Chris Matthews Feels Obama Running Up His Leg Then Gets A Sore Ass

No doubt Scarborough will gas all morning on Wednesday about the Matthews confrontation of Obama surrogate TX State Sen. Watson. And of course they will fail to include Olbermann's immediate question to Matthews about just what the whole US senate has accomplished lately. Matthews was unable to answer that question just as Watson was unable to answer Matthews. The Obama campaign blew it by not preparing Watson better, but this is minor compared to what is in store for the Obama campaign in the general election.
 
But consider this. Matthews has been getting a lot of ridicule lately (not the least of which by TYT) about his giddy man-crush on Obama. I truly think Matthews saw an opportunity to appear tough on Obama and redeem his bruised ego by attacking one of Obama's surrogates. Matthews didn't pose the same question to the Clinton surrogate, yet he was rabid in his attack on Watson. Matthews is ALWAYS ABOUT MATTHEWS in the end. I try to not call people names, but it needs to be said...Matthews is a sorry putz and a lame excuse for a journalist. Time for MSNBC to end his perpetual psychodramas.

My dad said the exact same thing about Matthews over compensating for his Obama crush, and I agree completely.  I wonder if he has any opinions of his own, or if it's all just bending to each perceived "scandal".  The only thing I don't agree with you on... it's MSNBC and not CNN.

It's not Obama's fault that .. (none / 0)
this fool did not do his homework before going on TV. Just a cursory look on the Senate web site will easily point out legislation that Obama either supported or co-supported. Among these are:

The Global Poverty Act
The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act
The Combat Meth Act
Re-authorization of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS)
Cosponsored Dru's Law which creates a nationwide sex offender database and requires greater monitoring of sex offenders upon their release from prison.
The Adam Walsh Child Protection Act
Cosponsored the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act
Cosponsor of the KIDS Act, which requires convicted sex offenders to provide their Internet identifiers, such as e-mail addresses and instant message addresses, for inclusion into the national sex offender registry.

That's just some of the stuff that I easily found.

Also, I noticed that Matthews did not ask the Clinton supporter the same question about Hillary Clinton sponsored legislation. You could see the sigh of relief on her face as she gleefully piled on with Chris Matthews and he 'hated on the Obama supporter.

I'm an Obama Precinct Captain, but I'll admit to being blissfully unaware of his legislative record, other than what he's said in speeches. In the end I don't really care--his record is a wash with Clinton, but McCain's is obviously slightly better at getting his own legislation passed. I think this is going to be a talking point in the General election.  I think it's a little unfair to complain too loudly about a rookie senator not getting everything done he'd like to while he was the minority party and opposition to the President.  

Obama is a little green, and this is going to be the narrative going forward.  The people who are voting for him don't care.  We believe he's going to listen to the will of the people and use good judgment... Hillary isn't really interested in listening to the people, and McCain's judgment is a little suspect given all his flip-flopping.

Schmoab, I recently did some canvassing for Obama in SC and was impressed by the organization of this campaign. But most of the door-to-door volunteers were not well versed on issues. It was stressed by the captain that all issues questions from voters be directed to to him, if answers were not available on printed handouts. They didn't want anyone to accidentally give false information to voters. I thought that was a great idea considering the inexperience of most of the canvassers, which is to be expected in a volunteer organization.

That being said, I believe it is critical that precinct captains (at the least) should be familiar with their candidate's positions and accomplishments and be able to back their devotion with some rational substance.  If not, then you will leave him vulnerable to just such attacks as you saw with Matthews last night. I have the Obama religion, too, but you and I and other devotees are not going to convince the rest of the electorate just with dewy-eyed devotion. The where's-the-beef-attacks are only going to get worse during the general campaign. The Republicans have already declared they are going to push on this. Time to get ready for the assault - be able to explain and support your point of view and don't let the Republicans outflank Obama.

I agree Mijoh, it's obviously not Obama's fault personally. But I believe the Obama campaign staff should have made sure that Sen. Watson was  better prepared to speak on national TV during an election show, especially since Matthews has a history of lunging and attacking when he senses uncertainty in any degree.

Thanks for your good list of Obama legislative accomplishments and links. I think it's time for the Obama campaign to start publicly answering its critics and get this information out there or else the "fluff" characterization is going to stick.

This site gives a detailed analysis of both Clinton and Obama's legislative record. Turns out that Obama's record is actually quite impressive. Particularly his work on the Lugar/Obama non proliferation bill which became law in the 109th congress. His work on ethics reform and some truly excelent work in the Ilinois state legislature where all sides praise his skill and persistance in pushing through legislation on video taping interrogations and confessions. There are lots more but the link above will take you through the details. Worth memorizing a couple of main points to dumbfound any repuplican snear merchants you bump into.
