Do Political Views Effect Which Entertainers You Like?

As you know TYT has been attending Red Carpet movie premieres in L.A.

First Ana talked to the cast of Seven Pounds (featuring Will Smith and Rosario Dawson) and then she talked to the cast of Bedtime Stories (including Adam Sandler) regarding politics.

The Seven Pounds cast seemed to be squarely behind Obama (even Barry Pepper with his strange answer) which of course is typical Liberal Hollywood. ;)  But the cast of Bedtime Stories was more complicated.

Or maybe not (Guy Pearce excepted). It seemed like the cast was comprised of Republicans, or at the very least it was clearly not made up of Obama fans.

So the question is, does an entertainer's political views change how you view him/her? Would you stop watching Frasier because he's a Republican? If you liked Hank Williams Jr what did you think of his terrible McCain-Palin MNF song?

Ken/Bobo/Fill In The Blank Con/Repub/Obama hater, if you lusted after Scarlett Johansson before, did her support of Obama kill your desire?

PS---Do you think liberals and conservatives answer this question differently generally speaking? Obviously it depends on the individual, but can we read into what happened with the Dixie Chicks?

They became more popular than ever

in a word no..  I like Bruce Willis  turn your brain off and watch things explode movies but I know he is a rabid conservative.

What actors do in their private life doesn't interest me. I don't care what cereal they eat or who they vote for.

Although I *am* disappointed when I find out an actor I like is an idiot when it comes to politics.

Sort of like Tom Cruise with Scientology (and yes, I know that's not political).

The Dixie Chicks went through some brutal stuff before they became more popular than ever.

Even though I'm not a fan of their music I do recommend watching the document Shut Up And Sing.

The Dixie Chicks where treated like Dixie shit by the country music radio stations.

I will check out shut up and sing

While not being a country music fan, I saw the movie Shut Up and Sing and found it a very good movie. I too would recommend viewing the movie to anyone interested in how the country music world tried to put a real hurt on the Dixie Chicks, and how they stuck together and somewhat prevailed.

I'm not at all (at all) a country music fan but I still enjoyed the movie.

Bruce Springsteen that is. And he is a very committed liberal Democrat.

By contrast, I don't like Linda Ronstadt anymore, because she's not just a Democrat fan. She's an open Republican Hater.

It's totally cool to support Democrats. It's not cool to hate on Republicans.

that it doesn't affect them, because if it did, they would watch/listen to pretty much nothing.  Damn liberal Hollywood!

I would like to say that it doesn't bother me, but it's always kind of floating in the back of my head.  I won't purposefully avoid watching anything because it features conservatives though.

I think it's interesting that most shows that are specifically tailored to conservatives generally suck, while shows that are very liberal tend to be well received.  I'm not just talking about The Daily Show vs. Half Hour News Hour either.  It works with dramas and pretty much all kinds of media.

All of that said, the reason I didn't watch Frasier is because it wasn't funny.  Standard shitty sitcom jokes peppered with the occasional literary reference (or something similarly "intellectual").

by Spencer on 12/22/2008 04:47:49 PM EST

If cons said no to liberal entertainers they'd only be able to watch like 20% of movies and TV shows out there.

Then again they still get to listen to 90% of country music. But that absurd reaction to the Dixie Chicks was pretty crazy.

I have to wonder if, when a person changes their opinions or their opinion of a celebrity because of their politics if it is because the celebrity is an informed person who therefore should be influential, or if it is a problem of small-mindedness.

The only time I remember being influenced at all was when Gen Clark endorsed Hillary, it didn't make me a supporter but it made me more comfortable in the possibility that she would be the candidate.

But I wouldn't like or dislike an actor or musician based on their political opinions. That's petty and childish. If I would only like people who agreed with everything I did, I'd be darn lonely. Someone who won't watch Sunday night football because they don't like Olbermann's politics, even though he's talking sports, needs to grow up. It's the same for anyone who likes Frasier but refuses to watch because the star is a republican.

by diguardi on 12/22/2008 05:21:39 PM EST

Let's say that you're gay (and or a big supporter of equal rights or gay rights if you prefer) and a friend turned you on to old records from Pat Boone.

You fall in love with his music but then one day you find out that he's an enormous, outspoken homophobe.

I don't know how I'd react in this situation but I'd have to think it would taint the music to some extent. It's one thing to be generically Republican and quite another to be a hard-core bigot/racist/homphobe.  ; Or maybe you disagree.

I have to say I wont listen to some reggae music because of the homophobic lyrics.

I wouldn't say no to a celebrity's work because of his/her viewpoints, unless somehow the content of his/her work actually incorporates his/her viewpoints.

That said, I'm sitting here thinking of celebrities I know of that are on-the-record conservatives: Kelsey Grammer, Robert Duvall, John Voigt, Curt Schilling, Ted Nugent, Elizabeth Hasselback (Drill baby, drill!). Who else?

Other than the derrick-worthy Hasselback, does anyone notice a trend? Older rich white guys.

No doubt ya'll out there can add some names to the list. I'm genuinely giving this my liberal best and trying to think of a non-honky who belongs on that list.

by Badass4Peace on 12/22/2008 07:18:42 PM EST

I think Elisabeth Hasselbeck is physically overrated. I *used* to think she was cute way back when, but now she's TOO tan and TOO skinny.

And her hair is TOO blond (in the context of her over-tan and dark eyebrows).

Tom Seleck, not sure if he even acts any more.

John Wayne, but I like almost all of his movies.

Dennis Miller.
I thought he was entertaining when he was on SNL and even enjoyed his HBO show, but when he became a raving Right Wing Harpie, he lost me.

Not because he's a Wing Nut, it's because he just isn't funny.

I'm the most politically incorrect person on the planet when it comes to humor but I think he became way to preachy and just not funny.

I completely agree. Unlike Jon Stewart, Miller goes for politics first and humor later.

LIke the other day I was like "Awww, nah, Dennis Hopper....really? Really, you like that? Tell me you ain't like that"

It doesn't usually affect me any more than the "awww, nah" response, whilst shaking my head

by Perry on 12/23/2008 09:55:53 AM EST

I forgive him because of that

For some reason being reminded of Dennis Hopper reminded me that William Shatner is also a conservative. I view him as a little wacky too.

I think it depends on the honesty of their position. The minute anyone starts using term likes libs and far left, I pretty much loose all respect for them, celebrity or not.  If they tell me they are a conservative but support Bush, I know, that they know, that I know, that they really don’t know…anything.

I won’t go to home Depot, Dennis Miller is dead to me, and I have lost all respect for Kurt Schilling & Ed Snyder.  That, said I agree with Cenk 110% on Mrs. Hasselbeck.  Yes I can.

by sisco66 on 12/23/2008 06:33:48 PM EST

in the thread?

I not, read it to see the facts on why she's overrated.

the fact that she's been bamboozled and is, herself, a bamboozler makes me want to drill baby, drill even more. I fully understand what Cenk means when he talks about women you hate but want to get with. It's reptilian!

To tell you the truth, I have never went out of my way to check her out. If she was not getting shoved down our throat by the media all the time, I would never have known she even existed.

But what the media gives us of her just strikes at that last medieval nerve. Of cours if I had to listen to her talk too long, I would probably shoot myself.

Now that I think about it, I am going to have to denounce and reject myself just for wasting this much time on the subject.

If she looked like this all the time, then yes I'd agree.

Unfortunately she looks like this (way too damn skinny/toned). Mark my words, if she keeps this up she'll turn into an overly tan Madonna eventually.

Now THIS is more like it.
