Not quite the dirt filled scandal you make it out to be. The problem is his actions in regard to some telcoms that appear to be favors...its way to early to proclaim his political death quite yet.

it all depends on how the media (and the McCain camp) handles the issue.

We know all too well that non-issues can quickly sink even the strongest candidates if the media spin is the right and the candidate doesn't do a good job of deflecting criticism and speculation.

I'm not crazy about McCain losing primarily because of a non-issue issue (I only care if it's true and it exposes hypocrisy WRT conservative "values") assuming it goes that way...then again the stakes are so high at this point that I'm willing to overlook it. And hey, this could easily die off in a matter of days, weeks or months.  November Rain is a ways off.

in saying that you'd overlook the non-issue.  But you're not quite living up to your screen name of "ihavenobias".&nb sp; Sheesh.  ;)

In all honesty, this doesn't seem like that big of a deal (at least not yet).  But the Keating stuff that is laid out pretty well in the article is much more damning as far as I'm concerned

by Spencer on 02/20/2008 08:34:30 PM EST

[ Parent ]

Did McCain get laid in return for his influence?  Was Vicki Iseman a high-priced prostitute?

I almost wish that my conscience would allow me to claim that these are legitimate accusations.  But they're pure bullshit, of course, and I am not an immoral, anti-American Republican scumbag.

The most that the (please don't read anything into this word) affair could show is that McCain likes pretty young women and can be persuaded by them.

He's not exactly unique in that regard.  (I refuse to reveal any personal anecdotes.)

And I know McCain is lying, hypocritical piece of shit on virtually all fronts.... Don't forget he left his former wife who took of his children when he was POW only to get a nice new piece of ass (Cindy)... Classy!

Now on to the article:

"Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity."

You're telling me he was screwing her?

"Not quite the dirt filled scandal you make it out to be."

I read the article Mr Fred, and this is what I learned.

Eight years ago, Paxson Communications was a campaign contributor to John McCain.

John McCain wrote two letters to the FCC on behalf of Paxson Communications.

Not that any of this was illegal, but I never realized this kind of quid pro quo existed in our nation's capital. I am shocked! I am appalled!

Adultry? Both parties deny it, but at his age, I would be impressed if he could somehow make it happen.

I don't remember this story even slowing the stride of Bill Clinton, and Gennifer certainly never denied it.

by KenTX on 02/20/2008 10:49:38 PM EST

[ Parent ]

Bill Clinton...or..based on the primary results, Hillary either.

Nice spin but its not a simple matter of "writing letters" as you make it out to be, particularly for a man who has made lobbists and campaign reform a signature issue nor does it speak well of his " experience " and judgment.

I must say I am disappointed and not in a political sense as you might expect.

by MRFred on 02/20/2008 11:02:09 PM EST

[ Parent ]
Fred, your opinion on this issue matters to me. (I'm not kidding.) You're a moderate centrist who remains impartial in the 2008 election. The rest of us are a bunch of partisan hacks, and our point of view is anything but objective.

John McCain took campaign contributions from a corporation, and he helped them in return. There was definitely quid pro quo. None of those actions were illegal. These things happen every day. Republicans and Democrats. Corporations contribute to politicians, and they expect access and consideration and favors in return.

This was John McCain of McCain-Feingold fame. Nothing illegal happened. Nothing immoral happened. (as far as anyone will ever know)

Was this a case of hypocrisy? You are the best guy in the forum to make the call.

by KenTX on 02/20/2008 11:27:26 PM EST

[ Parent ]

If you've ever had the misfortune of sitting thru an ethics course you would hear the distinction made over and over.

McCain claimed to be a reformer, he claimed to be an independent thinker and he claims to be free of influence. He said he learned a lesson based on the Keating affair and that he learned the error of his ways.

Now this. The NYT, call them what you will, has been working this story for several months, McCain hired a criminal lawyer to try and stop the story and by several reports personally attempted to suppress the story in the NYT. These are confirmed by numerous sources what the campaign says not withstanding.

Even if nothing illegal took place, it calls into question his judgment and the voracity of his positions.

No matter what you may think appearances are important, a 63 year old man ( at the time) spending a great deal of time with an extremely attractive young woman would and did raise eyebrows and give the appearance of impropriety.

It is human nature to think that, particularly in view of the fact that he divorced his first wife and married a woman 11 years his junior. Examples in the lives of normal people abound. I know it, you know it, and a possible future President of the United States should know it.

Add the fact that she was a lobbyist for a large corporation under the oversight of his committee working on legislation that would ultimately be favorable to them ( the company) reinforces that view. His staff recognized this and intervened. They said they often have to do this to" protect McCain" from himself.

Do we need a president that needs this kind of "supervision?" Who will protect us from his impluses?

So in conclusion, perception is reality, Republicans have been using that concept for years in their campaigning..its called swift boating. Please spare me more Clinton stories...this is exactly the same view I had of Clinton.

EEEEWWWW Thats an image I wont soon forget. John McCain doin the nasty on a plane (with a 40 year old, No less!!!)

by bobo1 on 02/20/2008 09:19:34 PM EST

Well, a long time ago I read an article in Hustler magazine (so you know it's true) about Project Monarch.  Basically it's a CIA sex slave operation for powerful people, and it's fucking insane.  But according to the lady in the article Cheney is pretty hung, so make sure you factor that in to your calculation.

But seriously, the picture they had at the top of the article initially (they've since changed it) made McCain look like a total geek.  I was wondering the same thing.  The craziest part is that both of the women he's been with recently (I haven't seen his first wife) have actually been somewhat kind of sort of dare I say attractive (if that's enough qualifiers for you). Power sure does do some amazing things.

hey, as I sit here and think about it more, doesnt this whole McCain thing smell very Clintonesque? Carvillesque? Whoever is running her campaignesque?

If the media shifts focus from Obama to McCain following some wild goose Clintonesque adultery story, doesnt that take the fuel away from the cult status (and more importantly free media) that is being devoted to Obama?

If I were Obamas people, i would be very careful here...Any derailment of their "message" or popularity could swing the pendulum away from him and onto hillary...

Doesn't it seem a bit too convienent the whole timing of this? And its the NYT, big Hillary supporters...

What are your thoughts, people?

by bobo1 on 02/20/2008 09:46:38 PM EST

We all know the media's history of sticking with any Republican scandals.  This will, like all the others before it, go by the wayside soon.  If the Clintons planned it (which I don't believe), then they must have internal poll numbers that are even worse than the media's numbers to pull a crazy ass stunt like this.  Put a fork in McCain and put a few prongs in Hillary as well.  Both of them are quite done.

by Spencer on 02/20/2008 09:57:11 PM EST

[ Parent ]
The more I watch and read about it, something smells funny. even if the story itself is total BS, the point of fact remains....

Clinton IS on her last legs. Texas and Ohio are slipping away, Florida and Michigan are unresolved, and the momentum for Obama is HUGE!!! I couldn't think of anyone better than the Clintons and their buddies at the NYT to pull and push some shit like this to deflect attention away from Obama. Look at the attention it has received tonight...Olbermann's having an orgasm under that desk, and I can just imagine what Dirty Old Drugbag Rush will say tomorrow to the zombies that are the dittoheads...

I dont agree that they are both "done", and they are gonna have to come up with some new strategies against the rising "Messiah" that is Barack Obama. There is still a fight here, and its going to be uglier than ole Janet Reno in her bikini...

Put nothing past a Clinton (or a Republican)

Was it fun, KenTX/bobo1?  Does deceiving lots of people make you feel good?  Are you happy about what you've done?  Has it increased your self-esteem?

Yes, it certainly is something of which you can be proud.  You have a lot more victims to which you can add to your list of trophies.

So, tell me, what's it like to treat people as objects who exist solely for your amusement?  That's all we are to you, isn't it?  Is it easy living without a conscience and with absolutely no regard for others?
