Weak Bitter Movie Critic

Weak Bitter Movie Review

Dave is not Bitter! This is awful

Dave reviewed Yes Man or whatever the other day, and the main message was "It was a typical lame, happy go lucky Jim Carrey movie that was just stupid faces, slapstick comedy, and like his earlier ones but worse.....so I liked it."

Excuse me, how is that bitter? Dave needs to listen to some Bill Hicks or something before he does the segment. Because this isn't bitter...this isn't misanthropy....this is Dave saying he likes banality, but doesn't love it

When I saw the previews for Yes Man, I had a similar reaction to Dave.  Initially, I was like damn Jim, why are you reverting back to your old slapstick comedy (i.e. Ace Ventura and Fire Marshall Bill) when you showed so much potential in more dramatic roles like Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  Then I got to thinking, Jim's a funny/talented comic so why can't he revel in his comedy every once in awhile to lighten things up especially in times like these.  Who doesn't love Jim in a 2008 version of Dumb and Dumber?  Yes we've scene all the faces, but I'm sure I'll get some laughs and entertainment out of Yes Man when I see it come out on DVD - so "let 'em go!"

I also like the idea of more Carey hybrids like the Truman Show where funny is mixed with a little drama to appeases multiple senses.

Bitter people like me are crusty and angry

I liked the Ace Ventura movies, but Jim Carrey has LOST IT MAN

It's the classic trend for comedian actors. They're afraid that people think they're one dimensional, so they try some other more serious roles. Carrey was good in Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber and the Cable Guy. Then he got all butthurt about being funny all the time, so he went into 'serious' roles until finally he bottomed out with that awful 23 movie. Then when these actors realize that they suck at everything non-Comedy, they try to go bacl to zany films...unfortunately they're older and have been warped by their crappy serious phase, and now also suck at comedy. This happened with Adam Sandler as well

Every actor is allowed a couple get out of jail free cards so don't judge Jim's dramatic career by 23.  Your actor curve may be applicable to some, though you're way off base with Carey.  Don't forget it's very common for even the best actors to cash in every once in awhile on sub-par films like Bruce Almighty and Yes Man just as long as it doesn't get out of hand (as is the case with someone like Robert De Niro).  The only good reason to be bitter about Jim Carey is that he has never received an Academy Award.

And now want to bring Sandler into this?  Let me just bring up his last two dramatic/comedy films I've seen that were both great - "Reign Over Me" and "You Don't Mess with the Zohan!"

Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are only about 1000X better than Yes Man.
I think what saved Yes Man was the feel good, self help message of "be affirmative in live, be active, do things."  But it was not that funny a movie, not even by the standards of dumb Jim Carrey movies.  (There is an article in slate.com today about how Jim Carrey is too old to make these movies. I haven't read it yet, but it did strike me that the character in Yes Man had been divorced for THREE YEARS before the incidents in the movie began.  That's how they could justify Jim Carrey doing it.  It's also about 40 being the new 30 or whatever.

Finally, I am not on a mission to be the Bitter Movie Critic. If it so happens that I found the movie enjoyable, then what can I say. I call 'em as I see 'em.

Call yourself the 'Feel good, happy critic who understands movies intention and is at peace with it'

And instead of lemons rate the movies with little suns with smiles on them

If you want some one dimensional movie critic, I think Dave's not your man.  Personally, I the best critics are honest with their emotions and if they happen to like or dislike a movie for whatever reason, they say so.  Personally, I find there's more to "The Bitter Movie Critic" than the name.

I really want to write about the concept of bitterness, but I have to get my work done for now.

I know I'm spelling Jim's last name incorrect, but I just have Mary Carey all over the mind today.

Speaking of bitter - my fax machine is driving me crazy!!!!

If Dave hated every movie he saw, he wouldn't qualify as a critic.  Only as bitter.  It doesn't take much skill to be critical of every damn thing.  Believe me, I've done my share.

Bill Hicks?  What does he have to do with anything?
