that Lieberman should be punished.  I think that he should be removed as chair of the Homeland Security committee because he cannot be trusted with the responsibility of running such an important committee.  He is a neoconservative bent on the destruction of Islamic countries.  He is disloyal to the Democratic Party.  He has shown his disloyalty to Obama.  He has launched no investigations against the Bush administration or their corporate sponsors (such as Haliburton) despite clear signs of malfeasance and fraud.

No, I don't want to punish Lieberman.  I just want him out of office so that he can't do any more damage to our country.

some people are talking about punishing Lieberman, especially for his role in the campaign against Obama. Other than that, I agree with you 100%. His removal should have nothing to do with punishment and everything to do with the points you just raised.
