Friday Fun Post: Hats=Trying Too Hard?

On Wednesday's show Ana explained that she bought two hats but that she was too chicken to wear them for fear of looking like she was "trying too hard".

Jayar disagreed saying that he loves hats on women (maybe because he was looking at Jessica Alba in a hat).

Personally I'm with Ana. Unless it's a winter hat, a lot of times I DO think a stylish hat looks like it's trying too hard. This is especially true with sunglasses.

I'm a less is more person when it comes to fashion. I personally have little tolerance for fashion excesses, especially with jewlery.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against some make-up, a watch, a necklace (I only wear a watch BTW) and a ring/ear-rings (as long as they aren't HUGE), but I'll never understand the idea of looking like a Christmas tree.

It's like a lot of things in life, some is good but you can always take it too far. When you do that you might end up with this tan, these arms or this body. Or this gelled up hair.

Or maybe this hat.

I thought that was an interesting exchange because (1) I feel exactly like Ana--I love the look of some hats on me, but am too chicken to wear them and have people turn their attention to it, and (2) to find out that some men, like Jayar, actually love them on women.  Which could make a girl more confused than ever about hats, or less!

I say err on the side of caution with fashion, although I'm assuming you also share my less is more approach, hats notwithstanding.

BTW, I'm also never wear a hat unless it's a plain black knit cap, you know, like what bank robber and bums wear I guess. If I lived in CA I don't see why I'd EVER need to wear a hat, unless it was for sun protection.

Finally, is there a cut-off for men to stop wearing caps? I think you look ridiculous after a certain point, but maybe that's just me.

is there an age cut-off. For example, if you're over 40 (I just made that up randomly but I can already hear the TYT Old Timers putting down their canes to type an angry response to this sorta young whipper-snapper).

reminds of something that'd be in one of the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books.

Well, I hate trucker hats, but I don't count caps and wool hats for winter.  I have long hair and even if I braid it, strands end up getting loose and in my face, especially if working outdoors.  I'll wear my company hat or a bandana headband then. But nobody's looking at your hat in this context.

is different.

I'm referring to what is mostly non-functional (fashion) wear.

I pardon you.

and those are some damn scary pics you linked in.  I can't believe I'm talking hats when I should be reading tiggerporn's new blog (maybe later), but how can you deny a little frivolous fun to gain a little sanity during the work day.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. At some point we need an entire thread devoted to guidos and their gaudy appearance.

I like hats - wear a fedora myself, most of the time, my skull was NOT meant to host a baseball cap - but I don't like ridiculous hats, anymore than I like ANY fashion statement which is laughable (I'm talking to YOU spandex wearing rock stars, Goths, and women who want to look like my old football coach)

I am an absolute sucker for flapper fashion, love them old movies, so it depends on which kind of "flapper hat" Ana's talking about. If it's one of the skullcap kinds, cool, but she has too long of hair to pull it off, and I'd rather see her hatlesss than that close to bald.

The wrong fedora can make a person look silly as hell, but the right fedora makes a person look...complete...

Just keep her away from the Carmen Miranda aisle.

This pic is not safe for work, but there's two points here:

1)-That hat looks stupid and makes her less attractive IMO (although that's not the focus of the picture).

2)-Really, a cross? I don't know how many times in life I encounter a hyper violent, angry or sexualized person with a cross. It's entertaining actually, but I don't think they get the joke.

I snagged my grandpa's hat--he was a pharmacist in Portland back in the early 1900s. A fedora type with narrow rim.  I love the photos of men when they all wore hats--men were so styling then.

That is trying too hard.

People wearing hats is like people wearing any other piece of clothing. If they are confident in themselves and what they are wearing then it works. If not then it doesn't.

by z1p101 on 12/05/2008 09:01:32 PM EST

There are PLENTY of overly-confident people out there that think they look great when in fact they look ridiculous.

Confidence can go a long way but even that can only go so far.

fine but distinguishable line between self confidence and narcissism.

Trust me, I grew up smack dab in the middle of guidoville. They have their own sub cultue that only they understand.

that Guidoville is somewhere in NJ. Is that right? I know, there are pockets everywhere but still.

The largest known herds of the North American Guido can be seen roaming free in Hudson, Essex, Passaic and Bergen counties. Northern NJ is their native habitat (upper right hand corner on the map).

During the summer months they migrate to the Jersey Shore area (mid to lower left area on the map) every weekend to spawn.

P.S. If some of my old HS buds read this you know I'm kidding. It's not somthing I have never said to your face before.

I love hats on women. I have a book of hats worn by black women in church. Mostly pre 1960s. Thats when they got the most outrageous.

Of course there is the Kentucky Derby. Hats Hats Hats!

My advice to Ana  is ,if you are wearing the hat and the hat isnt wearing you. You dont look like you are trying to hard.

You gotta own it sista

Sounds like you have a crazy hat fetish to me.

By all the voodoo magic of Bobby Jindal, exorcise me Lord of all my wanton desires.  I remember criticizing my dad for his asian fetish after his midlife crisis, and now I'm faced with an indian one of the sorts.  I want to be whole my lord, so bequeath me from these demon spirits!

and it's not just the 1960s. I used to love watching the ladies going to church in Oakland on Sundays when I lived in the Bay Area.

You are so right CD...did I actually say that out loud???

If you are going to wear a hat for fashion reasons, then you need to feel comfortable in it and own the look!

I also agree with Ihavenophobias... a hat is an accessory, there's no need to add sunglasses, huge jewellery, big purse and gaudy boots along with it. Keep it minimal!

Fun post!
