I Want Obama to Save Human Civilization
Since the election, media outlets, commentators, pundits, bloggers and regular people have created a steady stream of "What Obama has to do" articles. I've been a bit annoyed by these for several reasons: 1) Bush still had nearly three months to go after Election Day - where were the articles about what Bush had to do? 2) Furthermore, where were the articles about what Bush had to do going way back before the election? Why does Bush get a free pass? 3) Where was the national consensus that Bush was screwing everything up all along? Sure there was some of this post-Katrina, but it was plainly obvious way back in the first term. But these themes have been beaten to death in the TYT community at least, so I'll let it go. Now I will add my thoughts on what Obama has to do.
Feeding into conservative stereotypes of liberals' expectations for Obama, I hope that Obama's top focus and #1 accomplishment be literally no less than saving the human race.
What I want Obama to do is teach this country (and the world) the value of being proactive, of taking action BEFORE the problems occur. Five thousand years of human history have proven that people and societies have trouble recognizing this simple advice. I want Obama to reorient the entire human mentality.
Let's regulate financial markets BEFORE the economic meltdown. Let's educate kids BEFORE they become unproductive adults. Let's fix bridges BEFORE they collapse. Let's give people health care BEFORE they become sick, and let's get a system to pay for it BEFORE it bankrupts people and companies. Let's reduce environmental stress BEFORE catastrophic environmental damage is caused. Let's help people in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America BEFORE they become terrorists.
It will be tough to actually do all of these. So I just hope that Obama is able to teach and convince people, institutions and government the value of this proactive approach, so that he leaves a positive legacy that continue long after he's gone.
